View Full Version : Rolling Road Action Question

This is an open question to everyone on this BB who would like to put their car on the rollers to see what power figures their engines produce.
I am particularly interested in getting a number of different 1.8T VAG cars with various mods from various tuners and put them to the definative test.
The venue would potentially be in Cheltenham at a RR which can accomodate 4WD also.
For 1.8T comparisons across the range it would want Audi's, VW's, Seat's, Skoda's, with standard ones, and chipped/modified ones from various tuners such as:-
MTM, ABT, ATP, RSD, AmD, Jabbasport, Upsolute etc etc etc...
For a gathering like this, I am sure there would be magazine interest and features.
To help me guage the interest in this, could I ask fro a straw poll on how many of you, and what cars, would be interested in attending such an event. (multi VAG event)
If you could indicate on the poll what you have if interested in a dyno session that would be great.
Many thanks
Bill
count me in.
need to know why i am so fast.
Bill,
Good idea...
I'd be interested, but since my car is almost exactly the same as yours there probably isn't any point (ie. Ibiza 1.8T RSD 210, Yellow, PPS9s etc)
I too would be interested to see how the others compare... especially 1.8T Ibizas with a K04 upgrade.

i could probably make it too, but only if a track day could be arranged for the same weekend as it would make it moer worthwhile!! :)

Ahh yes but mine has black wheels :D much faster :D LOL
Seriously though, a comparison on what should be identical motors might reveal more than you would think perhaps...

Depending on when it is, I'd definitely be up for it. I'll either be in a bog-standard Leon 20VT or, if it's a bit later on, I'll be in an UPsoluted 20VT with Forge DV :).
It depends on when it is and cost for me!, but i would like to do it

It depends on when it is, and how much the costing is going to be, but I would definitely be interested.
Mine is a standard Beeza Cupra 1.8T, which there don't seem to be that many of around due to you lot all been super fast powerhouse boyz..
Depending on when and stuff, my Bro might also be interested. He drives an Audi A4 1.8T quattro (X-reg, last decent model).
Let us know the details if it goes ahead and I will see if we can make it down there.. bit of a trek from Hull..

I have more infor today after visiting the RR I had in mind.
the venue would be Power Station in Cheltenham. They are a very reputable rolling road and tuning company and do lots of RR days for various car clubs (including a lot of Jap cars)
The RR run, will cost £20 and include a full dyno plot from their 2wd/4wd rolling road including CO etc so they can advise on how the engine was performing on the power runs. Quattro & 4x4 boys can happily be accomodated.
Places are limited to 25 and the day would be a Saturday.
there is no date yet, as I would like to get confirmations from people and models of car attending.
There will no doubt, be a magazine or two present for featuring what I would like to be the best gathering of 1.8T engined VAG cars in the UK. (with Seats well represented ;))
If you could confirm to me via email to:-
dyno@badger5.demon.co.uk
Including the following details:-
Name:
Contact Number:
Car:
Model:
When I get names in I will be able to allocate the 25 available places.
regards
Bill Brockbank
Well if you can fit me onto the list i will be there!,
That is a really good price for a RR plot, performance engineering wanted £45+vat for their day!!, and that seemed a bit much to me
Not sure if I will be able to make it guys. Gotta a service at Amethyst on the 23rd, then nipping across to see the guys at RSD

Don't get my propsed RR day confused with Club Gti's one.
Mine has no date arranged yet.... still trawling for interest in it.

Bill,
I guess you were probably coming back from powerstation yesterday, when I follwed you!
I was behind you from cox's meadow, up to the lights by the old Stratford Hotel. You wouldn't have turned your head as I was only in my Renault 5 (runaround 'till I get my beezer), but I am picking my 20VT Beezer up on monday 19th from Holland.
By the way, your car looks the business with those black wheels, I even thought to myself, I should have ordered Yellow ! (but I have a black one coming my way very soon :) )
Too early for me to go to the RR session I think :)

Black was my 2nd choice... Scared of the dirt showing though.... Ha! - If only I'd known how yellow shows the dirt also :D :D so much for that theory :)
there must be quite a few of us around the Glos/Chelt area.. We should meet up sometime.

