Now that brought a smile to my face...
:D
Despite being only 12 days into Leon Cupra ownership, I'm having an awful lot of fun with VDub and Audi drivers. They REALLY don't like our cars do they? Wonder why...???
My Leon Cupra is a leased company car, same monthly lease price as a VW Bora 1.6 SE!!!!!!!!!! - thought about that one long and hard.
There are 5 VW golf's in the company car park and one Seat (mine), but not for much longer. Already one more Leon Cupra on order and possibly more next year - KEEP SPREADING THE GOSPEL
(a bloody good car or a VW badge - no contest) :D

I think I gotta get one and go me a S3 huntin'.... hahahahaha
Pete
I like that!!,
It would seem that vw are realigning all their brands now and the seat is their performance range, whilst vw are designed for drivers in their mid 40's, and audi's are designed to be a poor mans bmw without the performance!!
You gotta feel sorry for all those audi bods who have payed over the odds for their cars only to find out that they could have bought a better car for much less money!
I like that :D All this holy than thou shite, were the top marque why aint we getting power like that.
Cause unfortunatly, the Audi is a middle class, executive car thats their main stomping ground, and twenty & thirty somethings with family's or not dont appeal to their image as the big fat german banker of cars.
SEAT's on the other hand, are plugging themselves as the young lively and sporty arm of VAG, and successful they are too, and most importantly affordable to the masses.
I could of gone and bought an S3 last year, but i take offence to having to pay 4-5 thousand more for a car just cause it has 4 rings on the front.
The only thing the Audi owners will see is proabably a larger return on their used car than us SEAT owners will, but then we paid less in the first place. :D
Just to set it straight in case any Audi peeps are reading this
I can afford to buy an Audi, but i think the SEAT's are going places Audi isnt at the moment. If SEAT decide to make the Leon a 3 door, which i hear is in the pipeline, then watch out A3/S3 ;)
I personally like Audi....and vee-dub too (I guess).....but I sure wouldn't pay the premium over the Leon (in fact.....I sure didn't )
I'd also happily own a skoda now....never thought I'd say that!
My mate has a MY99 Golf 1.8T GTi which he is just about to replace with a MY02 model. Took him for a spin in my car the other day and he was well impressed / pissed off. His company car list includes Audi and VW.....but not SEAT.
The level of standard kit in my car is miles above his current car, and still well above the MY02 he is about to get......tee-hee. He didn't feel that the materials in mine were of "lesser quality", and he commented on the suspension firmness / control.....
i hope they dont all start getting SEAT's to be honest , as most of seem to STILL think that AUDI's are PREMIUM marque , which to be honest YEP in ££££ they may be , BUT why the cheap brand marking , only fuel's the VALUE FOR MONEY argument all day long , what they seem to forget is that VW GROUP is the owner not FECKIN AUDI and they aint nicking stuff its called multi transferable parts policy and it means LEON's get bigger discs than the DODWDY's so how can we steal summat that is different
and no I aint in the mood
sorry lee EDIT to suit

You having a bad day flapper?
:) Cheer up bud... it aint worth it.
:)
Bill
Just take satisfaction in the fact that everyones audi tt's seem to be falling apart at the moment!!!, dash rattles, lack of composure after 80,000k's, stuck windows, stuck sunroof's,
Those things sound far worse than our seat's :D :D
sorry bill , but come spend all day with me gettin the "JUST A CHEAP VW/AUDI" in your ear all day , add to that the next door JAPCRAP "WE'RE better than you" attitude , gets to you after a while
AGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH :(
thats better , i apologise now to any AUDI / ex AUDI bods in ere otherwise you will all think i'm turning into one of them otherwise , still , gives ya arteries a clear out eh ?
hehehehe
Mosser,
your comment that VW's are for the mid 40's. I just fall into that age range (must be the oldest member?). I know the old brain cells are now dying at an alarming rate but I still had enough left to get a Leon Cupra over a Golf GTi.
I have had the car 3 weeks now and can't fault it.
Boot is big enough for my 'zimmer' frame and plenty of storage space for my Preparation H cream.
I do feel old as most other members seem to be in their teens/20's - BUT LIFE DOES NOT END AT 40! (you just tire more easily)
Bazzer
I'm 43 soon... Guess that makes me prime Audi material too! I've never even come close to buying one though. Wonder where I went wrong...?
Mike
Well I'm 29 and i still dont want an audi!, It's just that everything i see and read about vag group cars seems to be targeting the vw/audi portion at older drivers and seat/skoda at younger drivers!!,
You obviously had the sence to choose a fun car over just buying a badge!,
In 10 years time i still wont be buying an audi unless they drop their prices anyway!, I'm not paying 5k for a badge!!
Some interesting comments:eek:
Ive got a slightly different viewpoint to some on here. Its only since the launch of the Leon with its 1.8T engine in that Seat has produced anything worth opening your wallet for. Now at least it has fitted the 1.8T engine into the Ibiza soon afterwards. Sorry I know some will get offended by the above.
Audi has led the way in producing the engines we now see fitted to our cars. I had a 1.8T engine in my A4 4 years ago. Audi also developed the 180 and 225 engine. With its S Series of cars Audi still leads the way. Maybe if Seat fitted the 2.7T engine into the Leon I'll change my tune:devil:
The S3 is a different car compared to the Leon and IMHO just about worth the money. If you have the funds the S3 is a much better car to own and drive. If we had a decent importer in this country though we might see the real Leon's rather than the luke warm ones we get here. Again the Leon with 4wd and V6 Komp would get my vote over the S3.
Audi has now upgraded the S3 to 225 and the TT to 240. You might also find the average age of TT and S3's to be early 30's max.
If Seat really wants to frighten the Audi boys, then the importer needs to wake up and sniff the roses. Audi boys are safe in the knowlege that Seat UK wants to be in a sector where it doesnt fight with Audi for sales.

