View Full Version : Ibiza TDi Sport modifications
Ok, I thought I'd start a new thread where we can post info on tuning/modification products specifically for the Beezer 130 TDi.
I'm now waiting for info from RPM and APR, I'll post it when I get it.
Fen
Sorry it isn't a very interesting thread, but hopefully will be soon.

That's the one I want, but last time I looked it had tba under the price column. I also want to see if I can have cruise fitted and then be able to switch back to the standard map for those pesky visits to the dealer / times the wife borrows it.
Fen
I know i've seen a plot of it somewhere. might be best to give Rich a call? If you go down the APR route, any chance I can pop up for a test passenger ride? Only down the road from em.

I called this morning but got an aswerphone message, so I left my number for a call back.
It shouldn't be a problem to take you out for a spin in it. Where are they anyway?
Fen
Daventry is APR, but Stealth Racing is their nearest RR which is near Banbury just off the M40

Of course; Oxfordshire, home of tuning. I spent a not incosiderable sum on my 944T with Bob Watson near Banbury, almost bought the Prodrive PP for my Scooby from Banbury, so where else to go for Beezer perfomance?
Not too much of a prob to get there then; hopefully I'll get to speak to someone later today.
Fen
RPM are resellers for AmD chips (Oxford way again)
Superpoops probably do one for your car (or one really similar [sic])
Allard Turbosports like their TDi's and resell for hoppa, inline type chips.
APR's is by far the best performing one I have seen though.
I figured APR say they get the biggest numbers, and I haven't heard anything bad about them (no experioence prior to the Beezer though) so maybe they are real figures too.
RPM only claim 160 bhp for their chip.
Rich just phoned back; I'll be getting chipped as soon as I can find a time to get to Daventry (no RR time required apparently; 30 mins in & out). I'll keep you all updated...
Fen
I've booked my chip for Tuesday morning, 1st thing. Other than the Coventry dealer's demonstrator mine will be the only one in existence, so maybe some of you will want to know how it goes?
Thus far I know it is £449 for a single programme (multiples coming next year hopefully), takes 1/2 hour to 'fit' and makes a huge difference! Figures were posted elsewhere, but 182bhp is the only one I remember, other than torque was within 20lb/ft of my modded 944 Turbo.
Nothing back from RPM yet unfortunately on suspension. I'll chase them on Monday if I still don't hear.
Nice one!
drop me a mail with your mobile number, can't do tuesday morning, but up for lunch?
mark@seatcupra.net
Mark
Torque was a smidge over 300lb/ft.
I'm very keen to hear more about the whole thing Fen - fitting, testing etc and, most importantly, performance afterwards :D
No problem Chris, I'll be itching to tell you all about it (I hope).
Any joy with Tins?
I didn't try Tins, but something else has come up. Should find out more on Monday morning :)

Still a Beezer though I take it?
Oh yes, that's not changing.
I hope you get sorted out with one soon then.
So, some of you want to know what the APR chip is like then?
Basically it's fantastic. The car is now what it always should have been; a hot hatch.
More details later, when the grin wears off!
Stop teasing us!!!
Any dyno figures? :D
RichardBW

Didn,t dyno RB5'S Ibiza but the original test car was 182bhp and between 301 and 307 lb ft (several runs around these figures but we will quote 180bhp and 300lbft.)
I have been trying to scan the graphs from this RR since reading this thread but it looks like the scanner is going in the bin. Sorry.
RB5.....Good to meet you. Hope the trip up the M6 was more pleasant with the new power.
Richard APR
I'm plucking this out on a PDA on-screen keyboard, so still short.
No RR run, but Rich said it felt slightly stronger than the Lister's one (more miles so looser?)
1st impression was disappointment, but then I got a clear bit of road and floored it. TCS light on in 2nd & 3rd! (it was p1ssing down). Like my 944T it's soooo smooth that it doesn't feel as quick as it is until you get a frame of reference, in my case a 156 that thought it was overtaking me; see ya Alfa-man.
In absolute terms it's now closer to the Scooby than its previous performance; it is that good.
I'll play some more and can add more when I have a keyboard.

Fook me! :o :D :D
What's the warranty situation?

