recently I enquired about a carbon exhaust with a company called 888 carbon. They are not making the exhausts due to material failiure at high tempreatures. But i got talking to the manager of the company and he basically said he can fabricate any part (within reason). He said he could make carbon bonnets that look fantastic 4 around about £300 obviously mor people that are interested the cheaper the price.Im goning to get one but if anybody else is interested let me know, perhaps we could get a bigger discount?

As stated on another thread this week - the biggest cost of bodywork is the labour involved in making the moulds. £300 for a one off sounds VERY CHEAP. I'm guessing that what they're talking about here is taking a mould from a regular steel bonnet and mould the carbon ones from that? BTW - which model do you have?

a while back essex racing quoted me 350 to make a skin to fit mine,so i suspect they would have used the OE bonnet as a mould

Hi

I would be interested in a carbon bonnet but mines a Mk2-type - also only if its really a carbon bonnet and not just a thin layer of carbon to stick on the top.

Who did you speak to at Essex Racing Jase ?

Cheers

Rob

These bonnets that we were talking about were full carbon not just a skin. They make carbon bonnets for the US market at the minute but are based in the uk.The bonnets look great with high gloss finsh they are going to take a mould from my 2002 ibiza cupra but if people are interested for their mk2 let me know.Again if we can get enough interest in both bonnets there are savings to be made

Mk3 for me. Can they be sprayed to match the car with a decent bonding paint?

What about panel deflection at higher speeds?

Do they secure in the same way as the OEM one or is it a bonnet pin jobbie?

Cheers

Rob,think from the add they were mostly eating pop tarts, shit sorry, mostly doing skins to fit over the bonnet, but nothing to stop em doing the same and then you bolting it to the car,if they have the facilities,i know for a fact its was deffo carbon ,not stick on plaster type stuff;)

So it's a skin to go over the bonnet?

Dormouse

Does this carbon bonnet just replace the metal skin or can you just unbolt the metal one and bolt the carbon in it's place.

My guess would be you need another set of reinforcing bars for a quick swop.

Sorry to put a dampner on all this but what are the consequences of a carbon fibre bonnet disintegrating in a crash?

1. it's not a crumple zone design feature...thus insurance issue.
2. CF turns into a nasty mess of shards and fibres when it destructs. This is acceptable on racetracks where the cars have been designed with CF in mind and Marshalls can clean up (whilst wearing suitable apparel). however on thne road? dodgy I recon. I still have a small bit in my hand from GT racing marshalling the damn stuff seems to work it's way in.
3. When it's cold like recently it's even worse due to brittleness.

There were four sets of Carbon Fibre bodywork made up for Westfield SEi's though - two of which have been written off, a mate of mine drives one and the other is hanging in someone elses' garage waiting for the rest of the car to be built. Westfield got a bit touchy about the whole business and threats of legal action were made before more sets of bodywork were manufactured...

Westfield FW400 was all carbon perhaps ? - there are loads of people driving around the USA with carbon bonnets on, seems to be the current in thing, - if it was a real issue I suspect they wouldn't be doing so knowing how the yanks like to sue each other.

Either that Rob or the legislators haven't realised what going on yet.

Either way, there's a few consideration to be made. The biggest one i guess is going to be is it really neccesary on a car used primariliy for the road? OK its' lighter, but that not much use if you are stuck behind Thora Hird in her brown mini-metro.

In my case its not for a car used primarily for the road. As far as Thora is concerned, pass her dear Dormouse, dear Dormouse, dear Dormouse, pass her dear Dormouse, dear Dormouse, pass her (to the tune of 'I've a hole in my pocket')
