View Full Version : ibiza k04...gt28rs soon to be (PICS)
right...so ive done k04...many told me i was wasting my time which made me even more determind, but i done it!
i got bored as i had nothing to do to my engine. I was quite happy with k04 power, but had no work to do to it so i decided to change!
gt28rs was what i wanted as theres not many ibizas with it.
i was thinking of just bolting it straight on when i get it but then i thought i need the gearbox out also to fit my diff and clutch, so i put 2 and 2 together and decided to take my engine out!
Ive never taken an engine out of a car before, 100s of bikes, but not a car!
i started on friday night at 9pm (dont ask) and worked untill midnight. Buy this time i had the front end off, most of the pipes and wires disconnected and it was just the engine mounts holding it in!
saturday night came after a mission of a day at work in the sun, and i finished it off and had the little beast out and on my bench before heading down the pub (see...i do have a life aswell as my car :p)
below is a few pics of it coming out and i will update it whan i can of the progress!
thanks for reading

Interesting. Looks to me like it would be possible to bung a K04 of a golf/leon style using the Ibiza style charge pipe and single pass FMIC. A few people have asked, that's all.
I take it you made/had made the dp yourself? I wonder if it's worth jigging the flange up now so you can make (or at least tack up) the GT28RS downpipe with the engine still out? Assuming you're making the GT28RS one too.
Edit: and assuming you are fiting a GT28RS and not an Eliminator...

nice one, look forward to the progress reports
its a proper gt28rs not a eliminator!
3" intake and the strange shape exhaust flange
as for DP its a JBS one

Looks like a good project, will keep an eye on this thread for updates. How long do you think it will take to be all up and running? And who are you using to sort the mapping for it out?

It was MRC mapped on the K04.
"How do u get the driveshafts out?" :p

nice mate, im not jealous one bit........
quick update...clutch and diff will be here very soon ive been told!
about to go and remove gearbox to fit clutch and send gearbox away with new diff for rebuild and have the lsd fitted!
HoocH
cool, just had mine rebuilt and had the diff fitted.
its so nice! with what i guess to be around 340+bhp now in first gear i can floor it in the dry and it grips! that is with goodyear F1 tyres.
round corners can be powered!
sweet! worth it then!?
ive been quoted to fit the diff, rebuild box, replace some seals and bearings (not sure what ones but he seemed to know) and change from rivets to bolts (common problem) £400
that sound good or bad?
got the box off yesterday! clutch has seen better days! was all the colours of the rainbow lol!
alot of wear where the thrust bearing rubs aswell (on the lever/spike/arm bits)
should be getting my engine mounts 2m
HoocH
400 sounds about right i think for rebuild and fitting the clutch.
just wondering how much room you have at the back of the block for the turbo from the brake lines?
im fitting clutch and delivering the box...they will have a standard box, rebuild it, fit diff, change rivits to bolts and i collect and fit clutch and box to engine, is that expensive then!?!?
as for room...have you ever seen how thick a rizla paper is?...about that much room lol
ok, are you sure that the exhaust housing will be to near the pipes and cause them to boil?
i havnt got the invoice on me so i cant tell you, but i didnt do any of the work as i dont have another car and i dont have a garage like you.
i did my turbo kit and intercooler myself and to be honist i dont think ill do it again, i get stressed to much and loose my temper.
if i had another car and a garage i can keep it in instead of my drive which both my mum and dad need then it would be great.
ive got a massive heat blanket to help and its all going to be wrapped! just have to see! if it causes a problem i will run the lines in the small compartment between the windscreen and engine bay!
do you know what power you have?
your mate in the us takes the biscuit...i ordered loads of bits from him when you gave me contact details and they were sent yesterday!!!
diffs were aparently out of stock!?
hmm, it also took a while for my stuff to come through. thats the thing about cars things no matter what always take time!
i would guess around 340bhp and around the same for torque
got the engine mounts (i went for road rear and gearbox with race front) and cambelt part (belt, tensioner, water pump and damper)
see pics

plastic impellor water pump?
Apparently the 'new' plastic impellor water pump is made from a different plastic so won't have the same problems as the old ones. However they recommend a change every 60k. I didnt want to risk it so sourced a metal one!
as pj1985 says...they are a new updated water pump, has been designed with the known problem of them breaking in mind!
im my mind a updated/improved genuine one is better than a pattern one!
its a weird plastic (feels and sounds like metal)

lol - good luck!
Metal Impellor on mine.
Oct 2005 - 8000rpm race motor..... would use mine over any plastic rubbish any day of the week, let alone on the promise as lame as they've told you.
:hide:
The advisory change every 60k was what got me. If its as good/better than the metal one which is what they were trying to tell me then why would that be needed especially when the cambelt is only inspect every 60-70k and to change water pump the cambelt has to come off.

