Hi All

Well a years trackdays have started to take their toll on the old girl (16VGTI Ibiza built in 96) so I thought it was time for some TLC.

1. Stripdown front suspension following strange noises - all wishbone bushes well and truely shagged - rear wishbone bush was a joke ! floppy as a very floppy thing - all new wishbone bushes going in from Powerflex (95 SH grade special order 2 weeks, regular purple ones are 80SH)- these are Mk3 golf (thanks Dan at Awesome) - Mk2 Golf will not fit correctly ! Was going to go with spherical bearings but are informed from 3 different sources that they wear out at a frightening rate - ok for race cars which actually dont do many track miles generally (a single trackday will I think put a seasons worth of race miles).

2. Front upright was off so check of front wheel bearings - both shagged. New hub and bearing required on passenger side (£32 for both at German and Swedish). Hubs and bearings are Mk2 golf 4 stud. Lots of swearing and help from Kev to get the old ones out (cheers kev), new ones easy to fit with help from Mr grease, nylon hammer, and bearing fitting tool made from old wheel bearing and lots of sparks. New hubs now without ABS rings and sensors - more weight loss again ! Watch front wheel bearings and check if you do lots of trackdays - vibration had started to loosen the hub nut on passenger side ! - wouldn't like to loose this on full chat !

3. Both front outer CV joints shagged - passenger side worse. These have only lasted 1 year. £80 pair German and Swedish.

3. 9 trackdays on front brakepads (Superlight 2A calipers) and still perhaps 1/3 material remaining - Polymatrix D compound from Wilwood. Happy with these pads, new set £56 (for all 4 pads) Rally Design. Polish crap of caliper pistons before refitting.

4. Engine oil and filter - genuine filter from VW and Halfords 5W40 fully synthetic - 9A engine took 4.5L.

5. Gearbox oil (020 box) - 2 bottles Redline MTL (Tweeks) - approx 1.75L.

6. New sump gaskets - shit job, hard to get bolts back in transmission end and a cross thread incident waiting to happen.

Thats it for now. Few more things to do yet though......

Cheers

Rob

ps variable length intake manifold fitted and under test soon when wheels are back on.

yes we did, managed to drink a lot of stella on friday night and playing tiger woods on the ps2 (so addictive it hurts)

felt weird on saturday not getting up and crawling around kevs garage at 10am, instead went to watch the Rugby and consumed for stella.

more beer on saturday night followed by more on sunday watching the football.

NW Meet soon?????

Been a busy boy then Rob?
[i]...vibration had started to loosen the hub nut on passenger side...[/B]
Grrrr, don't mention hub nuts to me, it's a bit of a sore point - not to mention a sore shoulder or two... 230Nm my @rse, 1 hour of me jumping up and down on the end of an 18" breaker bar finally got one of them moving, the other one was only a half hour job... Either they were seized, way too tight or i've lost a sh1t load of weight. Mmmmmmm, pie....

rob, sump gasket?is it a carboard affair as mine looks like silicone of some description, either that or its been bodged with gasket sealer.it leaks a teensy bit so may get the bugger done next oil change.

Interesting that the Mk2 & 3 golf ones are different as ETKA lists them as the same for Ibiza/Mk2/mk3

How hard were they to fit? can i do it on the car? can't really be assed to remove the ball joint

Dont talk to me about sump gaskets - I cannot stop mine leaking when on trackdays, on road its fine but oil comes out on track - I think when under breaking as it all sloshes forward and gets out.

Sump gasket is easy job - jack front of car up, support on axle stands/plank of wood under subframe crossmember, easy to get at it then. My original gasket was fibre one with a smear of liquid gasket to stick it down. Now got a diesel windage tray which has rubber gasket moulded as part of it - looks like a much better solution but still leaks - under harsh conditions admittedly. Not sure I'd want to use liquid gasket only as its hard to apply the right amount and some could fall into sump - which I could only assume would be a bad thing. Care needed when dealing with bolts at either end of engine - gearbox and pully - they screw into ali castings so dead easy to crossthread / strip. Gearbox end is hardest to do just from a clearance point - various combinations of extensions and wobbly joints needed with mine but you guys have different gearbox so may be easier or harder.......a meet is needed methinks to assess.

Later

Dave

ps I should also say that the diesel windage tray thingy wont work with all sumps - the top face of the sump where it meets the block needs to be flat for it to work - some are pressed and have grooves in them, and these are no good.

i'm right in thinking that all the sumps on the abf are ally?,pretty sure the ibiza's wasn't,just scared the shit out of me hanging off the alloy sump on the end of a rachet trying to shift the bugger of of a sump plug

Rob - how easy are the rear wishbone bushes to remove / fit?

I'm guessing mine are gonna come out easy... jus the refitting i need to do swiftly (preferably wishbone still on the car)

Front wishbone rear bush is a ******* to fit, deffo need wishbone off car and a large vice or press (front one is dead easy) - pretty large bush and if you use a solid replacement like powerflex - really hard to get lined up for refitting since there's lots less free play in the system cf. std bush.
