Leon heater/AC illumination

Hi everyone

I recently bought my 52-reg Leon TDI. When driving it in the dark for the first time, I noticed that the heater controls are not lit up in red, but the AC light on the AC button lights up yellow when it is switched on. All the other lights on the centre console/dash are lit up red as they are supposed to be, but the lower panel is not.
My dad has the same problem with his Audi A4 (P-reg).

Any suggestions? Is it a fuse/bulb issue?!

It could be one of two things... either the bulbs behind half failed, or the switch / dial itself that controls the illumination (on same unit as the headlamp controls). I've heard of that dial control failing before and stopping various parts of the dash from illuminating, so I'd guess that would be the problem to be honest.

If you bought it from a dealer, get it back down to them to check out. Otherwise, a trip to Seat might help diagnose the problem :)

Is there a (relatively) easy way to get the panel off to change the bulb? Don't think it's the illumination level dial that's duff but you never know! Again, is this easy to sort?

Have already tried walloping it to shake it into working!

I'm not 100% sure to be honest, as I've only played with the climate version in recent times. But I'd imagine if you remove the dash fascia (two screws under fascia by drop down tray) you'll be able to remove the entire unit with the dials on. From there you could check the illumination and if necessary change the bulbs.

I'm guessing though to be honest, so don't take any of that as gospel.

Cheers, I'll give that a try. I'm changing the CD changer and head unit over this weekend hopefully so may as well do that while I'm at it!

I had the same problem in my MX5 with exactly the same thing (heater controls).

Anyway, like someone said before, give it a thumb with your fist to see if that does the trick. If it lights up, your bulb is working but you may have a loose connection.

Believe it is the middle dial that removes (give it a small tug and should come out)

I had this on my first TDI S and was the bulb in the middle. Stealer only part though i'm afriad

I did try in Halfords but the bulb is a funny size and so they don't do it. I wrote the car off though before I ever ended up getting a new bulb for it!

That's quite an extreme cure for the problem! When people said 'give it a thump' I'm sure they didn't mean the entire car! ;)

to remove the bulb behind the heater controls, pull out the centre heater knob, it takes some finger grip tho, then get a pointed head plier and with gentle force get hold of the bulb and pull gentle... the bulb cost around 80p from dealers... i did this on my Leon... very simple to do..
