View Full Version : Clutch Noise
Anyone good with clutch mechanics ?
My Toldeo has started to make a noise :
Engine on tickover with clutch depressed = no noise
Engine on tickover with clutch out = noise
Guessing it's coming from some sort of bearing which is in play
when the clutch is spinning ??
Need to check if any of the clutch is under the used warranty considering it has had a new clutch 10K ago.
Cheers.
Suspect it's your release bearing. It's common on most cars for the release bearing to go before the actual clutch. If you replace the bearing you might as well replace the clutch plate & housing at the same time.
P.S. sorry missed the last part of your post. The release bearing probably wasn't changed when you had the clutch done - check with your dealer! you may have a good case to claim otherwise.
Definately sounds like your release bearing. Its a VW trait. I've had this on every VW I've owned at some point, although it doesn't do it on the Toledo I have now. If its not covered under warranty I wouldn't worry about it. I did about 15k on a Golf I had and didn't have any problems, then I sold it!
Thanks for the advice guys.
Have booked the V5 in for a service and to have the clutch noise looked at also. The release bearing is covered by the used warranty. The friction material is also surprisingly covered, but only for 3 months.
So the dealers said it was probably just gearbox chatter, and I would have to book it in for them to have a look. (Monday week).
Now I am sat at work waiting for SEAT rescue to turn up as I can't engage any gears whilst the car is running !!
Great..........
Hang on - release bearing comes into play when clutch is depressed, not released.
Sounds like something in your box - I'm afraid it sounds more serious than release bearing :(
I learnt my lesson with gearbox noises years ago - after "putting off" repair to main shaft bearing, which eventually wore to such an extent that swarf jammed on the bush for 1st gear - equivalent to selecting 1st. Which would have been fine if I wasn't in 5th doing about 80 at the time  Lucky to still be here to tell the tale.......
I reckon you could be right Mik, no gear selection, plus lots of grating and metallic knocking - sounds like big box trouble !
Will have to wait and see what the dealer finds :(
Lovely trip to Heathrow last night to collect a stunning Rover 25 hire car  What a dog of a motor !
I will never have a bad word to say against the 1.0 Arosa loan cars again :p
Well - 600 quids worth of clutch assembly (plus labour) and so far so good. Glad I wasn't footing the bill !
Gearbox is all in order I am informed.
The gear changes feels much tighter / stiffer with the new clutch.

I've got a brand new V5 and mine has started to make a grating noise when depressing the clutch whilst in motion
It doesn't happen all the time just every now and then, just coming up to its 10K service, it'll be after christmas now when it goes in
Sounds like the gears aren't disengaging fully for a split second
Any ideas chaps
