View Full Version : REVO SoftwareTuning via OBD2 Cable

Since the REVOlutionary way of serial programming the ECU of the car via OBD2 is now a fact, shouldn't it be easier for REVO to distribute the required software on their site as a download, for users that already have an OBD2 cable?
If the cable that they use is the standard OBD2 cable which connects to the OBD2 port via RS-232, then the 2 hours time limit demo could be distributed via their site, in order to let car owners evaluate it and you if they want to make it permanent on their car, they can pay for it and of course they can buy SPS1,SPS2,SPS3 via REVO company or dealers network.
Does anyone has any info on this? Revo?

Nice idea but surely there ar etoo many security problems, and what if it doesn't operate properly - who do you turn too ?
it is being discussed here

Copyright? Somebody might steal/crack their code and screw their business over?
mmmmm
reverse software engineering.
nice
I *think* that you can't use a standard OBD2 cable. If you look at the connector in the car, it has more pins connected than an OBD2. I assume that these other pins are probably what REVO are using somehow.

I don't think that someone would think or try to reverse engineer a software that can make his ECU useless if it's been used the wrong way. We are talking about our cars not our PCs.
APR states on the http://www.apreurope.com/support/chip_tuning_faqs.html (website) that "...we have completely reverse-engineered the entire Bosch Motronic system..." I don't take it,the wrong way as a statement of reverse engineering.
Anyway, I thought it would be great as an idea if we had the opportunity to try it on our cars, without having to visit our local dealers. If security is the only issue then i guess that we have to pay a visit to our APR vendors again for REVO!!!
I would guess it's not joe public that they're wary of.

It is not "just" an OBDII cable guys. Its REVO's OBDII cable and its clever :D

Pugster,
The connector in our cars as with all other modern cars IS an OBDII connector, otherwise known as a J1962 connector.
Unfortunately, the serial programming is not just as simple as plugging in an OBDII connector and downloading software. The cable will need some form of voltage regulating for a start, to convert the OBDII comms signal levels (switched +12v via K-line), to standard serial comms levels. Also the encyption that Bosch spent alot of time coding, needs to be reverse engineered :) and probably uses a form of hardware as well as software to do this (at a guess).
The REVO development is very advanced and clever. Lets hope their own encryption keeps prying eyes away ;)
Cheers

For sure, I am using a DUAL K-Lines cable (200 Euros a piece) just to plug VAG-COM in my car, months ago. As far as I know A USB to OBDII cable is coming our way also. Serial programming on ECU via OBD2 was a topic on VAG-COM forums long before REVO announced their program thought. Just wanted to make sure they are using something more than an advanced K1-K2 professional cable for this job.
Fortunately as far as I saw from Bill's post its more than that...
Thanks
