A Brief guide on how to install the Passat W8 Interior light into a Mk4 Ibiza:
Please note, i originally used this guide, however i hereby make a few ammendments for Mk4 Ibiza owners:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dgace/w8_inner_light.htm
Firstly, the dimmer wire needs to be attached to the following wire behind your headlight switch. When spliced, run the wire up the a-pillar and through the front of the head lining towards the Interior Light socket.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h274/Edbutler/W8DimmerWire.jpg
Note - when liooking at the back of the plug, it is top right wire (blue/light blue)
The interior light has a rear facing female plug connector. This will foul on the alarm sensors. I do not know if it will fit if they are not present on non-alarmed cars however. I simply pulled off the connector with some pliers (it was getting dark and i was rushing!)
Chop off the male connector attached to the car so the three wires are exposed (Brown, Brown/Black, Red). Solder/attach some wire extensions onto them to give some soldering room.
The wires are connected to the W8 as follows (please excuse the mess!) Holding the W8 so that the connector is at the top, and the top pin number 1:
1: ---
2: Red
3: Brown
4: Brown/Black
5: ---
6: Wire from Dimmer
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h274/Edbutler/DSC04147Medium.jpg
When finished, secure the joints with insulation tape and insert the W8 light into the gap, rear end first, followed by pushing up the front. It will click into the roof and your all done!
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h274/Edbutler/DSC04148Medium.jpg
Dont forget to install 4x 501 bulbs in either! I opted for 2x White LED's for the map lights and 2x UV led's for a nice blue/purple glow :D
Please excuse the quality of the photos, i fitted this ages ago now and someones request has just prompted me to do this little guide... Good luck!

Watch out with the part numbers - The pasatts interior comes with GREY and BEIGE W8's. You want the GREY one but im not certain on part# sorry. If you find out, please give me a shout and ill update the FAQ. Cheers

Cheers for that Ed :)
this is the full list of parts (off a mk4 golf site) if you wanted to make your own adapters so as to keep the original bits intact
3B7 947 105F 2EN - W8 Light no sunroof, grey x1
000 979 103 - Contacts x 2
893 971 993 - Housing x 1
3B0 972 706 - Plug - plastic x 1
000 979 131A - Terminal pin - steel x 2
when i finally get round to doing mine ill tell you what parts you actually need, as i dont want to hack up any of the plugs or wires so its just a plug swap job
very handy guide mate
did your car come with the extra sunvisor or did you add it

These are the parts i have used to create a plug adapter
000 979 103 - Contacts x 2
893 971 993 - Housing x 1
000 979 131A - Terminal pin - steel x 2
you get 2 of these wires

and 2 of these wires
http://members.lycos.co.uk/lukey1/connector2.jpg
and a 3 pin female plug housing
i cut the 4 wires in half so you have 4 wires with 2 of each end, i soldered 3 of each together and fitted them into the plug housing
lika dis
http://members.lycos.co.uk/lukey1/plug.jpg
ive removed the connector on the light same as above and soldered the claw ends onto the relevant contacts on the light and heatshrinked over them. Havent fitted it into the car and havent run the dimmer lead, ill do it at the weekend

looks cool mate.
just finished wiring it all up, my plug worked great, unplug the old one, plug the adapter in and the light was fully functional apart from the button illumination which requires the extra wire.
The running of the wire down i spliced it into the dimmer in the end, the hardest part was trying to strip some insulation off the dimmer wire in the 2 x 2 inch hole you have to work in, theres also very little cable to play with, i found it very helpful to add extra lengths of wire to the dimmer lead and then solder them all together outside of the dash space
as far as getting the wire down there, easy, pull the rubber seal away from the door frame and poke the wire through the gap at the top where you can see light coming through from the winscreen, shove the wire behind the a pillar trim and the headlining and push the seal back on
I know people don't like them but being a cowardly novice I used scotch-loks.
Guinness
20-01-2007, 15:49
wots wrong with scotch locks I use them all the time lol
i never use them, i like to solder and heatshrink all wires i modify, i trust soldered and heatshrinked wires more than a scotch-lock that could vibrate free or something.
Guinness
20-01-2007, 19:33
the ones with the clip over are probably stronger than a solder joint if they are pressed firmly in, but I see your point, always nice to not damage wires though.
wots wrong with scotch locks I use them all the time lol
scotch locks are a fire hazard and are not water tight
they are renowned for causing high resistance or intermittent connections, also the larger sized ones can get hot as the blade thing inside is only rated at about 15 amps
BTW they are banned by quality alarm/ice fitters
solder and heat shrink is safer, smaller and tidier, also if done correctly is water tight
YOU ASKED
Guinness
20-01-2007, 22:32
can understand the intermitent connections but when you add to any conection you add resistance granted a solder connection is probably lower than a scotch lock. But for a little interior light or glove box light well be ok by a scotch lock. You can understand the alarms and in car entertainment being needed all the time, if a scotch lock fails on a light then its normaly simple to fix. saying this like I will probably solder my joints.
this is the light illumnated
http://members.lycos.co.uk/lukey1/W8light.jpg
this is the nice red aura it gives in the car
http://members.lycos.co.uk/lukey1/W8illum.jpg
the before pics i took you could only see the red of the CC and the blue of the headunit, it just bounces subtly off every surface it hits, also good for reading CDs under, you dont need to put the light on and mess up your focus till your eyes adjust again

