View Full Version : Tow Bar
So....
would you have major worries about a cordie that has had a tow bar on it?
2.0 16v that is...
or any engine..
Cheers
Mark
Whats it been pulling ?
My wife had a towbar on her car, but shes never used it as she got it from her Dad!

IMO not so much worry about the engine (if driven correctly) but more so the strain put on the drive-train/rear-suspension and the chassis which cannot be avoided.
I'm sure that my luggage trailer (albeit a big bugger) shagged my Bammer's drive-shafts and diff/gearbox.
A caravan/boat??????

its a 2.0 16v mark, its not a 1.0 puddlejumper!! id take it off tho as they look silly unless you really really need it.
just think of all that 16v powerrrrrrr !!!
broom broom, tho you realise you would have to spray it to another colour!! :D

When I bought mine it had a tow bar fitted... I wasn't worried about it really as the car seemed well looked after and purred nicely...
What you looking at then? not R147CVV????
Pete
No Pete, not R
It's an ex demo'd V plater - the previous (and only private owner) had a tow bar removed shortly before chopping it in.
So I don't know what it towed unfortunatly, or how often etc.
If we were to assume it was Rear suspension that could be damaged, that's an easy swap (assuming warantee didn't cover it)
still hmmming

take it out for some town and back road driving, if its bumpy talk the price down a few quid and use that money for eibachs!! standard cordy suspension is quite high so id be surprised if there was anything to worry about.
already bumped the price down on principle of me not PX'ing, but it was more to let myself know that 2.0 16v's aren't the gutless beasts I remember..
but a cordie SX is what I will be buying now. the boot sold it to me
and the toys
and the fact that they're like 1/3 of the price after 3 years (damn glad I never bought one!)
MArk
you liked it then cock?
any more V platers going around?price seems cheaper than the ibiza,is there any more room it the back than the ibiza,or is it all just boot space?what colour is it mark?
more room in the rear - by about 2 inchs from memory (though not much if you're behind me)
there are a few about mate - this one was black

How much Mark?
Pete
Sticker price was 5250 (and that's a dear one)
I know it's not the same thing, but I stick a lot of heavy gear in the boot of mine (all my bass stuff bar the guitar). That's got to be about 50/60 kilos subject to the rear wheels on top of the norm. You most definitetly notice the arse ground clearance reduced!
When the boot's emptied, the springs don't raise the arse much, but after a short while of driving it's recovered. There's certainly no long term effects of the extra weight, and it's been carrying bass stuff for nearly two years.
The other thing is, there's plenty of Golf TDi's with Tow Bars, and my mate's old (and now deceased) '86 MkII Golf CL 1600 didn't have any problems after pulling caravans and trailers. As long as the Tow Bar installation was good, and it's been taken off safely and any bare metals sorted, I don't see any reason why this should be a consideration, subject to a test drive of course.
I take it the lumps going to be the same as our 2.0 16 valvers. If you could get the car for under £5K, and it's got all the toys, that's a serious amount of car for your money. And Cordys look dead smart in black (Brendy knows!) although you know what that means in the summer and when the weather turns shitey (like it is now).
If it's got air-con, jump on it Mark! Go on. You know you want to. You luv it really, don't you. One car on a weight loss program, the other not with a boot to match!
