My '97 1.4 Ibiza project car is more or less complete, but Ive always wondered if it would be possible to convert the rear drum brakes to disks, and upgrade the front disks to vented disks.

i think it would be easy enough to find TDi front vented brakes and swap them onto my car, but the problem lies with the rear.. I have searched Ireland and mainland UK, and I cant for the life of me find any rear brake assemblies from the 96-99 Ibiza GTi/Cupra.

Anyone any other ideas how i could do it?? Any golfs/polos share the same rear disk brakes, that I might have more of a chance finding from a breakers yard?

Also, does anyone know how I could make sure there was the correct bias, so that the rear disks didnt lock up too easily and so the front/rear brakes are correctly balanced?

Any help wud be mucho appreciated

Why don't you get the rear off a 110hp tdi as well. They have rear discs as well.

Rear Disc conversion for what it is worth is pointless, you dont gain much breaking ability, the only advantage you do gain is that rear disc's are better for controlling a car, when breaking under pressure.

I have had my rear drums converted to disc's and upgraded front discs to 288mm drilled discs.

good luck - the 110 was only available on the continent - plus rear beams aint going to be that cheap - especially as they're the same - only the stub's are different

I know that the rear disc brakes and stubs / hubs from a Golf Mk3 bolt straight on to a '97 rear beam, but then you end up requiring 5 stud rear wheels - but as back of Mk3 golf is same as mr2 but with the addition of an extra wheel bolt, there is no reason as far as i am aware that mk2 Golf Gti disc / calipers would not just bolt straight on, especially as caliper lugs are on the stubs not the beam.

As for the advantages of discs over drums, mostly it shortens pedal travel and requires less adjustment than drums, but actually they are not as powerful, (crappy handbrake!) and in the golfs case can suffer from seized rear calipers.

If you get the whole set off say a 110tdi then it's worth fitting, just look out for the brake force limiting valves in the rear brake lines, or mounted on the underfloor and attached to the rear beam in the golfs case.

You've overlooked one small point:p The hub bit that the wheel bolts onto is and intgral part of the disc so all you would need to do is buy discs for a gti/cupra which will be 4 stud pattern, if you got the bits of a mk3 golf (as I did;) )

either way will work:)

LOL

ok it sounds like a lotta work and since funds are tight at the moment i think ill put the job off as itd be too much cash/hassle for the subtle improvement in looks! lol

mind u if i see a cupra in the breakers then i may just b tempted....;)

Quick question - 280 mm on rear with 305 Brembo's Up front.

Will it work or is that too much breaking force on the rear.

lot of work to get the 280s on the rear, custom hub flanges (your original hub/discs extensively machined, different hand brake calipers to accomadate the wider disc and a spacer bracket

Cheers,
I'll stick with the solid disk then - money can go elsewhere.... ;)

Surprised no-one else has commented on this but... TDi uses 256mm discs with Girling calipers at the front (as does 8v GTi/Cupra Sport). Your 1.4 will be running 239mm discs with Kesley/Hayes calipers. To convert to 256's you'd need to change the bubs, hub carriers, calipers, etc... It's all quite a lot of work. However, if you want to improve the braking up front, there's all sorts of uprated discs and pads available for mk1 and mk2 Golfs went bigger and other family members (Jetta, Scirocco, etc...). Mk1 Golf GTi used 239x20 vented discs as standard as did mk2 Golf GTi 8v and early spec mk2 Golf 16v. You could source some grooved and/or cross drilled items and run them with a decent Fast Road pad (e.g. Pagid FR)...
