Ok,
I need better brakes. Simple as that. I'm looking at getting some EBC Discs and Greenstuff pads. Thing is, I obviously want some pretty X-Drilled and grooved ones if possible.
Do any of you guys know if slightly bigger discs will go onto my 1.4 '97 Ibiza, and still allow me to keep the original calipers?
Obviously I need to keep the 4 stud etc..

Thanks in advance

You could try Zimmerman cross drilled disks and Pagid fast road pads. Available from German & Swedish branches.

Thanks Bill,

When ordering these though, do I tell them it's a 1.4 SXe, or some other model that will also fit my car ?

For eg, my old Mk2 Golf Driver could take GTi discs, as the callipers were the same size. GTi discs were much better than 1.6 driver ones. Hence I always bought GTi discs/pads.

Thanks

kurt,
Ive got a 1.4 SXE just like you and I am looking into fitting bigger diameter brakes and a rear drum to disc conversion, but you need to change the hubs for gti girling set-up, for the moment ive got ebc greenstuff pads and grooved discs, which are an improvment.

Stu,

Sorry to be a pain the arse, but when you got the EBC Discs and pads, did you say it was for a 1.4 SXe?

I've not seen the X-Drilled discs advertised for it you see, only the bigger engine models. I don't want to order great looking performance discs that don't fit !!

Cheers

When you buy the pads (EBC) they will ask you in the shop for what car you are putting them on, and they will check up in their directory of sizes to check they get the right ones.

The correct sizes should be in that book.

I told them I wanted them for a 1.8T Cupra when I went to get mine and they gave looked them up and they were the right ones, which will be fitted onto my 1.8T Cupra this week weather permitting..

If you have uprated discs then tell them the size of the disc (1.8T are 280mm fronts, like the G60's) and they should be able to find the right ones.

Measure the thickness of the pads when you get them... I bet they're 15.6mm as opposed 19.6mm which is the correct pad thickness for a G60 pad. EBC, to my knowledge don't make a G60/280 pad... They "get away" with selling a normal Gti pad cos it fits. The backplates are the same, hence fit Ok.
You are likely to by buying "part worn" by thickness pads.

My 2 penneth. Tried em.. Gave them the benefit of the doubt and still think they're hyped for what they are. Pagid 5051's are the real deal.
Let me know how thick they are.... They may make then in the right thickness now perhaps..?
cheers

Kurt,

Yes, I ordered the greenstuff pads as normal quoting it for my Car in the normal way, to make sure my motorspares place did'nt **** up I took off the pads and traced around them on paper and made a positive match.

As for the discs, EBC dont do a turbo groove disc as my discs were solid. so I ordered plain ones and got my friends at Hi-Spec motorsport engineering, in Dartford to whack some grooves into the discs as a favour, in total, the discs and pads only cost me £30

All I Can say is do not buy them from Larkspeed (northern company)

they charged me £82 just for the fronts...!!! and the dealer then charges £76 to have them fitted..!! Ouch..

Hunt around is the choice.. as the prices seem to vary quite a lot.

Bill, thanks for the info.

Have you got some contact details for German & Swedish ? URL ?

Also, is it a hard job to replace them or is it best to get a dealer to do it ???

Thanks again :)