Personally i still rate the old pre turbo ibiza's and cordies. For the money they are a great buy and will waste a similar golf variant anyday. I prefer the handling on my 97 8v to that on a leon. DOnt get me wrong the leons a great car. Nice and comfy with a fair bit of space on the back seat! ;) ( Dont worry Paul your demo cars still tidy!:p ) but im more of a B road blatter and the handling and power of the old 8v suits that a bit better but i guess if i were doing a lot of miles then i would prefer the comfort of something like a leon. Wouldnt mess with one in a straight line though! Horses for courses i guess and as the old favorite saying for this forum goes. 'You pays your money........'

You could always buy mine off me and swap em! hahaha
:D
One thing i will say about the leon is that the standard stereo is pretty good! lucky really cos i think it would be a nightmare to change!
Marc
and just in case any AUDI owners wanna spout off about US nickin all the gear from them , THEY got it from the GOLF the A3 is golf underneath as is the LEON albeit with minor alterations etc , so to be honest i think its the VEE DUBS who should be moaning
AUDI (originally AUTO UNION) was made from 4 companies joining YES JOINING together mmmm sounds familiar SKODA/SEAT/AUDI/VW
i digress the spouting above to take off my hat to AUDI as they have/are/will be one of if not THE most innovative designers and idea mongerers in the business , mind you with all that profit even RELIANT can buy the best too ....hehehe
PS info just in , DID YOU KNOW that some/most (not known exactly) AUDI A3's are built in SPAIN , YEP SPAIN ROFLMAO .mmmm
VW bits built by SEAT , bloody good cars are they eh ? hehehehe
Not sure having things built in Spain is something to shout about. Really worry if your car was built betweeen 2&4pm:o
Isnt the Golf built on the A3 platform. The A3 was certainly out first.
What cars verdict on the Leon Cupra
A GTI FOR GROWN UPS :D
Jonathan
The stereo in the leon is extremely easy to change!, i have fitted a decent alpine head unit in mine and it only took about 30 minutes to change
Just paid a visit to 'audi-sport.net' > 'general car discussion' > 'this is getting ridiculous' (2 whole pages) - these guys are really pissed - not had such a good laugh for ages.
noticed they have a 'VW/Seat/Skoda' forum - very tempting :D
One look at their forum reminds me why I bought a Seat rather than an Audi - they all seem so concerned with defending their purchase while the average Seat owner just gets on with enjoying theirs.
What a bunch of sad, pretentious people they are....
:D :D :D :D
You guys are only jealous because your cars look so shite!! :repuke:

Dean,
Looks are not everything, it's like my view with women:
Beauty is only a light switch away and its when your inside that counts!!! :D
I might have liked the S3 dean if it wasnt for that stupid chunk of grey plastic right in the middle of the rear bumper!!, whats that there for!?,
In my opinion the S3 doesnt look any better than the Leon!
and i certainly wouldnt pay an extra £8k just for the 4 wheel drive that it gets, i found on my test drive of the S3, it really bogged the clutch down, and was difficult to get a decent take off without killing the clutch!
Although the Leon doesnt handle overall as well as the S3, the Leon always felt more nimble in its handling for everyday driving which made it a better buy for me, and when i race S3's they rarely beat me :D