Nowhere near my car at the mo' but looking at the pic the three centre illuminated bits are on one switch for 1) Always on 2) On when doors open (stays on for a bit after closing door or until ignition switched on) 3) Always off. The illuminated switches either side of these are for passenger or driver spotlights. If you look at post 1 you will see the buttons they correspond to and in that pic both side spots are on.

The wiring is easy enough - fitting was easy on the Leon too - think it took an hour at the most and i was taking my time :)
RichieRich
01-07-2007, 23:21
just have to remember which wire goes to which wire i guess... i think it one of these mods that looks harder than what it is.. lol never mind i will be having a go at it shortly
UncleFester
01-07-2007, 23:25
It really finishes off the inside of the car at night - just take your time with the wiring, check twice and cut once :)
As Fester says, dead easy really. I mean it when I say I had no prior knowledge of such matters. Most fiddly bit for me was guiding the wire for the dimmer over to the A pillar. Some just tuck it between the windscreen and the A pillar but I didn't want to do that. 1st attempt was 45 min job I suppose (mine was a sunroof version too) but could probably do it in 20 on a second go.
RichieRich
01-07-2007, 23:34
yeah that sounds the hardest bit and how the do u get the wire under the carpet and were u want it to go?
UncleFester
01-07-2007, 23:36
Wire under the carpet? Assuming the Ibiza is similar to the Leon, the dimmer wire will run from the dimmer switch out the side of the dash and up inside the drivers side A pillar, tuck under the headlining along the top of the windscreen then into the area the W8 light clips into.
RichieRich
01-07-2007, 23:42
yeah i ment the carpet on the roof.. lol does anybody want to fit it for me? lol as you have experience in doing it....
There's quite a good pictorial guide here (just ignore the sunroof bit if you haven't got one):
http://www.11tkp.co.uk/w8-light-install.htm
Although this was done with ready made connectors which makes the wiring easier. Still have to tap in the dimmer wire though.
Guinness
02-07-2007, 00:14
Iv done this :D pretty easy getting it accross the headlining as u can pull it a bit with some give saves taking it down. Wiring to the dimmer is the hardest part as there is limited room to solder in

Iv done this was rather easy I must say on the normal one Im sure the wiring diagram is on the guide page for the w8 light.

24-07-2007, 23:20
the thing is i followed how to do it and it seems like the wires are not used the same as nothink works how that is set up but my old light does still work if i plug that back in which i did... now im just confused lol as there is no real reason why it should do this :(
RichieRich
26-07-2007, 21:58
well i think i have sorted it i just need a fuse to check it fully, reason for my mistake was due to my plastic adapter that fits onto the w8 light, and that is because 1 to 6 was the other way around to the instructions on the first page lol

Well mine did and so did the one i just got for anouther member
How have people who have kept the original plugs made the W8 light fit with the alarm in the way? can you move alarm back slightly? or trim some of the W8 light?
Theres always one!!! I broke this while trying to remove the head light plug :( does anyone know the part number and if it comes as 2 bits or 1 bit?

