Anyone heard of Turbo XS Boost Controllers? They are on the www.impossible-performance.cwc.net web site for £45. They are supposed to be able to crank your boost up to 30 PSI (more expensive model) in 1PSI incremements or on preset levels. Does anyone know if these actually work or are they just a gimmick? Will it endanger your turbo or electronics on an unchipped car? Has anyone tried one or know someone thats tried one?

Seems like a fairly cheap worthwhile mod if it works without damaging anything else...

it's basically a bleed valve. you replace your N75 with it. you'll get boost sooner and more if you want. I think the basic difference between these and a bleed is that they hold the boost in a similer way to a dawes valve (which is half the price)

So is it worth it or not? Will it damage the turbo or the ECU?

damage can occur from underfueling. I know of an audi that has a dawes valve but his is chipped as well. would be good if you were going for a jabba chip. I run a Bleed valve in my GT inplace of FIAT's N75 type valve

A manual bleed valve arrangement will allow mroe boost yes, by fooling the ECU/Wastegate by introducing a leak.

Max boost is 1.2Bar before limp mode cuts in.. Safe mode from ECU.

You should not just wind up the boost without adding more fuel and checking ignition is'nt too much. This is all ECU controlled so my advise is to stay away, and get a chip done properly form Jabbasport/APR etc... who are reputable and reliable.

You don't want to destroy your engine by getting it wrong do you.

The 20VT VAG engines and controllers are complex things and they don't like mods like crude bleed valves. Be careful.. It could get expensive if you get it wrong.

Cheers Bill. Had a feeling it was too good to be true! Will steer clear then.

The standard fuel mapping (in the stock ECU software) is safe up till 1 bar (to accommondate spikes and overshots over the stock boost). If the boost controller is capable of delivering a spike free boost level, you can go up till 0.8-0.9 bar with the stock software. Usually it means around 180-185BHP and you'll recognize it very quickly that you want more power which requires a complete ECU remapping, so sooner or later but you gotta do it.

Sim,
So if I get one of these are you saying that I could safely get 170/180BHP out of it without damaging the ECU or turbo?

Are you going to guarantee no damage could occur by doing this?
Stock boost is 6-8 psi, and you say it can take 14.7psi within its fueling/ignition window? The cars stock at the moment.

I would be amazed if it could.

yes, stock boost on the 150 (156)hp 1.8T is around max 8psi although it may spike at higher values too. The 1 bar safety limit is got from vwvortex, where they use MBCs extensively to raise boost up to 0.8-0.9 bar as a cheap tuning. I see no hazard in raising the boost up to 10-12 psi on the stock chip. However it would be nice if somebody could do a vagcom datalogging to verify this.