Cheers, Richard, likewise. The M6 was strangeley more bearable than usual...
I've snagged a server to surf on (don't tell the customer(!)).
APR was easy to find (well, I got to the right road and caught sight of the sign:) ). Richard was very friendly and relaxed; decent premises and a nice cup of coffee and a chat then I got to relax with the latest copy of CCC while he took the car away to be chipped. I was in and out in just over an hour, which included the chatting and paying etc.
As I said earlier first impressions were not great (exactly the same after I picked up my 944), but then I started to realise that while there is no sudden 'bang' as the boost comes in, it's bloody quick and smooth. It now feels like a reasonably powerful petrol turbo; same elastic throttle cable feeling because of the lag and then a nice shove in the back. Every gear is now like the one below used to be, so you guys who liked 3rd, you can now have that much go in 4th!
I'm now very familiar with the TCS light (even in 2nd on a dry roundabout), and I have the confidence to squirt into those small gaps in the outside lane that I was missing with the Beezer until now.
Fuel economy seems to be slightly better (maybe 3-5%) at a fast cruise, but the instant reading drops to 5 very quickly if you boot it:eek: I still got 53.8 for my trip up the M6 despite accelerating harder than strictly necessary every time I got the chance!
You have just gotta have this chip guys; the car is so much more fun.
If the opportunity presents itself I'd be keen to get it on the RR for some figures, so we'll see.

I'm not telling if you're not!
I need to find a 'chip friendly' dealer I guess.
Bear in mind my Scooby was standard by the finish, and the Ibiza isn't as quick, but it has more than halved the gap with this chip.
Excellent stuff - thanks for the right up Fen.
In other news, Premeir reckon six weeks to get my car now :)

Cheers Chris. Nice Christmas pressie for you then perhaps.
I love my 3rd gear - I want your 4th! So, a few questions...
How much?
Whats the situation with the dealers once it is chipped (can they tell its there, and do they care?)
How much does it affect insurance cost?
Hmmm, all money questions really! (the only downside as normal)
It cost £449+VAT.
AFAIK (can you confirm Richard?) it's the original chip with new software blown onto it, so it's not visibly different, however any dealer who knows these cars and who drives it any distance will spot that it's more than just a 'good one'. I don't suppose it would do me any favours if I had an engine or transmission warranty claim, but I understand that some dealers are 'chip friendly', and I have a couple of ideas who I may try.
My policy was originally for a lightly modified Impreza, so I don't know how the chip would affect anyone else.
I'm working in Manc until Thursday and staying in Fallowfield. Is that anywhere near you (you may be able to persuade me to show it off to you)?
It was dry this afternoon and I can still get the TCS light on in a straight line in 2nd. 1st just lights up the fronts as soon as the boost comes in if you give it half throttle.
Well, it might have to wait a while at £528 :(
Funnily enough I work 5 minutes down the road in Didsbury ;). I'll pm you.

Sorry but I cannot go too much in to how we actually modify the program but I can tell you it is a full remapped program(fuel, boost, load, injection, etc)
At the moment this is single program only but we are looking at Jan 2003 for the switchable version and any existing customers will be upgraded to this.
Price for Ibiza 130PD single prog chip £449+vat

That my understanding that it looks the same as original to the naked eye is all I wanted to confirm.
Does the switchable version just give the option to revert back to the factory programme?
Yes.
I understand that it is controlled by the cruise control switch somehow. APR are trying to get the info they need to enable them to fit cruise to the new Ibiza, which I imagine is the problem with providing switchable programmes now.
RichardBW

