They're having a larf aren't they! The renewal notice came in yesterday at a...

...wait for it...

£699

Excuse me whilst I wrestle with mi bank manager! For Christ sake, the car's an 1997R, group 14, Thatcham Cat1, and I've got 7 years no claims. They'll be wanting blood next.

I have to admit one downfall. I made a claim back in Nov 2001. It's the ******* that hit me when he was p1ss3d in a metro, and I was inside 'aving mi dinner. Well they caught him, prosecuted him, but get this: it's a fault claim coz the peenarse hasn't got any chuffin' money, so Admiral couldn't squeeze the money out of the prat.

I ain't got hundreds sitting in the bank waiting for a some t**t to bump up my premiums coz he fancies stealing a car and whacking into mine, or I'd be driving a Leon Curpa by now. So I'm pleading wi' ya; reply with names and numbers of decent insurance companies that you've had joy with, and in return, I'll get Claire to show you lot her sexy ar53! (Only kidding Hon! OUCH!)

Try www.elephant.co.uk its the internet arm of Admiral so its the same company but in my personal experience always over £100 cheaper than going direct with Admiral.

That's a bummer! I'm with Admiral, and as you know drive basically the same car as you. I have a clean 5 year accident history and no claims but am under 25. My premium last year was circa £700. I hope my renewal doesn't go up. I was hoping it would be near the £600 mark or less (pigs might fly you know).

PLease note that I have no alterior motives (as per your last paragraph)..

before I got my motor insured with greenlight I searched for ages to find the lowest price.

If you're paying in one lump sum the best place i found was ELEPHANT (http://www.elephant.co.uk)

It beat everybody else by miles. (I cant think of any others which came close so that stuck in my mind).

Do you get the discount with greenlight or is it something I heard that it was only Cupra's that got the discount? (not sure).

Hope this helps and is a start.

Only SEATs since the discount is with SEATCupra.net.

That would explain my hesitancy in my above post.. as i was not exactly sure.:)
Anyway, to continue... greenlight gave me an equally appealing quote to 'Elephant' but let me pay over 4 months (which helped at the time with chrismas looming).

Greenlight couldnt get within £200 of my elephant quote so I guess it depends on the person and where you live.

Try getting quotes with missus/girlfriend/mother/father as a named driver, this often reduces the premium by loads!

:dunno:

or *old people* if like me you are under 25, but especially if you are even younger. Get a quote with you mother on your policy too, or any old relative who has a clean licence.

They're less of a risk (if you are one) and the policy assumes that if they are driving you can't be, so less risk.

I'm sure a non Cupra owner mentioned a while back that the discount was only for Cupra models.

I have just used these guys -> Confused.Com (http://www.confused.com/)

They do all the leg work and got me a superb deal on my Saab 9-3 (currently my company car but I'm buying it on 10 Feb due to my impending redundancy).

OK I'm 39 but due to company cars I have 0 NCB and I have an SP50 yet I have ended up with a policy from Norwich Union that covers both private and business mileage for £560 :D much better than the quotes of £800 to a £1000 that I started to get.

Thanks very much for that. Doesn't hurt to give Greenlight a buzz anyhow, but I'll certainly give the elephant a trunking, er, I mean a try.

Sorry for the pityful, awful, infact downright degrading for elephants joke!

Nice redundancy package if you can buy the Saab with it and run your other 2 cars ;) Of course shame about the redundancy :(

Thanks for the thought EDC. Unfortunately I'll only have the two cars, the Cupra and my current Saab 9-3 SE 2.0T which luckily I'm getting for a bargain - 3 years old, 48k miles, 1 year MOT and 1 year warranty for a shade over £8k.

I did consider buying the new Aero from the dealer but have been put off by the depreciation. Just thinking that my current Saab has gone from £23k 3 years ago to £9.5k on the open market puts me off shelling out a lot of cash for a new one.

As for the redundancy well I am far luckier than many people with the package I have got so I will count my blessings and not complain - just watch me bounce back! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

How much of an increase is it lobbing the business use on your insurance? I don't have that on mine. I slaughter the company cars for business trips. hehehaha! :D

Year on year, the quote has increased by 9%. I don't know if that's good or bad because insurance companies have threatened and executed increases on all premiums for quite a while. I've heard some people say more like 25%. Maybe I am lucky, but I've got nothing else to compare with. I guess if people stopped claiming for just about anything on their insurance (which mostly applies to house/contents insurance I know), then our premiums would probably fall.

