Hi all,

i have asked the GF to buy me some component speakers for Christmas to go into my 99 Ibiza GTI to replace the factory ones as i have worn them out (due to loud playing of subs!!)

what should i get or tell her to get me and something which are not too expensive, i want to replace the ones on the dashboard and the ones either side of the parcel shelf?

I recommend Infinity Refrence Series speakers. I got em in the Mini and they are damn good and not too expensive.

But I aint no ICE expert!

Hey up Tony,

Your in dash speakers are only tweeters there is a midrange speaker in the door, I've used a set of kenwood dualmags PSR70P for my front components which I think are very good for the money (about £110), these are run by a kenwood amp as well.
The rear speakers are small 6x4's I've got some jbl gto's in there although only for a bit of rear fill. With hindsight I'd junk the rear speakers (if you have a sub in the boot) and spend a bit more cash up front as that's where you sit, and get a decent 2 channel amp to power them!

Pay a visit to your local ICE dealer or halfords and have a listen to what's available then take a look at some of the mail order web sites to get an idea on price!

The Infinity Reference are pretty good speakers for the money + they work well with the amount of power put out by a car stereo. It really depends on how much $$ U want to spend.

well as the gf is buying them, then i dont want her to spend too much, so about £130 maximum, so what could i get for this money (ideally Kenwood) and can i run the new componenets of the existing head unit and not have to bother with Amps etc? are they easy to replace the ones on the front dashboard?

Tony

The links below show the component kits available in the size to suit your car.

They are easy to fit, but being component systems, they are separate tweeters and mids usually with a crossover.

The tweeter as standard sits in a basket under the grille in your dash, kev used little plastic dishes out of his kitchen to mount his new tweeters in there, was a perfect fit.

have fun

Yep no probs with running them from your hu.

The tweeters in dash are built into a mounting cup but it's not to difficult to fabricate something for aftermarket ones. If you remind me at Alconbury on Fri then I'll show you, probably going to leave in all the install as it's a pain in the arse to remove it!

I know of 3 or 4 people that have run the kenny dualmags and been happy with them.

Genesis is right, but I always tought that the focal speakers worked best when amplified? From some of the numbers I've seen they are not very efficient. Then again I don't remember which model they where.

access range is a little more efficient than some of the other ranges
and can easily be driven by a decent head unit

right, just to double check so that the GF gets the right ones

Kenwood KFC-PSR71P about £135-140

Is this the right part number for the tweaters that fit in the top of the dashboard and the bigger speakers that replace the ones down the bottom in the doors?