Switchable option will allow standard settings for the dealer visits and will be even more undetectable than present systems.
Sorry to be a bit vague on this one but I have to protect our own interests until we officially launch new products.
Richard APR
What do you all think of this?
Edited to say: The kit, not the graphics!
This sounds sounds like a must have. I'm 100% interested and will be contacting APR next year when I've got more miles on the clock and it's run in nicely.
The switchable option is an absolute brilliant idea. Question; presumably cruise has to be fitted to allow switching between programs but does it actually give you the cruise function as this would be like Christmas twice over as mine does not have it fitted?!!
Keep the review going Fen, we are all dying to read how it's going.
:D :D :D
AFAIK the cruise is fully functional (but costs extra). I hope I impressed upon Richard enough that I want the first cruise stalk he can get his hands on (test it on my car if you want), 'cos like DaveP I find the seat horrifically uncomfortable and I'd like to be able to wriggle around more.
I spoke to RPM who were pretty impressed by the idea of 180bhp (their AmD chip does 160 and is more expensive). They have turned up nothing in terms of a suspension package yet :( but have a subtle body-kit to suit in stock :) that I'll have a look at ASAP. They know which springs I could use with the stock dampers just to lower the CoG in the interim (and improve the looks), so I may have a set of them, especially if I can just add shocks when they become available. They did suggest that their 160bhp demo car (Ovni, sold in Plymouth, anyone on here?) was a bit bouncy under hard braking, but I haven't braked hard in the dry yet to comapre mine.
I also had a useful chat about chip friendliness.
Now I just need to get some Super L's
TBH I am not that bothered about the exterior, but have you thought about some nice Audi S3 recaro seats, complete with heaters? Probably not that straight forward, but very nice.
I feel a little bit too ordinary in it just now, but I've decided just to order some wheels and lower it onto them and see how it looks before I go buying a body kit.
It's also having its mirrors and handles painted at the first service.
I fancy the front seats from an Impreza Sport Special (they're v. comfortable and the Sport Special had yellow ones). Interesting idea sticking with VAG though; presumably the side airbags would work then. I'm not at all fussed about electric blankets in them though.
What do you think of the steering wheel? I find the rim is an odd shape, just looked on the seat accessories pages and they have the replacement wheel that is their brochures for £96.XX.
Also a strut brace for £50.47, go well with your other 'options'?
I hadn't noticed the wheel being too bad. I'm not fond of any of the huge SEAT logos, wheel centre included.
I think the worst design on the whole car is the boot catch; looks nice enough but gets you dirty and creates clean fingerprints every time you actually use it. Now I can't say that you can tell a woman's car because it has paw marks all over the boot any more. My wife's Mk2 has a traditional button to open it, and between that and the handle inside to close it with (like ours) there is no need to touch the outside of the boot.
I thought that the accessories steering wheel was just our's in either red or yellow. I didn't see the strut brace (yet ;) ), but I have a set of air vent surrounds ready to be painted yellow and I have ordered the yellow gear knob. OK I'm becoming a tart!). I'm also having the mirror backs and door handles painted (and probably that black bit below the back bumper).
Do you have a special accessories brochure 'cos I'm missing something. If so, does it have lowering springs in it?
Well chaps (and any chapesses lurking out there) just for you, you understand, I tried a v-max run with the APR chip.
On the way home last night I found I was quite close to a test track I know in Somerset - you may have heard of it, it was named after a high performance BMW saloon. The result of burying the throttle and keeping it there until the car wouldn't go any faster was an indicated 141mph, verified by my GPS navigation kit as 137.7. I don't know what the wind was like so it may get to a genuine 140 if the conditions were right, or it may only do 135 next time, but a not to be repeated experiment with a not too bad result for a little diesel shopping car with some electronic tweakery.
Oh, and I extracted my head from my backside and looked at SEAT's (crappy) website to find the accessories - doh. Shame they can't be bothered to photograph cosmetic bits, how do they think they'll sell any if nobody knows what they look like?
The paper brochure at the dealers has the steering wheel, air vents thingies.
Oh and I found out last night that the Ibiza doesn't have a beep (like the leon) to warn of low washer levels.
Never had a car that does that.
Mind, I filled up the twin washer tanks on the BM the other weekend (one tank for windscreen, one tank for headlights). I had to stick over 20 pints in! Daft!
And there is no visible way of seeing how full the washer tank is as you can only see the filler cap!
Would really like to see some pictures of bodykits for the new beezer. Something tasteful, modest yet mean looking if anybody finds anything please let me know.

An attempt to have a tank large enough that doesn't need refilling between services?

www.ms-design.com and koenig do them.
I do like the replacement grills. Very nice.
Would be a better advert for them if they had used an SE or a sport model with the quad lamps in it, but they still look good.
I'm trying to source the grilles now.
Totally agree about the base car. The weird full-size picture looks a bit pants too.

