A mate of mine hasn't renewed his car insurance policy for over 4 years (4 years last July). Am I right in thinking he has now lost all his ncb (5 years) as it's been over 3 years since his policy came to an end? I've always been under the assumption that insurance company's work to a 3 year rule.

Thanks
Alex

yep the majority of Insurers work to the 3 year rule, he may stand a chance of returning to his last Insurer, he might get the bonus reinstated or alternativly a large intro,

Yes I'd say he's lost it.
BTW - I hope that he hasn't been driving without insurance?
Cos as a law abiding insurance paying motorist, I'm REALLY fed up with paying extra on my insurance for the free loading t***s. I'm also fed up with the pathetic (average £100) fines handed out to the free loaders.
Me I'd string 'em up.

No mate. His last car was a Metro 1L (a complete rust bucket) which he scrapped 3 years ago when the insurance run out. Because we live in Manchester City center and he works in Manchester City center (unlike me who works in Chester) he didn't need a car.

I can't stand people who drive without insurance. It costs me a fortune to insure my car in Manc but I still pay it year in year out. I have been quoted £1100 to insure an LCR where I live (this doesn't sound too bad until you take into account that I'm 25 with 5 years ncb). I see so many young drivers driving around in done up BMs and I can only conclude that this is because they drive around without insurance. What I don't understand is why the police don't do more

Okely Dokely m8.

I expect the boys in blue are more interested in catching retired bank managers driving at 31.5 mph in a 30 zone. Much more profitable.....

The sort of people who just pay up without making any fuss.

Ho hum...

I'd reckon on the NCB being lost as well. I ran a company car for 4 years and lost the 8 years NCB that I had built up when I had my own car before that. I was told that the insurers only recognise the renewal letter with proof of NCB for 2 years. I did get a 50%+ introductory discount when I insured my LC though so could be a case of ringing round a few places.
