View Full Version : Ibiza TDI Sport - Chipping & MPG

Hi all
There seems to be a few people on here who've had the APR chip on the new Ibiza Sport TDi.
What sort of effect has it had on fuel economy ?
I have a 90-mile round trip each day to work, and I'd like the chip, but not if it drinks too much fuel.
I'm hoping that my MPG might actually increase; I do lots of cross-country A road driving and wonder whether the increased torque would mean I could travel everywhere in 6th, and save fuel....
I don't think I drive *quite* as fast as some on here do....mainly at the speed limit or slightly over.
Thoughts ?
Cheers
mb
In my personal experience if you are sticking to the limit then you should notice an improvement in consumption.
It does start to drink it when you really boot it though. I still haven't gone below 40mpg for my 50mile journey to work and I was not hanging around.

What's the best mpg you've averaged on a trip then ?
(With the APR chip...)
mb
71.4mpg 50miles coming home from work. I must admit I was trying hard to get good mileage.
I generally average about 58.7mpg which is still 4 or 5 mpg better than without the chip.
Its so hard not to boot it you can still feel the willingness to jump forward even in 6th @ 70 you just wanna go.
Make the pilgrimage
vist APR.
Lowest I have got over 110 mile single journey was 37mpg

Jeez... Who would ever believe a car with that sort of performance could ever return that sort of fuel economy ?
I'm sold !
All I need is the car now...
Thanks
Pug 206 GTI = 24mpg
Scooby = 20mpg
BMW = circa 20mpg
40mpg will do me, anything above that is a bonus! :D
You have to give it some on the motorway to get that low. Around town its not hard to get it down to 40mpg if you accelerate hard from every junction/ lights/ roundabout.

I was noticing in your sig that you've added Xenons to your import. Did you have any trouble getting them approved. I tried getting the factory to fit them to the R when it was being built but was told they are LHD only and can only be adjusted up and down and not left/right.
I was guessing that it was a load of tosh.

Correct. You do have to give it some on the motorway.
Max of 115mph, average shown on the computer about halfway was 89mph. Speed mostly 100mph+. On the autobahn obviously.
Mind you this week the car has not even warmed up when I get to work :D
Rage - is this "confirmed" mpg or taken directly from the trip computer?
I know some remaps mess up the computer calculations....

Well I wondered about that myself, whether you could get them "aligned" for UK use.
Someone else had also been told they couldn't have the winter pack on an import Ibiza.
So far I've had no feedback saying I can't have them, so fingers crossed !
I spoke to the dealer (Wim Pruys) yesterday, asking if he'd got an estimated build week yet.
Given that I only ordered it 2 or 3 weeks ago, I was a little taken aback when he said it was Wk51 - this week !!!!
However I don't believe this for a minute, it surely going to slip by a few weeks yet. His original estimate was 4 - 6 months (which gave me time to save up enough cash to pay the balance!).
Going back to mpg...
I currently drive a Rover 220 SDi (105bhp), and get around 50mpg.
If I can get more than that with a 180bhp APR'd Ibiza I'll be well chuffed. If the APR chip improves the mpg by 4 or 5, it'll pay for itself over a year or so, therefore making my justification easier !!!
mb
I must confess I can't be arsed to work it out and so my figures have all come off the computer.
I got my first (only) 600 mile tank after I had the chip done.
I haven't worked things out either, but here are the figures:
Cost to fill = £38 approx at 78.9p/litre = 48 litres approx
I can't remember the litres:gallons ratio but I think it's about 4.4 litres = 1 gal, so say 11 gallons
Usual mileage is 550 on that if the trip shows 47 or 48 mpg, and real figures would be 50mpg. That's 85-90 mph on the motorway if it's up to me and typical busy motorway speeds other times, with a little city driving thrown in.
Jason got the trip to show 27.9 on his test drive (19 miles).
I'd be surprised if they are right then mate.
Verifying is easy - just do full tank to full tank. Multiply litres put in by .22 to get gallons used. Divide mileage covered by no. of gallons used. Curse at fuel computer's optimism ;)
Based on litres * .22 I'm getting 52mpg; 'curse the trip computer's pessimism' then :D
I'm running 17's, but my GPS says 98.7 when my speedo says 100, so I think my mileage is realistic.
ouch thats expensive fuel.
78p thats criminal
know you drive alot so if you are around junction 11 of the M4 and need fuel there is a shell garage just off the slip road that has diesel for 72.4.

I buy as cheap as I can (but no supermarket), but I seem to find myself using motorway services a lot these days. Even 5p/litre more for a 48 litre fill is only £2.40, so it isn't worth the trek to search one out, but I have a few places I know about and I'll fill up early if I'm somewhere cheap and about to hit the motorway without enough to get to my destination. I rarely use the M4, but I'll bear it in mind.
'Ere up north we pay 71.9-72.9 at most pumps :D
I'm getting high 40's according to the trip but suspect by the miles covered it's in the low 40's, but then I only do 7 miles to work and 7 back so I think Iam doing quite well.

I was just as surprised as you M8!
To be fair, my computer is more pessimistic than Rage's it would seem. People with these engines in Golf's and even Passats reckon on high 40's to low 50's, however.
lol 27.5mpg was i giving it some?my ibiza does 30+and goes down to 25 or less when giving it pasty track days it just not worth looking at too scary,i understand it bills cupra goes down as far as 9 on the track:eek:
guy up the road had a 350 bhp scoob and his on a good day was 13 or so,deisel is deffo the way forward
You'd be going some to get 27.5 out of even a standard Scooby (or rather you wouldn't be going some).
Too right. In 28589 miles, I average 21mpg in my Scoob.
In Scotland during November last year I canned half a tank (60l) in 60 miles :D That was on the road too ;):D
a scooby holds 120 ltrs of fuel?
:p
Would be handy if it did. Avoid spending half your life on petrol forecourts.
911's have 95 litre tanks. I bought my first one in '94 and it cost £50 to fill it back then! That gave it a 400+ mile range though (and I never drove that car slowly).
hi there, i just got myself a pd100, does it have the same performance posibility as a pd130 (in chipped form)? thanks
I'm new to SEAT's and diesels, so I don't know what you can do to your engine, but if it's a PD, then I would have thought it can be improved significantly.
does that mean approximately 150 bhp posibility with reasonably the same sort or type of fuel consumption? since the pd100 does not have the same stability gadgets as the pd130 (tsp, esp!)will the chasis and gearbox be able to handle this power increase? thanks.
Upsolute do a 133bhp remap for the PD100.

From my (limited) understanding, the difference between the 100 and 130 TDI's is not just the different fuelling but also that the 130 has a higher compression ratio so methinks there are probably some uprated bits in the engine internals to handle the significantly higher torque output.
the 100 is not as strong the 115 and 130 are the same and 150 stronger still
i was getting 48-50 mpg on 90 mile trip to work after apr chip i now get 56-59 all motorway at 85+ and worked both out to be 1mpg off my computer reading

Do you think the improved mpg is because you've changed you driving style since the APR chip - ie you don't have to change down so often ?
could be a change in driving style never thought about that cos at speed it pulls well in 6th
