Since 132 folks read my "how does it work?" question....I assume you'll be interested to find out........

With a little help from a member of the TDIClub forum:-

"There are two layshafts inside this transmission (not counting the idler shaft for reverse). Most transmissions have only one layshaft with the final drive pinion gear on the end of it.
With this transmission, gears 1 through 4 go through one layshaft which has pinion gear "A" on the end of it. Gears 5 and 6 go through the same input shaft but a different parallel layshaft which drives the final drive pinion gear "B" on it (and that gear is a different size, thus the final drive ratio is different). The final drive has 2 different pinion gears operating it, one on each of the two parallel shafts. I don't know whether reverse goes through shaft "A" or shaft "B"."

Obviously more expensive, but this provides a gearbox that is in theory as "short" as a conventional 4-speeder....just a little "wider" ~ ideal for transverse engines!

It also means that it is intrinsically (sp?) "fail-safe" so you can't get the potentially engine-popping "over-rev" situation I described.

Neat solution.

See, Mik? It was kinda like my ASCII art, after all! ;) ;)
