My brother who has a V5 has just had his ignition coils replaced!!

Apparently problems started about three weeks ago when the engine management light came on. He took it down to the dealers who had a look and declared it 'seems OK now' but a mile down the road on it comes again. Took it back again to be told it needs a new Lamda sensor which was fitted a few days later. He pick up the car and all is well for a week until one day it starts misfiring badly, limps back to the dealers only to be told an ignition coil has gone and he will have to leave it with them as they will have to replace all 5 coils. Anyway 1 week later he is reunited with his V5 and all is well.

So guys if you read the Leon sections you will be aware that the Cupra boys are suffering from this problem also.

Looks like it's contageous and has infected V5's so be warned :(

My ibiza 1.8T went yesterday, started her up and she sounded rough. AA came out and said right away that it was a coil. Car is sat at my local dealers now. :(

Would you believe it my mate's V5 has gone and done the same and to cap it off the dealer said they can't fix until after Christmas. :yikes:

Anyway after heated discussions and a formal complaint lodged with Seat UK he has got a half decent courtesy car and a 'parts should arrive next week Sir' reply.

Damn am I glad I went for the diesel !

I had coil problems on my 20V V5 as well. I'd just collected it from being serviced (by Bournemouth SEAT) and had only got a few hundred yards when it started missing at low revs. 10 secs later it stopped altogether with steam or white smoke coming out from under the bonnet. It turned out that one of the coils had totally burnt out, melting the leads in the process. Sounds like this is something that should really be on a recall notice.

I've also had the lambda sensor replaced after the diagnostics light came on so I reckon I've had the complete set now.

Re getting spares: I've got the car on a PCP, covering tyres, oil, replacement car and everything so the dealer just fixes it and bills VAG, including for a rental car if needed. The dealer is excellent and will take bits from their car stock if needed to get you back on the road. It's a shame that SEAT won't back up the few good dealers it seems to have.

Finally reunited with my V5 after only 4 days what a relief!!! wasn't looking forward to christmas without my baby. Kinda feel sorry for the people that feel they have to buy a Nissan Primera, it's like driving a greyhound bus :p

Are V5's being recalled or do I just phone the dealer?
Will they change the coils even if I don't seem to be having any probs with it