The bodykit shown here may not be as subtle as I was looking for, but it really looks good . I love the front skirt. It may not be speed hump friendly but what the hell.
If you can get hold of the grills please let me know where from and how much.
Thanks.
when ya gonna fill the boot with giggle gas then ????
MUHAHAHAHAHAH
N2o - ;) suck it and see ;)
Coming from a standard 1.4 ibiza, I get enough giggles as it is is without nitrous as well.
besides I have no boot space left the 2 amps, 12 disc changer and sub take up all the space.
I'm thinking about a chip from APR. My heart says yes my head says do it. My credit card overrules them both and says it can't flex that much.
Soon though
MWaaaaahhhhhahahahahahahaha

APR have some graphs for the 130 & 150 PD Engines at http://www.apreurope.com/products/images/pd_130_150.jpg
I think they're from a Golf, but as they're the same engine it should be enough to convince your sceptical friend !

The Golf and Ibiza come out with around the same bhp but torque is different due to the Ibiza gearing.
I have dyno graphs for each specific car but can only lay my hands on the Golf one at the minute.
I will keep trying to locate the Ibiza graph and get it posted.

Next time you are passing the test track / runway could you try to get a time for 30-100mph so I will know what I am missing.

It took me 9 days; well, I had to undercut your guess at 10!
Any particular gears you want for the 30-100?
surely 4th and 5th should cover that range nicely.

LOL :D
I'm just looking for the quickest time, so through the gears, one of the guys on the tdi club forums did a run for me when his car was standard, which I'll have to dig out, so it will be interesting to see how it compares.
BTW, a std scoob is 13sec, so I'd imagine you will be about 16 for the same increment

Well, I did it twice, because I felt it ran out of puff a bit in the upper reaches of 4th, but 3rd / 4th was the quickest, although it really slows from 80 - 100 (5th is faster, but the change takes longer than the saving. I did it twice in 3rd / 4th and once with 5th and I got 13, 13, 16 for the tests, so not too bad then, eh?
Times were taken on my analogue wristwatch, in the dark, and using the speedo, so not the best for accuracy, but it was the same both times.
Robertio
20-11-2002, 18:44
That is very impressive :) I had thought you'd be close to a std fugly, but it seems to be very similar to an old model turbo
I checked out the old time, and for a standard car the guy recorded 18.7sec for the same test.
It does seem about right thinking on it as a mates chipped FRST (so 165(ish)bhp) was almost exactly the same as well, and the somewhat over weight Ibiza is a couple of hundred kgs heavier than it.
Just a shame it is not looking like I will be getting one :(
When you get around to changing your wheels it would be interesting if you could put one on some scales to find out if they are partially responsible for all those kgs.

Why, what's happened?
I'm not the lightest driver and I had 2/3 tank, clothes for 3 days away, a briefcase and a laptop in the boot, so easily 200kg more than a lightweight driver on their own.

If you look in imports you will get the details, but in outline form : Seat are showing no sign of making my car (you could say I'm not their biggest fan at this moment).
Nightmare. I'd like to say it'll be worth the hassle but, while I'm still happy with mine, at the end of the day it's just a little shopping trolley, and you'll easily pick up something just as good from someone else who realises that they either supply you a Dutch import or don't get you money at all.
Good luck.
Ok, slightly gutted, but it seems APR are doing the chip for 25% off if you get it done by Chrimbo Eve. I'd say go for it any of you who are thinking of it (even if it isn't run in yet, just go careful!)
Less than £400 quid inc. vat WOW!!!!

Only Daventry do the TDi programs (but that's always the case AFAIK).
There's a thread about it here:

its booked in for monday morning. yea.
Tuning - APR on monday 9th dec
I bet you can't wait!
Shush! Please! Stop annoying me ;) :D
Chris,
I know they say that it has to be done in December, but surely that's an end of year financial thing and they'd let you pay for it now and not actually get the program until you get your car?
Assuming you really really want it.;)
Oh, I want it :D
Planning to get a few thousand miles on the car before doing anything though.
So was I. but it looks like 3000 will have to do.
Booked 2 weeks on monday !!!!!!!!!!!!!

