View Full Version : Tubular Manifolds
Do they work?
My exhaust manifold has some severe cracks in it - so needs replacing.
I'm just curious of these ones you see cropping up all the time - and if they just end up cracking (at least they're repairable)
i had my TSR 4 branch fitted for about a month before it cracked
admittedly it was at the join to the cat and possibly because my engine mounts were on the way out
they repaired it and added a strengthening plate but i never refitted it as i changed the engine, apart from that i couldn't fault the manifold although a friend commented on some of the welds looking a bit dodgy
Its a known fact that the ones TSR (tallblock application) isn't a direct fit without modification to the bulkhead and the cat - or have one custom made at some vast cost.
Uprated engine mounts may also be req'd to stop the thing bashing into the bulkhead and increasing the life of the said manifold.
Unless your willing to spend £££ I guess another std one will go on:)
i forgot to mention the fitment side, that also involves a big hammer and lever bar
may have a standard 16v one up for grabs in the near future, it's about a year old and covered about 10k
hmmm - std cast one only leaked a bit... if you find it & want to sell it - let me know (assuming its not cracked & the studs are ok!)
dodgy welds? they're smal but cant fualt em (on the one I have) but the crank near the cat where its not a smooth bend is a shit idea - I'll stick a gusset on it prior to install
it was a brand new Seat one i fitted last year so should be okay, depends wether we sell the engine complete or break it but i will keep you posted
Stu
i was told there were a few pinholes when i had it looked at after it had cracked, guess it could have been a one off but was all repair by TSR anyway
got one fitted to my valver and its been fine so far - tsr-type one like what would be on a Mk2 golf gti - but then I have a short block and a full set of vibratechnics mounts
made the outlet from the collector 2.5" though to mate up with rest of system and no cat fitted, also welded in a lambda boss into the collector
and its ceramic coated now inside and out
if ya after a std cast one i got one as well if you need it
has 2 hairlines you can just make out - never made any noise but i got offered a good as new mk3 golf one (still grey) so i stuck it on
ooooh i still have that old head too but only good for practice as the cam journals are all missing and their match line bored iirc ?
Does anyone have any thoughts on Heatwrap?
I guess it'll move heat down the line to the cat/centre section (which are at least in the air flow)
personally I think its crap - dont last 5 mins and rots stainless steel