I have heard that it takes a huge speed to pressurise and intake... It will probably work better because it can breath cooler outside air.
Bill
Its mainly being fitted cos the LPG conversion bods want the airbox space to put the LPG bits cos the enginebays on these things dont have much spare room!
Bill,
Considering you say "Performance VW" mag will be there, there doesn't appear to be ANY VWs on the list!!! ;)
Do they cover the VAG group in general not just real VWs?
BTW, if your interested I might be able to get my mate to bring his Golf along... it used to be a Golf Mk2 1.3 litre, then he made it into a GTi by using parts from a wrecked Golf GTi and finally he added a Turbo to the old VW N/A 1.8 engine. Its a bit of an old rust bucket but its fairly fast.
Might be worth a comparison.
Let me know if your interested and I'll ask him.

I'm not surprised PVW are interested, since they did do a storming article on a certain tuners demo...known to some as the "silver shitter".
I'll bring it along if no one has seen that article.
PVW, like some of the other VW mags, are actually interested in the other brands within the VAG flag....as long as the car is a performance one i guess.
I'm sure they'll be featuring a 260+bhp Octavia RS WRC replica or something in the near future.......
Big thanks to Bill for organsing this by the way. Nice one.

At the wheels figures are the only reliable figures...
I have to agree with Puma on that one, and power at the wheels on one set of rollers rearely equals those of another.
Bill
Can't rolling roads be calibrated?
If rolling roads don't give accurate readings then is there another way to get an accurate reading?
Thanks,
Ben

In answer - yes they can, but how many actually do this regularly, and how many take into account all variables like barometric pressure, tyre pressure, vehicle weight etc etc...
Results relative on the day are the best you can get. You can just read The Golf mag and see the wild array of results from many UK rolling roads. It does'nt add up.
Power Station are reputable and work on many Jap cars and are mapping agents for Motec. They know there stuff, and the results should be realistic.

I might get RSD to bring their 235bhp Golf Demo...or, one of their customers with the same conversion!
I can't believe Dubsport has got a Lupo running 300bhp!! That is truly bonkers!

Bill is there any 210 Oettinger Leon's on that list?
If not i may make the effort and come down.
Let me know.
Sorry, changing to topic slightly, but Lee.... do RSD offer the 235 conversion for Ibizas too? I've got the 210 conversion already as you know but I'm now a power addict and like all addicts.... I WANT MORE!!!! Is this the kit they wont offer to Joe Bloggs?
Thanks,

I think they vet you before doing the 235 conversion. They wouldn't let Lee have it because he'd kill himself....:D :D :D :D
I think the ibiza is too light for anymore than 210 personally, you'd never get any traction...
Pete
How about doing the conversion the 235 on the beezer, then bolting 50Kilos of lead into the spare wheel space?, should give it a bit more weight and even up the front to rear balance problem?, might be wrong though, but the leon likes a bit of weight in the boot!, handles better
Icecavern
03-12-2001, 13:10
The ICE install would add that weight in the back..
Problem is then you'd never get any traction from the front wheels.. Needs a concreate engine cover I recon...

RSD looks like being unable to attend this RR day.
Ben, If you are seriously looking for more power from your beezer...and money is NO object (it will be bloody expensive which ever option you choose) i suggest you either:
1) Buy another car with more bhp.
2) Go to APR Europe and enquire about their 280bhp upgrade kit..at a cost of 4k!
3) Do an Audi TT transplant..then get someone like AmD to up the ante and get it running 260-270bhp.
4) Speak to Ian Birch at Dubsport to see what they can to for ya!
5) Speak to Mike Truluck at Jabbasport to see what he can do too.
6) Buy a MoTeC ECU management system...then map it so that it'll take 100bhp worth of Nitrous Oxide! Thats before you buy new pistons/conrod/bolts/mounts/gearbox/driveshaft/etc etc
Running costs will be seriously high. Insurance will be thru the roof...if they want to insure you anyway!
I think you get the picture!