It looks really good.
who did you get to do the painting on your extra yellow bits I have been toying wirth the idea of getting my bits colour coded as well.
An outfit called Exon in Exeter did the paint; used by the main dealer (but invoiced separately - £170).
I bet you're counting the minutes to Daventry now?
Looks gorgeous
The extra yella bits really set the car off but is it me or does this car always look as if the wheels are too small even with 17's on ! It will be interesting to see what it's like when you get it lowered.
By the way I'm also counting down but days rather than minutes (had to book in for 2 weeks due to work).
I'm hoping that lowering will help, because it could do with 18's just now as you say. The tyres are bloody low profile alrady though, so much that I checked the speedo with GPS to see if it is still correct. GPS said 97.6 at an indicated 100, so they must be the right size. 18's would need rubber bands.
I did see that you were going for the chip; nice Christmas pressie!
I'm keen to know what you guys think of it.
13 hours left on the clock. I cant wait.
Do you know of any ms-design importers cos I was looking over old threads and I still really want those mesh grills. Alternatively has anyone here had dealings with them. Will they ship to the UK.
I spoke to Evolution about Konig seats (see the 'Replacement seats' thread in 'Modifications'). They are MS Design agents and I've told them I want the mesh grills. I'm waiting to hear back on Konig subframes, mesh and suspension kits. I'll try to find time to chase them on tomorrow. I'll say that there are 2 keen people if you like, to see if that speeds things on.
RPM have the splitter, rear valance, side skirts, eyebrows and spoiler in stock (cancelled order) but I've given up on them getting back to me about the grills, although they must be able to get the stuff. I don't think I want the rest of the kit, although I'd still like something to toughen the look up a bit I think.
Can you ask Richard about the progress on cruise control tomorrow for me?
I was planning to ask about cruise control anyway as it would be useful to me. Would apprieciate it if you could put in a word about the grills. I have to agree it needs something to toughen it up a bit.
I up and raring to go. In just 3 hours it will be going on.
Woooooooohoooooooo.
Rage, have you found out how much is affects your insurance? Tesco want another 38% (which just so happens to be the power increase!?) off me if I go for it :-(
I have been told by a SEAT parts guy that the SEAT mesh grilles are now on the parts catalogue, but no prices are available yet...I will be getting one as soon as they are out!
I'm back and its really gooooood. Fuel consumption was 49.7 on the way there and 62.4 on the way back and I was going faster on the way back. I love the overtaking ability I now have. This is a seriously fun car.
APR were friendly and despite some early cable trouble the software went in ok and it was all over in minutes.
RB5
Richard said as soon as he can get the part number for the cruise control stalk and wiring loom then he'd post them and it would be possible to do the upgrade yourself.
So it ws worth it then?
Cheers for the cruise info, and also to ToXXin on the grills; I'll try the dealer, unless Flapper knows anything about them?
Just went out around my favourite roads for a bit of a blast and its the best £400 I've spent in a while. Well worth it. The in gear acceleration in 4th 5th and 6th is so much better. It feels less sluggish not that it was bad before but now its great.
Superb.
Faster but better mpg, astonishing
If this is what I have to look forward to it may seem an even longer wait than when I got the car (come to think of it, it is!!). Roll on 23rd.
By the way any idea of how much the cruise is likely to cost ?
I have no idea. Richard didn't say. Sorry.
Well, I couldnt resist so I have just booked my APR job for the 23rd :D
Grrrrr!
Stop it please!
<Goes to ring dealer to find out where my car is>
Nice one Dave
What time have you booked ?. I will be there at 11 maybe we will get to meet and put name to face.
Well I booked in for 1pm because I will be travelling from manchester and dont want to get up very early ;) I could have got down next week, but I am already off work on the 23rd so the extra days pay can be added to the funds!
Jason has just given mine some pasty (I believe he's legally qualified, as well as being a really nice bloke), so he may give an impartial review, just in case anyone is still in a quandry...
Nice one Dave BTW, you won't regret it!
Any news on a date Chris? Maaybe you could have it delivered to Daventry.
I may hang around a bit or have some lunch nearby so we can have a chat if your OK with that Dave. It's going to be an interesting day for both of us it seems.
yeah, why not - I will probably be there before 1 anyway if the traffic aint bad (I hope it isnt snowing - or the tcs will be on overtime!).
I was going to get my front bumper resprayed after xmas because it has a bit of a scrape on the corner - thats gonna have to go on the back burner for a bit now :)

If I got my arse in gear and rang, I might get a date...
I reckon running in will be essential to make sure the car's healthy and not a Friday afternoon dog before getting it done.