Anyways, just to let you know, the story so far is Tesco is £20 cheaper, but I've got a lot of phoning around to do yet. I'll keep you posted.

I'm with NU Direct paying £380 fully comp with full protected NCB for my beezer cupra. Others were at least £450+ or had big XSs. My XS is only £120. That's only for 6K miles/year, but when I dropped it last year it only made about £30 difference.

I was with Admiral, but when I wanted to change my insurance to TPFT from Fully Comp for my Leon 20VT as I'm going away for two months. They said that they will cancel my insurance as I'm not in the country for a long time !!!!!! I need a laid-up insurance they said !!!!

So I rang around, Endsleigh quoted me £1300 to begin with, put the girlfriend on it (she has a commenwealth driving licence) and it drops to £ 998  (Haven't told her yet, and shes staying in the UK whilst I'm away.....ssshhhhh  )

Then to throw another spanner in the works, my home contents inurance company at one point said I wasn't covered as I was away for two months, despite me saying that the flat will be occupied for that time, tough her name is not on the policy they said......

So far I have gathered, as long as you stay in your home whilst being burgled, don't goto the local shops except on a Tuesday, only goto to a large shop more then 5 miles from your house but less then 29.5 miles away (Only on Monday and Thursday) you're covered......

Still awaiting the travel insurance quotes :(

AARRRRGGHHHHHHHH Insurance companies, I hate them

Yeah, and if it wasn't for burglers, you wouldn't need to have theft cover on your contents insurance. Great isn't it! Strangle the lot of 'em.

I live in Northern Ireland, im 25, drive a standard Leon TDI, have 6 years NCB and the cheapest quote i got this year was just over £1000!!! :( (that was from Admiral strangely and Elephant was actually dearer for some reason???)

Just out of interest i phoned up about a cupra at the same time and i was getting quotes of around £2k!! I dread to think what an R would be.

markmck just out of interest who did you get insured with for under 500 notes??

Results from the Survey

Here are the bids from insurance companies, the greedy little buggers looking to rob from the poor and give to assylum seekers! Sorry, getting carried away from all this questioning (do you have a full UK license, have you lived in the UK all your life: YES!).

My renewal (from Admiral) was £699.30, which incidentally you need to look at closely because it's not the large figure that's on the front page of the notice. Goes without saying I guess, check the small print coz that's what really matters. Good job I've just had my eyes tested! :D

Right...

Admiral £633.36 (best they could offer after phoning them last!)
esure £745.26
AA £729.02
egg £756
Direct Choice £610.55 (Really good analyst I talked to)
Tesco £680.40 (followed closely by a letter re-quoting for £796!)
elephant £708.75 (as others found, more expensive than parent company)
Norwich Union Direct £643.96
Hill House Hammond £818 (Why do I bother!)
Priviledge £781 (they need the revenue for all their adverts on Sky!)
Greenlight £564

So it looks like Greenlight are going to get it, being they're the cheapest by far, a long way! They said they'd treat my claim as non-fault as I did claim on my own insurance but wasn't even near the car when matey decided to rearrange a Metro, using the impact into my car. Now that's considerate!

Whoever's put their ad on the site, cheers! You've saved me some dough. Less debt to load my credit card with! ;)

Insurance Warning

I've had a look at the paperwork that Greenlight has sent me. Although I asked them during the quotation if Legal Expenses Cover was included, and they said yes, apparently not according to the paperwork.

I've written to them about this expecting an explanation. They also said they cover for uninsured loss for a small fee, but didn't give any clue as to what the fee was. I also asked for further details about this.

Basically, it's pointless having fully comprehensive insurance unless you receive the level of cover you require. I believe in today's climate, uninsured loss should be compulsary. After all, the t**t that hit my car was under age, drunk in charge of a stolen car, no tax, no insurance, and if I hadn't had relevant cover... Well, you get the picture.

So dig out your policies and make sure you have got the level of cover you think you have, or ask your insurance company, and get them to confirm in writing. They are obliged to do this. This is for your own protection should the uneventful happen.

I've got another letter from Greenlight this morning...

They've chucked in the legal protection/uninsured loss for free. The tone of the letter was very formal, and they've warned me that they'll be checking my posts for libel! So it's a good idea we don't go slagging insurance companies off too much eh! :D

Anyways, it's a one up for Greenlight as they've come through for me this time. I suspect that should I stay with them next year, I'll have to inject the extra cash.
