Hey guys, any suggestions on tyres? I am currently on the standard Pirelli P6000 and I hate them! They squeal so much that they break my concentration when driving fast and grip isn't ecellent either. I would prefer to keep the standard size (I've got 205-55-16s on a 4wd Leon T which we DO get back in Greece, hehe...). I've read in the Scooby forums that the Toyo Proxes and the Eagle F1s are ok, any ideas or reviews?

Hi mate,

Why dont you try Bridgestone S02 ??? or Michelin Exalto ??? Another tip is to get V rated tires instead of W (officially).

As far as I know, there are no S02s around anymore, and a friend of mine with a Scooby just tried the S03 and is not that happy. As for the Exaltos, I've had bad experiences with SX-GTs on my Saxo VTS (too soft, wore out in 2 months!). What are you using Yagos?

Well I'm facing the same problem...S02 are rare here in Salonika...SX-GT's I had also in my Punto GT. Same verdict...Either Bridgestone RE-720, or Toyo Proxies...So far 16K Km's I have the factory fitted P6000's. I really dislike 'em because the curse of Pirelli is following me (my Punto have had P700...awfull)

P.S. my e-mail is ygag@forthnet.gr

Yup, I generally hate Pirellis, my 106Gti came with P700Zs and they sucked. They're ok for family driving, but do not work well under hard cornering. I'm a Bridgestone fan myself, the GTi is on its 2nd set of 720s and I'm very happy with them. The S02s are hard to find because they've gone out of production, you can't get them in Athens either, except if u find any old ones left over somewhere. I think I'll take the plunge and try the Proxies on the Leon. Any other suggestions welcome!

Bridgestone have indeed made the S02 obsolete.

A number of folks on Scoobynet have tried S03s and were none too impressed.....

Apparently the S03 is not the replacement for the S02 ~ the replacement "performance oriented" tyre will be the (yet to be released) S04.

Toyo Proxes get excellent reviews, but no personal experience.

I've tried the new Michelin Exaltos on my last car and was impressed.

I'm quite sure that the Exaltos are excellent, the SX-gts I had were really nice and sticky from cold too! Their problem was that on nice, twisty Greek mountain roads where they got quite hot, they just started "melting" away, I could never get more than 6-7k decent km out of them, maybe 8-9k if I rotated them exactly halfway through, so I'm a bit wary of Michelin compounds. The 720s I have on the 106 are not as grippy in city driving, but they come into their own when you get some heat into them, both on track and on the road due to a harder compound. I hadn't heard about the S04s, thanx 4 the info!

As you say, the SX-GT's were great, I had them fitted on my previous mota but the fronts were due up for replacing just when I traded it in. I'd only done 8000 miles. If you are rich then they were fine.

I've got them fitted on the 20vt too from new so I was expecting them to have gone by now. I've done 6000 miles and they are just over half worn so maybe it depends on the car?

Cheers

Thanx 4 the info guys, I think I'll go for the Proxies just to try them out, my mate with the Scooby is also interested in an opinion about them, so I guess I'll sacrifice myself for the greater good! :)

By the way, nice signature Andy!

Yagos, have u modded your Leon? Any suggestions for good, responsible mods in Greece? Something in the region of 215-230hp would b nice (my m8 has an Impreza, remember? ;) )

Wouldn't it be relatively simple to bring it up to 225, as the engine is practically the same as the TT's? (I think the only physical difference is an extra intercooler)

I am running the potenza s-03's on my leon 20vt at the moment, and they do give more grip than the pirelli's, but i wouldnt reccomend them, i am going to try proxies next too, so let us know what you think!,

The 225TT also has a different turbo and turbo ducting as well as the additional intercooler,
The Leon uses a Borg Warner KKK03, the 225TT uses a KKK04,

You would probably have to add an additional oil cooler as well to get a reliable 225HP

Hmmmm, I guess I'll have to look into the tuning part a bit more extensively... As for the tyres, I will let you know what I think, but it's going to take some time. I am currently in England studying and will go back home in early December, so I'll let you know then! I just wanted to get my brother (who occasionally drives the car when I'm away) to have my tyres changed now as he managed to puncture one of them and there was no point in buying a brand new crap P6000!

From memory I think the TT225 has different pistons to cope with the extra boost. Pistons are your main problem with modding turbo cars cause a large % of the added BHP comes from upping boost.

Well, I'm still searching the local market for reliable mods. So far I found NOTHELLE and MTM tuning specialists. A friend of mine is working in NOTHELLE North Greece, so I will go there and see. My first mod will be a larger intercooler in front of the radiator. Then a better exhaust ... I'let you know...Tell me about your new Proxies...

Well, got the Proxies after all!... Still haven't driven the car (I'm going back 2 Greece on the 6th of December, dammit.....) but had my father (don't laugh, he's still up 4 a good blast, especially since I got the Leon and has masses of driving experience!) to try them out and give me some feedback over the phone! Apparently they are really good, have improved steering feel and work great in the wet too! The steering improvement was to be expected, as the P6000 have very curved, fat sidewalls which I found dampened feedback a lot, while the T1s look much more square. I found exactly the same driving my bro's 106gti on P700z's after my own gti on RE720s. Further info when I actually get to drive my car!

George

P.S. Yagos, I might be driving up north when I come back to go snowboarding, maybe Kaimaktsalan, might come by Thessaloniki, we could maybe meet up!

George,

I'm happy about your new Proxies. They did finally work ok...So TOYO is the only solution ??? Any alternatives ???
Well the funny thing with those Pirelli's is when the car is loaded (me and 3 people) during tight corners (speeding around 80km/s) you can hear them squeal like cats....!!!

I'll be glad to welcome you to Salonika....

Yagos :)