I was thinking you could just take it easy, but I guess yoiu want it to be standard for a while in case it has to go back.
I forgot to say earlier, Jason got 27.9 mpg out of mine over 19 miles:eek:
Sub 30?! Impressive :D
Yeah, in case of any niggling issues (hopefully there won't be any) but best to keep it standard for a few miles I reckon.

He says he wasn't really trying, what with it not being his car etc., and it certainly felt like he was well within his limits; bloody good drive for somebody who had just jumped into a strange car (and in the dark) IMHO.
Have you all seen Martyn's work on my car with PS in the Ibiza forum?
I'll see you there then Dave, I look forward to meeting you.
Fen that looks great mate. It gives you a good idea what it looks like when its dropped. Makes the wheels fill the arches better as well.
Rage,
What's this about a glove box light?
Took it in to the local dealer and asked about the availability of a glove box light from an 'SE'. The owner of the dealership overheard and said that they would supply and fit it for free as I am a regular customer. It took nearly an hour as its not the straight forward plug and play item that you might expect. So I now have a light in my glove box.
Just got back from my works christmas 'do' and once I was back onto the M4 I had my first real play in the car.
Oh My GOD
It is just great fun acceleration from 40 - 130 is really good. I bottled out at going any faster but had fun circling an Audi A3 at 100+ before accelerating past.
All ahead

I thought that you weren't excited enough by the chip, now I see why; you hadn't tried it properly. It's bloody awesome though, isn't it? Imagine having to wait another 2 weeks to get it... that would be awful...
It was bad enough having to wait those 4 or 5 days. Two weeks would be a killer. especially with people constantly talking about how good it is.
Ahh, come on guys stop teasing us. I could have booked earlier but seeing as I already had that week off I went for the 23rd so I didn't sacrifice another days hol. The wait will be worth it though I'm sure.
the day has arrived. happy chipping day.
we wish you a happy chipping
and a really quick ride home.
took mine for a trip out with 4 blokes and luggage managed 141 before having to slow for traffic
I have just spoken to the guy at VW fleet services about my service, maintenance and tyres contract. It would appear that changing the wheels isn't a problem. They will still fork out for most of the tyres but I have to pay the difference between tyres for the 16" and tyres for 17" which is not much. So for those of you out there on SMT contracts I thought I would post and let you know you can change the wheels without inccuring too much extra expense.
Nice one Rage - thanks for letting us know.
NP. heres the phone number for them incase you have any questions.
Note: don't believe them if they say they'll call you back.

This maintenance contract thing I've read about on a few threads now, what is it, how much does it cost and can I get it know that I'm 2 months into ownership ?. JCT didn't mention or offer it to me when I bought the car ! so I wil be a little dissapointed if I've lost out.
Cheers,
I went for full service, maintenance and tyres it costs £43 a month but covers me for ANYTHING that needs doing to the car. ie brakes exhast tyres services the list is huge. I got it purely cos I need 2 services and a set of tyres each year so it pays for itself. Plus if anything goes wrong thats not covered under warranty then it still gets fixed and I'm not lumped with a bill when I least need it.
funny, I wasnt offered it either. Although 43 a month is quite a lot - I would hope my service costs and stuff didnt come to that much with only 10000 miles a year!
I wouldn't consider it if i didn't do 20k+
I took it based on doing around 20k miles per year.
If that's just front tyres and two services, then I should be a winner with it.
Probably not worth it then seeing as I'd be lucky to go over 12k in a year.
Thanks all the same guys.
Ok I ordered my alloys this morning and they
will be here on saturday morning. Couldn't get hold of the Fox ones I wanted due to back order time of 6 weeks. So I went with these.

I thought i'd risk the economy thing as well and have gone with 215/40/17 tyres.
edit: grammar
Nice. 7's or 7.5's?
Oh, and what are they?
Very nice.
Much difference on insurance if you don't mind me asking?
they are league (katana) LG129 17" x 7j
edit: have just checked with insurance company and they want NO extra money. I told them I was replacing the standard alloys with nonstandard and she said ok no problems.
I love direct line.
Rage, you're going to the RR day? Will the wheels be on then?
yep will be there. I have been assured that the wheels will be here saturday morning. This being the case I will probably have them on the car within an hour of their arrival. So all things being equal.. Yes.
In a serious credit card flexing session I have been talking to RPM and ricci concept about suspension but I don't think that will happen until next week. I'm also trying to find others more local to me that will do suspension for it.
