Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is true that if you own a car with a Turbo and have either done a really long journey or given it a good caining that you should let the car sit at idling point once stopped before you turn it off and also let the car warm up before you cain it as well?

Thanks

Hiya sexy lady

For obvious reasons, you should let your car warm up before you cain it, because of letting oil get round the engine and getting to the right temp. Also if you frash your car from cold, you run the risk of buggering your head gasket and other engine components.

And the other thing, when you frash your car and you come to the end of your journey, yes its ideal that you leave your car for a minute or so, just to let the turbo idle and let the oil finish circulating, this is to stop the turbo from cracking and shortening the life of the turbo.

Hope this helps babe.
Have a nice day

Twas my belief that the cupra pumped something (water / oil) round the system after ignition off to stop the oil carbonising on the turbine.

Dormouse you're right, the 20VT engine water pump will circulate water round the engine after you've turned it off but that is not going to help the oil in the turbo bearings if it is red hot when you turn it off.

I run a Saab Turbo and a Leon Cupra. On both cars I take it steady until they have reached normal operating temperature befire putting the engine under full load. Similarly if I have just thrashed one of them home I'll either drive gently for the last couple of miles to let the engine cool down a bit or let it idle for a couple of minutes before switching off. Touch wood as a result both cars engines are in top condition.

Dormouse,

Yes the Ibiza does pump coolant (Or something) around for about 5 minutes after you turn the car off to cool the turbo, but the owners manual still says that you should let the car idle for a minute or two if you have been driving the car hard.

K'

As tigger 2 will know the drive back into N.Baddesley is fairly sedate, so that should let the turbo cool a bit.

Yes you are all correct, as Dormouse says it is best to let the car stand idling for a brief spell before thrashing it and also to take it steady for a couple of miles before getting home/ or stand for a couple of mins to cool the turbo, etc.

I know this, as i use to have an escort turbo, and that was treated the same as my beezer and i never had problems.

Hope this helps you out.

If you are the impatient sort, you can get whats caled a turbo timer. This will allow you to get out of the car and alarm it while the engine runs @ idle for a set amount of time.

I think if you read the owners manual for any car turbo or non-turbo they all say to let the car cool down for a couple of minutes if it has just been driven hard. Thats no good if you're in a hurry though hence the reason why you were driving "hard" in the first place!
