Ok....so APR is running what looks like an attractive deal, me motor has got nearly 10 thou under the bonnet, so I decided to investigate the insurance side of things.

Anyway, I'm insured through Norwich Union Direct, and they tell me - nope! We do not support any modifications at all! I was most surprised, as when I took out the policy they claimed that they would supporting chipping, at a loading of 10%.

So... firstly - does anyone here insure through Norwich Union who has chipped their car?

Second - what insurers do support chipping and how much extra for a chip?

You might want to call NU again as different people in an insurance company tend to give different answers to different questions.

example. I ask Tesco about my stereo. First time i call they say it will cost and additional £175!!! Second time i call i am informed that my premium comes with £1000 of stereo cover!!!

I signed up with greenlight this month and they were *VERY* helpful. I spoke in length to a guy about his 1.8T golf, the merits of chipping, induction and powerflow ;) They are very mod friendly and add reasonable money for doing so!

Ouch....doesn't look like I'm gonna get chipped...

Currently paying: £508
Direct Line (without chip): £515
Direct Line (with chip): £790
Adrian Flux (with chip): £806
Greenlight (with chip): £960 (might have been £906...whatever....silly money anyway...)

Boooooo.

I'm with Tesco (£1500 stereo cover by the way...) and they charged me £58 for the Prodrive Performance Package - power up 20%. Bargain I thought... :)

i wonder how the insurance companies will take to the SEAT upgrade IF it becomes available, and whether it constitutes an 'upgrade' in teh sense that it's a dealer fit option (cough cough ahem ;) )

Hmm....is their base silly then or what? The quote I have from them was simply horrible.

I'll ring Tesco's tomorrow.

I spoke to Tesco this morning, and the guy said it would be a 38% increase on the premium if I had the 130->180 APR upgrade (which is also a 38% power increase). Is that a coincidence? Surely the premium isnt directly proportional to engine power??? (I can see a 'base' figure plus another amount which is proportional to power but not the whole thing!?)

Have a word with Fen, RB5 (I think). He's had his Ibiza Tdi chipped by APR.

i think most insurance companies use a proportional scale of power increases against a scale of premium increases dependant on your risk.

if you know what i mean.

Tried these guys at Greenlight just now, the guy I spoke said that I needed a few years no claims before I could even get a quote from them, which I haven't got as I had company cars previously.

And before you suggest contacting the companies previous insurance companies to get something in writing I can't.

Nope, I don 't work for them, but I have hadmy car insurance with them for 5 years and they've consistently cost a fraction of anyone else - saved over 50% on alternative quotes. I;
've had a few high group cars, my last was a group 18 Civic VTi-S, Norwich union £1200 Privilege £680 !!

On my Leon, NU £480 Privilege £350 !!!

It's worth getting an online quote from them.

Just been on the phone to Esure about my Toad Cat 1 Alarm and posed the question about modifications, tuning, chipping and the like.

Anyone with Esure (or thinking of going with Esure) listen up. They won't cover any form of chipping/tuning, in fact any modification (even different Alloys!!) The guy I spoke to, laughed with me and said they'd allow some Go Faster Stripes!!! :)

So thats put the possibility of getting an UPsolute Chip installed on hold til at least August 2003.

Oh well, cheapest insurance company for me at the moment.

Goot :)