There is nothing wrong with the new breed of water pumps. Its only the old one which were shit and fragment.

bill i wasnt saying that there was a problem with the metal ones just that i was opting for the new plastic one! engine will be out again in about 8months so if need be i can change it then! (not that you need the engine out)

look at the top of the mani, does it say atp on it? i thought jbs only sell the tube manis now? and they stopped using the atp ones due to common problems with them cracking?!
i think jbs have ground off the atp marking as there is grind marks!
im book in for a cusom made equal length for september anyway

Looking quality bud
just looking at the oil return line from the turbo, i would strongly advise you to twist it 180* so it is facing down.
Remember the oil RETURN line is a gravity feed return. There's nothing forcing it to return to the oil pan. If you have any type of restriction in there and the oil can't flow freely out of the CHRA then you're going to have pressure build up.
hope that helps mate :D
thanks for comments guys! im really wonna get it back to gether now but im wait for new seats etc so there is no rush on the engine as i cant drive it with out my seats!
when i started tis is was a little different...now about 427 other members are goin similar or same BT so im now looking for my next project! lol i need it to be different lol
as for part numbers i will try but my memery is totaly crap, text me in at lunch time (number will be pm'd)
myk3, oil return.... do you say that because it needs to be gravity fed back? and having to travel upward it wont make it!? thanks for that also ;)
i painted my 'S' badge to see how the new colour looks as im having my wheels, roof, strut braces, TIP, and rocker cover done in it! (didnt copy pete on idea...just unfortunate with have both done it!)
will get pics up later!
almost finished with the porsche brake set up also! just rubbing them down to be painted red to match rears then i can fit them! custom discs look great
pics will follow soon of painted bits and brakes!

also thinking of porsche rar calipers to match with big discs...if anyone has an idea on how to work the handbrake with them with out running 2 calipers (like an aston) please let me know!

rar= rear lol (cant edit)
myk3, oil return.... do you say that because it needs to be gravity fed back? and having to travel upward it wont make it!? thanks for that also ;)
yes, if it is facing up oil will build and clog it, you will prob blow your seals and blow some nice blue smoke out ya arse.
any way i went to the stealers again today and they have sent the same bloody shifter cable bracket again! and they wont order any others in as they dont want to waste money each time! piss takers!
hooch please can you remove that bracket you got on your gearbox which the shifter cables go in to, look at the bottom and please post the part number. also could you get a few pics for me so i can also send this to the dealers so this time they get the right fooking one!!!!!!!![:@][:@]
would be very helpful if you could!

thanks for comments guys
i was worred the colour was gonna be too much and too in ya face!
but i love the way it just looks kinda grey in normal lite!
as you can see i need to do the in-fills for the roof but the worst of its done!

Blimey, after 7 pages i've only just found this thread.
Some cracking work you've got there Hooch, keep the photos coming.
The likes of you, Matt, Pete, and Craig who have all done / doing their BT conversions are saving me from the day-to-day boredom of work and providing some excellent reading.
Another one i'll have to bookmark and keep an eye on.
If only i had the time and money to do it? ;)
Good work mate.

na that looks spot on hooch congrats on making it look well mate dont fancy spraying my car do you ?? lol
yea....uncrewed it and ran lol
I unscrewed one side of the condensor and it let off some gas then I unscrewed the otherside which connects onto to the dryer (cylinder shape) and gas and orange fluid started to come out?
What is this fluid?
Cheers
Scotty_b
27-06-2007, 18:43
Its not crack detection fluid is it? Mine had it put in so if it leaks you can see where its come from
yea thats it, sumtimes green!
mine had none! so it wasnt too messy! just very cold as my poor hand found out!!
HoocH
It started to boil on my drive
Took like 10min to drain the passenger side flange and bout 30mins for the dryer side.
Thought it was meant to be quick!
mine was pretty quick...5mins!
put my hand in the fumes.....proper cold!
HoocH
got my subframe back from powder coaters! had it sand blasted then coated looks like new! also had my wishbones done...going to send them to have them rose-jointed now!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v730/benellik2/SP_A0047.jpg
hoping to change subframe 2d!
also put poly bushes in the front engine cradle! (thanks to craig! for the advise)
HoocH
forgot to ad i also changed the top mount and bearing etc along with a master cylinder (dont know why)
clutch master cylinder not brake master cylinder
got the subframe in along with the powerflex front engine cradle bar bushes
engine has now been moved to a different garage, just got to sort out the DP now then im putting the engine back in
im tempted to try and get the engine back in before i get the DP but i know it will be alot easier with the engine out as its really hard to gain access to fit the DP (see previous pics to see how DP sits)
even when i get the DP back i still need to send it off for ceramic coating!!