Seeing as i'm only down the road from you I'll take that as a challenge :)
You'll have to wait till i get my licence back first though:mad:
Ok dean!, it would be interesting to do a comparison against someone that is trying their best!,
and if you havent driven a leon before, you can give it a try and see what you think!, sorry to hear what happened to you licence btw, real bummer
What MAF mod have you done btw ?
Hey Dean,
I see your running SO3's like me!, what do you think of them?
Mosser
I love the S03's they are a wicked tyre regardless of what people seem to think, for some reason some people see to give them a bad rep ??? They make my car stick to the road like glue
With regards to the MAF mod, not sure if you guys have the same entry system into your engine.
In the S3 there are 3 screens in the tube where the MAF sensor sits after the air filter. You can remove these and you should get a better airflow by around 25% but you need to be careful as they are there for a reason in part.!!
One is made of metal and the others are plastic grids, drop me a mail if you have the screens in your car and need more info
Dean
Cheers, i will take mine apart tomorrow and have a look
never mind eh! :)
and the age range thing is bollox:D
I know lots or early twenties S3 drivers, it's a label thing alot of the time!
It all depends where you live as well, when I bought my Audi there wasn't any other VAG model worth touching, now is different,
the S3 is to get the 3.2V6 in a couple of years and be the only VAG hatchback to have an aluminium bodyshell;)
Aluminium shell? Good luck to them then; it dents so easily...
you guys noticed a similarity?
you all argue the same as we do, just in reverse and you all jump to defend the same!
doesn't the Leon get the K03 turbo btw?
the S3 uses the larger K04, so more chippable!
I was just going from experience. I had aluminium panels in my Lotus Sunbeam when I competed in the European Rally Championship back in the early '80s. I had more panel damage from careless "parkers" on the odd time I used the car on the road, than I did in competition (almost...;) ).
My 1st Impreza Turbo road car had an aluminium bonnet and it did mark easily. I got a choice when I ordered the 2nd and went for steel. When I got the 3rd, Subaru were only offering steel bonnets anyway.
By the way - I loved the original Ur Quattro, and whilst I never owned one (my navigator did), I drove his for many happy miles. However, nothing since from the company, has tempted me to take the same route.
I was told that the S3 was made for a time at the same factory as the Leon !!
Mosser
My take on the S3 vs Leon, and why its JUST worth the extra.
Interior
Even though the switches etc are Audi in the Leon the quality of the bits is not as good. Sit in the Audi's Recaros, and then in the Leon's and the Leon feel thinner than Kate Moss's waist. Things like the cup holders are not as damped and nice in their operation. The dials are a class apart.
Exterior
You have Xenon and 17" wheels as std on the S3 which is nice. IMHO the S3 does look nicer. The quality of the paint is better than on the Leon
Drivetrain
The Leon does have a slicker gearbox than the S3. S3 has ESP as std. You have 4wd which unless you can have RWD is loads better in a powerfull Hot Hatch than FWD. You are right on the edge with 212bhp. If we lived in California with no rain I might change my stance.
Handling
Whilst the leon does feel a touch sharper, the S3 will corner faster and grip longer. Understeer kicks in early in the Leon. Obviously in the wet (and we have a few days like that) you wont see which way the S3 went.
Performance wise
The S3 is a much quicker car than a std Leon. If youve raced one and won whilst your car was std, then a) your a better driver b)he wasnt trying. With your car chipped you will be the equal. You infact have a lot in common with Wando as he will argue that his A3 is as quick as an S3. With the S3 and its extra money, you are getting a car with the larger turbo and twin intercooler. The engine is also uprated. For the money you would spend getting 250bhp, the S3 would have 330bhp. You would struggle for grip, he wouldnt. The S3 is also one of the best cars out there that responds to chipping. The car is transformed with most chips giving 255bhp and 265lbft.
Depreciation
With most cars IMHO its not what you pay, but how much you lose. A 15k Mondeo would cost you more money in three years than the S3. Saying that S3 values do seem to be softening as do the Leons. My 8 month old Leon Cupra has lost £4.5k. Mine is of the original spec in Imperial Blue, Leather, ESP, Dipping Rear View, Rain Sensors. Bought for £15,750, now worth £11,250. Loss wise that pretty similar to an S3.
My take on it and only my opinion.
The Leon is without a doubt the best value for money hot hatch for us grown ups. Most people I see in Cupra's are in their 30's/40's & 50's showing that age shows you how to spend you money wisely. Does anyone young drive the Cupra ? coz I never see them.
Jonathan
Leon Cupra & 35 years old !!
I only said that the S3's rarely beat me, not that i can beat them!,
They can never pull away from me on a straight road:D ,
And as for the twin intercooler and larger turbo in the S3, it only seemed to produce more turbo lag, the larger turbo is needed for more power, but i think it would have benefitted from a single larger front mounted intercooler to reduce the distance the air travels before getting to the inlet manifold
Chins: does that mean I've the best of both worlds:D
Just ask Dave R and several at Buxton, it was very wet and the chipped A3 does keep up on standard wheels/brakes, I've now got bigger front brakes and 17' rims with sport tyres:)
Wet weather doesn't slow 2wd down as much as you think;)
Mosser
Std Leon vs Std S3 it would pull away. Tried it a few time to check the theory. Have you tried a modified S3. Its an awsome piece of kit. Capable of pretty much keeping up with STI/P1's. It will get to 100 in just over 12.5 secs. A modified Leon is around 16 secs.
The S3 is pretty good on the lag side. No quite as good as the Leon, but the Leon runs out of puff very early due to the small turbo.
Wando
Dont remember hearing of any modified S3 on your away day. Think you might of spured some into action :)