and then u tap into the blue wire or i think the blue and white cable? there is two u can choose from, i could try and get a pic of the wires up close but it would be from my golf lol
blue wire is constant live the blue and white makes the lights on the w8 light dim with the interior lights
Sonmething I realised when fitting the light, my rear view mirror is an autodimming one, meaning it has 2 red led's that are on when the lights are on. I'd be able to tap into the correct wire on this yeh?
if u can tap the red lights into the mirror it would be a lot easier
Well the wiring from the mirror runs up and can be seen in the same compartment for the W8 light wires above the interior light. Was just hoping to find the right wire.
Also, i've installed it, and the light works with opening the doors, but won't stay permanantly on when i push that particular button
sounds like you have one or 2 of the wires round the wrong way. you need to get youself a test lamp and check that the wiring is the same on yours as you have the funky mirror. i had this problem when putting it into a golf and it turned out to be one wire wrong.
RichieRich
28-04-2009, 19:42
you will need the permanent live which you should have with the original wires, then u tab the extra wire u need for the led's with the positive wire that goto the led's in the mirror?
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b373/nickandrews/280420091115.jpg
Any ideas which one?
Right I still have an issue, i've checked the wires, seems ok to me, but I havnt connected the dimmer wire, just the other 3.
So when I open the door, the main light comes on, as it should, the 2 map lights work, as they should. But when I start up, all 4 lights come on, and stay dim. And also the permanant on function of the main light doesn't work.
Anybody know why? Could it be because the dimmer isnt connected?
it works with or without the dimmer connected. it sounds like you have one wire on the wrong terminal. can you send a piccy of whats connected where and the end of the plug on the car

I'm wondering why you need to trail a wire down the A pillar to the blue and white wire behind the light switch when my interior light already has an auto dimming function as standard?

the dimmer wire is not to auto dim the light. it is to power the ambient lighting. if conected to the interior light dimmer when you dim the lights it will dim the ambient lighting aswell. it also means the ambient light only comes on when you have your sidelights on
Thanks for the info. So I take it the blue and white wire isn't actually a dimmer wire, it gives 12v when the side lights are on?

I've just today fitted a W8 to my '05 Ibiza FR Tdi and I didn't find it easy at all. Next to the light in the roof in my car is the interior sensor unit for the alarm and it certainly got in the way! :) I ended up shaving of loads off the rear left hand side of the W8 and a bit of the casing for the sensor too.
Not having done one before I found the wiring an absolute doddle compared to fitting the bloomin thing in the roof liner. Still I've now made it into the 'I've Got a W8 Light in My Car' Club :D
On a point of note though, my having a centre sun visor does hold the lining and W8 better. BTW, I'm not keen on the fact the W8 is only held in by two clips at the front and rests on a near flimsy piece of plastic at the back. I'd certainly have preferred screws for sure :)
I'm typing this after going for a drive at night to see what I thought of the W8 - my partner thought it stylish...I'm not convinced yet but think I'll grow to like it. The W8's W5W bulbs feel like 100w at night [B)]
I certainly doff my cap to anyone who comes up smiling after fitting one of these to a high standard in a short period of time... it took me hours to do!:headhurt:

you wont get it in if you are using the plug on the light. you will have to solder the connectors to the pins on the light and also cut the cage off roud the pins

They're sold separately on eBay. Two sellers at the moment; this one is the cheapest:

Then the light either from VW, or there's sellers on eBay again. Part cost is probably around £45 (non-sunroof).

Then the light either from VW, or there's sellers on eBay again. Part cost is probably around £45 (non-sunroof). I made my own wiring loom which once I'd got all the bits was pretty easy. But, being totally honest I think I'd buy one made up in future as for all the time I spent messing about ordering connectors, driving to the dealer to collect, wiring the connectors etc it worked out about the same in real cost. Plus one VW dealer wouldn't order one of the connectors unless I bulk bought 5 of them...ahem like I'm going to do that!
I didn't know before speaking with a VW parts guy that extra fitted wiring should be yellow (I don't know why) - Here's another W8 loom on ebay (yellow one) (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-BORA-PASSAT-W8-Light-Wiring-Loom-Adapter-R32-FR-/160655361201?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2567ce44b1)
I know it was my very lucky day but I got my brand new boxed W8 light for 99p on ebay - no one bid on it but me...so happy days.
P.S. Getting the damn W8 to fit alongside my alarm sensor unit was a complete ball ache...I found doing the wiring loom was very very easy in comparison. BTW a centre sun visor helps keep the W8 secured.

Thank you for this. Just to double check that loom will work for a Mk4 Seat Ibiza?
Red Panda
30-09-2011, 15:31
Just to double check that loom will work for a Mk4 Seat Ibiza?Yes, I'd say so. The connector with three leads going into it is what you connect the existing interior light connector into. The more complex connector is what goes into the W8.
The single lead which comes out of the more complex connector needs to be fed from the interior light round the edge of the top left side of the roof lining and down the front pillar and behind the fuse box. You then need to connect/solder it to one of the the main light switch leads so the W8 is then on the dimming circuit.
