Has anyone ever been involved with a sucessful group buy?

Just wondered as loads of people go 'yeah' then it fizzles out.

I was part of a successful group buy about 4 years ago for a Psion palmtop...

It involved about 5 or 6 of us and we saved £100 each...

OK, let me change that to 'do they work'

see lots of 'lets do a group buy' here & on CGTi but haven't seen one work out.

I've never tried it for car related bits, but alwys willing to give it a go especially if it means I get something i want and it's cheaper than I could have got on my own. Only problem is everybody needs to have the cash ready to go on a given date. Unless there's regular 'progress reporting' or a publicised deadline it all goes t*ts up.

I've been part of several successful group buys, even managed to get my H&R coilovers for nearly 1/2 price. Typically though, many fizzle out as most people can't/won't put their money where their mouth is. It really is a thankless task organising them as you spend forever e-mailing suppliers and chasing people for the money, only for them to moan at you because the supplier can't deliver 1 millisecond after they've posted a cheque. It's not something you want to take on without the patience (and thick skin) of a saint!

as glenn has stated, it aint really worth it unless substantial savings can be made, id rather go out and buy summat at full price rather than relying on someone else + all the logistical aggro for a 10 - 15% discount

Missed out on that one :( Where did you get them from?

Afraid I can't say, one of the conditions of getting them so cheap - completely legitimate, not stolen or anything.

It wasn't a SEAT group buy, I just asked for Ibiza kit instead of a.n. other car.

I've been part of 2 successful group buys...

1 was for my VAG-Com on Audi-sport.net
the other was for my strut brace on SE...

I think they work OK on Scoobynet often enough. I didn't ever use them though.