something of that sort bill yea. not much on it tho just a smear

the worry about using exhaust sealer paste on that sort of joint is if it cracks and falls out = blowing
it was a real good seal with out anything (i put a torch inside the mani)
so the paste is just so the is something there, with out it i guess it would just leak when cold then seal up...time will tell

iv seen craigs pro alloy/jabba cooler, and from the look of it the pipework is the same as mine but in silicone instead of alloy (he has the smaller pro alloy cooler), not too sure if you have the HUGE cooler or the smaller one , but the smaller ones pipework has a 135degree bend iirc coming off the cooler, small straight to take it underneath the subframe then another bend up towards the throttle body then a small one to actually attach to throttle body. (not too sure on measurements)
Hope this helps

how do i set up the gear cables people?
connect up, adjust until they feel right....
do one at a time, back & forth, then side to side
also if tomorra goes aswell as today then i think it will be running!
cant select any gears at mo tho!? how do i set up the gear cables people?
thank you please
Push the gearbox shifter by hand as far as it will go anticlockwise (assume fourth) then put the cable end on to suit.
Work the up/down shifter to the middle by hand (neutral) then put the cable end on to suit.
Then adjust slightly as needed. Remember it's all mirror image, because the gearstick base turns it all the 'wrong' way.
thanks for the info people

Awesome mate.
I have just noticed i cant see the intercooler brackets, nice one.
No point in driving it in the rain as it wont grip very well. lol
Great news Hooch! Well done.
Lumpy running down to a slight air leak somewhere?
it was more of a misfire rather than an airleak, maybe just a coil gone (revs ok tho!?)
right....hasnt been the greatest of afternoons, there again, not the worst either
fitted passenger side driveshaft and all was good! tryed to put driver side in and it was hitting the oil return line:headhurt:
so i had to remove the DP to gain access to remove the oil line and im getting it modded tomorrow so it should sit alot nicer (wasnt really happy where it was anyway)
in its current state it has the driveshafts in and most things ready
just needs the oil line re-fitting and the DP bolting back on
ive also got the bumper fitting nicely (lil bit of cutting)
so im hoping to have it drivable this week.....one problem tho!!
my seats are sold and are being collected tomorrow nite :doh:lol which means once its ready to drive i cant as i wont have any seats :shrug:
im pretty happy with the progress this weekend and very happy to of heard it running(didnt have an engine in 8days ago)

I've got 4mm between my driveshaft and the oil line. :scary: I couldn't see how to alter it unless I got a new bend made up. I'd be really interested to see how you've done it.
mine sits tolaly different to yours mate
at the mo its a braided length end to end with a 90degree bend on both ends
im just having it cut down and re-crimped with one end as a stright connector rather than an elbow
see previous pics with engine on bench
if yours is 18mm steel (standard VAG oil pipe) i have the proper pipe bender for it!
my k04 used to sit really close
HoocH
No, my standard Vag one is a 90 degree stainless steel elbow on the turbo, 90 degee steel elbow on the sump with a fat flexi braided line in between. Nothing to bend
But, hey yes - I see the difference, your turbo sits way higher than mine.
This tread is making me want to do mine rather than go to Vagtech...
don't know if i could have the patinence for such a job..
lookig forward to seeing many pics of the finished project.. :D

wot you mean wot sort of bender? an 18mm rothenberger robend bender lol
Wild Willy - Yep, looks like an exhaust valve on cylinder 3 has dropped, yet to inspect just bought a Golf largeport AGU engine which I'll build up with rods, pistons, valves. Will more than likely end up with a large intake manifold and a new turbo too, as the chances are the valve will have proceeded out the engine and straight into the turbo.
Hooch - It's a right bitch isnt it, it does get slightly better and you do get used to it.
craig you must be gutted!! not having much luck!
