Does anyone have any idea how to change the sidelight/indicator bulbs as there appears to be no way of accessing the cover from the rear. If there is no easy way, as my local dealership suggests, is this a problem with just the TDI. (i.e. size of engine makes life hard ) or is this a problem with the entire range?.

I was under the impression that in some european countries you had to, not only make sure that all your lights worked, but that you carried replacement bulbs for them so you could do on the spot changes.

This appears to be a serious job just to change a bulb.

My local dealer said

for the drivers side

"looks like you may need to remove the fuel filter to get at the cover".

passenger side

"just take the battery out and you'll have loads of room. "

Neither of these sound like roadside repairs to me.

I really hope my indicator bulbs never blow.

Stupidly I hadn't thought to check the manual. But it confirms my suspisions that it is a crap design.

It would appear that none of the lights are that easy to change in this car. All the rear lights need at least 3 screws removing.

It's possible to change the sidelight bulbs, dip and main without moving anything, just BLOODY fiddly, oh and be careful with the retaining clips as they have a nasty tendancy to fall off down into the under engine tray. Changed my side lights to phillips blue and vision plus for dip and main, miles better than standard.:)

lost a clip to the engine bay myself when changing the dipped headlights. Since then I try to tie something around it before popping it off, just in case.

I will have another look at the sidelights and see what I can do. Thanks.

Thanks for the type list Rage.

I put Philips VP in my Scooby and thought they were very good. Changing the bulbs in that needed rubber fingers as well

I have just got the bulbs through from powerbulbs and after a 1 hour fight with the car I have concluded that although its not a roadside job it is entirely possible.

cuts a scratches aside it went quite well.

handy hints:

remove bulb covers from the main beam units as well to allow extra room. remove the battery cover and open the fuse cover thing under the top battery cover this should allow more access from the side. other than that its not so bad.

Thankfully it should only be a one time job.
