Ok, guys, i'm well onto getting most of my new ICE ready for my leon arriving, BUT the final part of the equation is the SUB!

I really could do with keeping the boot space, and so thought maybe i'd have a look at putting some 6.5" JL Audio SUBS into the rear doors instead of 1 x 10" or 12" in a box.

So, 1) are these 6.5" any good, i read some good reviews, and 2) although they will fit, is the space inside the doors enough of an enclosure for them to work?

does anyone know what the actual measurement of space is inside the doors in cubic feet?

you might also wanna have a word with pete over at icecavern:)

www.icecavern.co.uk

We tried the Autoleads speaker convertors that are available for the Golf which will enable you to put 200mm speakers in each front door speaker location but they foul the door card...

Pete has some more details on this:)

The 6.5" JL 'subs' are quite good but are never going to replace a good 10" or 12". If you were to run a subless system then the Dynaudios that I run are about as good as you are going to get as the midbass is getting on for 7" and can be run full range without any problems.

I am currently undecided as to how to lay my install out in the boot of the Leon (still to buy!). I will either have the amps to one side and the sub up against the seats or make a false floor. My job is made easier as I have a 10" Illusion Audio sub which measures a mere 75mm mounted depth. The box its currently in is only 120mm thick and it could thinner if I were to use carbon fibre. Personally I think its much better than my 10W6 ever was.

I've just had to part company with my Leon. I also wanted to keep as much boot space as possible so I went for a free air sub, mounted in the shelf. It obviously didn't knock out serious bangin boom, but was more than suitable to my taste. I still have it if your interested as it will not fit in the Cordoba I now drive. its a 12" JL Audio, so if your interested then drop me a mail, any reasonable offer will be accepted.

I have heard 6" bass units from Rainbow and Focal being operated as bass units and the bass was very impressive considering the size of the drivers, however these were in specially designed enclosures tailored to the drivers and utilising a port.

Mounting them free air into a door panel will give different results, it really depends on how much bass you want.

As Darryl says the Dynaudio speakers give excellent mid bass results, I had the 3 way 8" components in my Ibiza and that is as close as I have heard without resorting to subs, but I still wanted more bass.

How important is your spare wheel?

I ditched mine and installed 3 x 10" Kicker Solobarics in a sealed enclosure custom made to fit the shape of the spare wheel well.

A lot of work but well worth it.

Just a suggestion hope you work it out in the end.