To be honest i aint to arsed about this Audi vs Seat thing, i enjoy my Leon Cupra and i appreciate the fact i saved money against an equivelent car whether that be a Ford, Vauxhall or Audi.
I like the Audi's a lot, my favourite car as a youngster was the Audi Quattro, the S3 is superb, but in my opinion the A3 is in need of a facelift, the new A4's are quite attractive the A3 is getting a little long in the tooth and is looking aged next to the competiton.
I know it wont be long though before it gets a revamp. S3 and Leon Cupra are a very much different kettle of fish, i think to compare these cars is wrong.
Not sure if there is anyone younger than me with a Leon Cupra, im sure there is. Im 28 now and was 27 when i bought the car last year.
So im still the right side of 30 just about ;)

I'm 21 and I'm picking up my Cupra in a couple of weeks or so. Yay! Insurance is a bummer though, but then that's true of any car at my age.
Maybe the S3's werent trying, but on the motorway when Following S3's i have accellerated to beyond 130 and they never get away!,
Also Chins, i have never come across a modified S3, but i can imagine having 250Bhp+ would be awesome!, and might be what i go for when this car dies (3 years to go!)

As I mentioned in another thread, goto Power Engineering on Saturday if your bored. There will be lots of modified TT's. Sure one of the guys would take you out. It would give you a good feel. They should have some 300bhp+ cars. I have been lucky enough to own an S3 at the same time as my current Leon, so know what the difference is like.
Maybe we need an S3/A3/Leon Dyno day ?
Jonathan
Yeah, that would be a good idea!, a joint session!, who is organising this dyno day on saturday and how do i contact them?, i would like to get in on the action and see what a proper dyno result is for my car, although i am about to go gas powered!, so my power will probably change again after that!(about 15Bhp more with 3rd gen stuff)

just read this from www.test.testcars.com/may-2000/4.html !!! :D
This flagship variant will eventually be available in four-wheel drive form but for the moment, British buyers have access only to a two-wheel drive version. Never mind, you still get the same 180bhp turbocharged 1.8-litre engine – the same as you'll find in the futuristic Audi TT sportscar. When the all-wheel drive option arrives, you'll essentially have a TT that can seat five people. For the time being, the Leon 20VT is the least expensive 180bhp five-door car you can buy – and it's extremely rapid (rest to sixty in 7.7s on the way to 139mph).
How many other family hatchbacks can offer up such a tempting mechanical recipe? And do so at such an affordable price (from just £15,995 in Sport form). Alternatively, there's a better-equipped Cupra version with leather trim and ESP electronic stability control for £18,995. In comparison for example, the identically powered (and driven) three-door Audi A3 1.8T quattro is £22,150 and isn't nearly as much fun to drive
Don't believe everything you read :D
Took my airbox and MAF sensor apart and the leon doesnt have any of these flaps inside that the S3 has Dean, instead it has a fine plastic square matrix with a stainless steel mesh behind it,
it is very free flowing to air and i dont think it needs any modifying to make it better, if you blow through the assembly onto the back of your hand it is like you havent even put it in the way!
