View Full Version : bit of a prob with flipper
my new pioneer HU has developed a bit of a flashing thing when the engine is running.the display flickers but if i turn the engine off its fine, checked the earth today and thats fine, could it be down to the fact i took them 2 resistors out?its a tad annoying and distracting when i'm driving so rather than turn the brightness to 0 i'd sooner sort it.any help ice dudes?

Could be to do with the bits you removed - no doubt they were there for a reason, we just couldn't think of one the other week :)
As an aside, car electrics are notorious for not providing a smooth supply - it's one reason why any serious ICE install will have a whopping great capacitor on the power feed. This does a couple of things, firstly it smoothes out the incoming supply, secondly it should ensure that any large bass transients don't draw the supply down too low. I've known a couple of cars with otherwise sensible installs that have failed in this aspect - dance choons, big bass note, amplifier takes all available current leaving no power left for your spark plugs. Oooops... As you know, no spark means no bang in the cylinder (unless it's a diesel), which means your engine don't run. It's kinda embarassing when a phat bass note makes your car stall. Especially as the sort of volume you'd be talking about for this to happen, you'd be attracting a bit of attention anyway...

probably pasty crumbs in the internals:(
Jase did you take a clean line off the battery?
These latest headunits, as G says, do require some power, its best to direct the line straight to the battery, with a good grade of copper wire and an inline fuse on it too.
If its been spliced into the power that came in for the previous factory stereo, you'll find that probably share other bits and bobs on the supply, and the stereo is probably not getting all the power it requires.
Only a guess going off what ive picked up from our Rick over the years, but whenever hes wired up my nee ICE, amps whatever, he takes a clean line direct from the battery.
I dont suppose this only happens when you have your headlights on does it? Just wondering as one of those components you removed(resistor/inductor) was in the illumination signal wire.

Does no harm to run a wire direct from the battery for the main power. As these new HU get more powerful the cars loom doesn't really cut it anymore...
If the resisters were used as a filter then chances are that could also be the cause. :(
Pete
think it may be when the lights are on as it was foggy when i 1st noticed it(lights were on)i'll check it out when i get chance, may order a new loom after chrimbo, they aren't that expensive and it'll be a neater job too:cheers: jason
Hmmm, maybe the fascia dims depending on the brightness of the dashboard lighting control? The brightness of my oem unit changed as I turned the dash lights up/down, but my alpine is either bright or dim (no in between). If this is the case, then the components you removed were almost certainly a filter to reduce flickering.
i have adjusted the brightness for when the lights are on and this works but the flickering is still there, gonna order a new loom tomorow it'll be in after chrimbo then:cheers:
deffo the lights ,tried it today, also the probs i had with the old unit turning itself off when it wanted ahve started on the pioneer,so conclude its the bloody loom in the car striaght line from the battery is my next option, see if that cures it
cheers merry christmas :(
Jase,
Don't tear the car apart yet! The Pioneer turned off twice with me, both times playing a CD. I think it is because the plug in the changer isn't tight enough because I gave it a wiggle and pushed it in further and it was OK again for ages.
cheers fen, jase is on the case:D
well 2 days with a new loom and all seems rosey, flashing illuimation now gone(that resistor was there for good reason)no more telephone muting, taped the new one up good and proper, taped in the power lead on the cd changer, but am gonna silicone it in when i get chance, its all going well(famous last words)only down side is i now have to pay fen for the changer;)
cheers for all the guidance ice dudes(specially kev)may tidy up the changer in the boot to make it look a bit more presentable, and so i can remove it when i go to b&q and throw some cement bags in the old girl:cheers:
MDF covered in smooth felt or carpet makes a nice tough surround and lid ?
specially if its 15mm thick ;)
more to remove on track days daz./.sorry bit of beef between keys:)
