I am currently having to replace my front two tyres after only 7500 miles DOOH!

I am unsure wheather to change to the Bridgestones S02's or stick with the P-Zero's

What do you think or any recomendations for any other tyres on the market, I am having to really fight the urge to replace standard wheels

1 - the standard wheels with the AP's and spacers is NOT working, I spoke to a friend of a friend from Raliart who said this setup is not good when running such strong brakes and 210 bhp loads of tech stuff all way above my head but made perfect sense when I thought about it hub onto wheel or hub onto spacer onto wheel.
2 - The wheel has come off twice now.
3 - Christmas coming and I have ran out of cash.
4 - If I replace do I go for a wider 16inch or go for the 17 am a little bit concerned about the talk of losing accelaration.
5 - Insurance extra costs.

All comments gladly recieved.

Apparently the P-zeros arent that good in the wet and with winter just around the corner thats not what you want!,

The S02 pp's are a very good tyre if you can find anyone still selling them as they have been discontinued now! and the S03 isnt the replacement for it (i am running S03's myself and dont rate them overall that highly)

The general opinion after a long thread on tyres on the Leon forum was either Toyo t1-S or yoko A539 or goodyear eagle F1 were the best tyre choices,

Hope this helps you.

Duncan- was yours the one with the loose wheel at Combe?
What wheel bolts are you using?
What is different about your hubs? (Bell for disk fitted to stock hub, but what thickness is it?)
Std bolts are too short as standard. Minimum is 1.5 x thread diameter engagement. Factory bolts did'nt even have this on mine. (rounded shoulder bolts right?)
thought about converting to studs?

As for tyres I really like Goodyear Eagle F1's. 2nd to none in my experience. I would go for a wider 16" wheel though in 7" or possibly 7.5".

:D :D

Yes that was me at combe.
I am using the longer bolts as recommended by AP the same ones everyone else is using with the conversion.(no one else has had a wheel come off though)
In regards to the hub thickness etc. I am not sure Danny would know at RSD as they did the conversion if thats any help.

Yes they are the rounded shoulder bolts not sure about the converting to studs, not sure what would be involved. Thought replacing wheels would be the best solution but its just the pennies.

If any of you are going to track day this Friday I will pick brains there am going to try again, keeping a very close eye on the bolts though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll bring my torque wrench with me Friday. :)
I would be intrigued to know how much thread engagement you get into your hub from your bolts. You can convert to studs with all the parts available from Demon Tweeks.
I converted my Jetta to studs last year, as I change my wheels a lot for track days etc... and my car is old with over 160,000miles on it. Its a straightforward job.
I also have had a repeated wheel loose problems last year on my Jetta, at Combe ! My problem turned out to be the wheel refinishing paint getting soft when hot, allowing the bolt to rotate loose. I had refinished the wheels in black before hand. The cure for me was to abrade the seat on the wheel, where the bolts shoulder pulls up against, and get back to metal. After I did this, I have not had any further problems, although I always retorque my wheels after track sessions now - just in case!

Mosser,

I would NOT recommend the Yoko A539s... I've had them on my old 205 1.9GTI and my Pug 306 and they are not very good at all!!! Honestly. I used to like the A510s and A520s but the 539s have not grip at all.

When I bought my 205 GTI it had 4 completely different tyres on it, and not in very good condition, but the car handled suprisingly well! When I replaced all 4 wheels with new A539s the car was felt like it had much less grip... corners that I used to throw the car around everyday I now had to take very slowly!

OK, so they may work better with the Ibiza but personally I wouldn't recommend them.

I think the best tires I have used are Toyo Proxes. I had the Yokohama's on my Impreza and thought they where O.K., until I tried the Toyo's. They made a huge difference and inspired a new confidence in the car, if you go for them I don't think you will be disappointed.

Alternatively Bridgestone SO2's (are the 3's out yet) are *supposed* to be better than the Proxes but are not as forgiving, I will definately be getting Toyo's on my Cupra once I have some decent wheels for it.

Matt.

i had 539's on the front of my wagon for 8000 blissful miles, thought they were really stable when hurtling round corners, only towards the end of their lives was i able to slide at will!!!

Yeah, I've got 3 mates that swear that the 539s are the best tyres they have ever tried and would not go for anything else, and 3 mates who have tried them and have not been very impressed. Its wrth noting that the 3 who like them were running them on VWs and those that didn't like them were runnin them on Pugs and a Fiat Punto GT.

Don't know if different tyres suit different makes of car.

Maybe its down to driving style.... the 539s gripped well upto the limit and then SUDDENLY let go. When they go they go and its difficult to keep the car from spinning. Other tyres may not have quite so much grip but they lose traction more progressively, so you can feel them sliding and its easy to control.

I prefer the latter.

Cheers,
Ben

I found that when brand new, they had very poor grip and damp traction was awefull.
They probably get better with some miles and les tread on them though, as most people rate them.
Toyo Proxes T1's are not he same as T1S's though.... T1's got the rave reviews.... and you can't get them now.. only T1S's
Subtle but maybe significant change perhaps?

Cheers for all the replys, Bill I will find you on Friday at the track day to pick your brains about the wheel problem further. If you could bring your torque wrench that would be great.

See you all Friday...............
