Its a 1994 Ibiza 1.9Dcl.

On Sunday I had some work done by a friend of the family. He replaced the cambelt and changed the glow plugs.

Today was the first time I've driven the car since. It has developed the following faults:

Smokes badly at idle and when first started a puff of smoke comes out.

Very lumpy tickover (esp when cold) - basically chugs!

I opened up the bonnet to have a look at lunchtime. It looks like 2 of the injectors are leaking fuel.
There also seems to be something missing from on top of the gearbox (plug or something). There is a large (4cm) screw hole that I'd never noticed before. I'm sure its not just me being daft, because the thread is shiny (only thing in the engine bay that is!) and I can see inside.

Just thought I'd see if you guys had any ideas as to what it is before I confront the fella about it. I can see how he could have maybe messed up the injectors when he did the glowplugs, but would that really explain all the smoke from the exhaust? I've never seen the car smoke so bad. It smokes more at idle now then it used to on full throttle!

Not familiar with the unit, but.......

Easy enough to tighten injector unions, but wouldn't think that would cause your smoking.

More likely the timing is out (assuming your car has mechanical fuel pump ~ driven by timing belt). Possible it's "a tooth" out of alignment....which you should be able to correct.

Hole in box (?) No idea.

Not knowing the engine of by heart, but ive got some pretty edcuated guesses

1st off its not uncommon for diesels to puff out smoke when starting from cold, but as you say it smokes contiuosly theres ovibiously summat wrong.

injectors leaking fuel would also explain the rough and smokey idle and the mechanic would of most likely had to disconnect the injector pipes to get at the glow plugs, pipes leaking fuel is the petrol equivelant of a dodgy HT lead

4cm plug missing from the gearbox?, Id say he has removed it to look at the timeing marks on the flywheel to do the cambelt, its possible he has incorrectly fitted the cambelt by not locking the the engine up with special pins and or has incorectly tensioned the belt itself becuase some deisel engines have some thorough procedures to correctly tension the belt

hope this is of some help:cheers:

Yeah, cheers Stu.

I had pretty much the same response from the carcareclinic. They said he had left the plug from looking at the timing wheel as well.

The fella actually popped round my house last night to have a look. He pushed against the flexible injector pipe and it started squirting fuel! He's gunna replace that tonight for me.

He listened to the engine and said it sounded like the timing was slightly out. He's gunna try and sort it out tonight.

I forgot to mention the plug, but I'll make sure he looks at it.

Cheers for the advice fella's.