Flapper,
You said that you thought 235bhp in a road Ibiza would be insane... I have to disagree... the 210 Ibiza is fast but its not unbelievably fast. 0-60 times arn't even 0.5 seconds faster than a Clio sport 172, and you could easily loose that 0.5 seconds through wheel spin, driver skill etc.
OK, I know 0-60 isn't the most important thing in the world but to me 3rd - 5th gear accelleration doesn't feel that amazing... well sort of. It doesn't "Feel" like I'm accelerating that fast but then if you look at the Speedo you realise that you are.... perhaps this is just a credit to the smoothness of the engine.
235bhp isn't THAT much more than 207bhp.... do you really think it would make THAT much difference?
To be honest I don't think I need any more power, really I think I want to adjust the gear ratios slightly... 1st gear needs to be longer so that you can put your foot down a bit without just wheel spinning, 2nd is quite good, 3rd - 5th should be made a bit shorter I think. Ideally I'd want a 6 speed box... 1st-5th ratios adjusted for best acceleration and 6th for economy.
Lee, thanks for the info on the options... I can honsestly say that I would of considered the APR 280bhp conversion if I had known about it! :) Now that probably would be insane!
Don't get me wrong... I love the power that the car currently has... its the most fun car I've ever had by far and theres nothing within £10k of the car that I would imagine would be more fun.
I can't wait for the summer when the roads are dry. :o)
Bill, sorry for changing the subject again.
Thanks,
Ben
PS. Has anyone else noticed how much slower the car feels when you have a passenger... even with my girlfriend who only weights 8 stone the car feels like its lost 50bhp. I never noticed this much difference on my 205 or 306.... but then I never had this much power then! :)

Ben,
I guess you only test drove the 207? If you compare it to a standard 156 it's completely different. There is only 50bhp between them. An extra 30bhp would be quite a large leap again.....

I guess it's OK if I I come along to meet people and see how things go. I don't want to enter my Beezer as it's early days, but i'm keen to get an idea about which ECU chip to go for.
Cheers

Go for it ADE I am entering a bog standard 1.8T , with 3000 miles on, they will need something to relate to. Think of it as a reference to work from, it could make people very happy or piss them of somewhat. We shall see!
To Mark Phelps, sorry about the mix up Mark we thought this might happen still have a good holiday. Perhaps I should be Mark R Phelps (unless your middle initial is R as well) or Welsh Git, what ever takes your fancy.

Bill etc,
This certainly looks as though it's going to be a fun/interesting day, but can I throw another chip in the pan? (Sorry, lame joke!)
I don't know if you've seen my post's in the Ibiza forum about the Dastek Unichip? Well to summarise, it's a piggyback chip that nobody seems to have but gets rave reviews.
That was me summary, for more info check out the post 'Upsolute or Other Chip' in the Ibiza forum. Sorry, can't be arsed to write it all out again, as I could have a case of RSI and I don't think my company would pay out as this ain't really work related!?!?!
Anyway the reason for this post is it'll be good to see a Unichip car on the RR along with the Oettingers and Upsolutes etc. I've been speaking to Gerry Gaffney who works at the main Unichip outlet for the UK about arranging to have one present on the 19th. The thing is, we're after a donor car.
Is anyone interested in being a donor for a day or two?
I believe Gerry is going to speak to PowerStation, where you're all going, about fitting the chip etc. but obviously none of this can go ahead if no-one is willing to be a donor. Maybe we could speak to Amethyst or something? I don't know, just weighing up the options at the moment. I'd offer, but my car is the old Golf MKII GTi 16V.
Any ideas/donors/questions/suggestions anyone?
Cheers,
Chris.
Does the doner car keep the unichip

Could I ask this question to the standard engine 20VT's on the list already.....
GTEVO's question of do they get to keep it if they want it for free or discounted etc as its a promo if all works well on the day. My reservation is does it need setting up (mapping) as on the day there will be no time to do this. something for the Unichip man to advise us on.
Anyone care to volunteer?

Bill,
I heard back from Gerry last night and apparently there is an Audi A4 that might be able to come along. It was 148bhp standard and is now 197bhp with only 12psi boost.
Could you save a space for Unichip car of some sort anyway?
In regards to installing on the day, as you mention, that'll be out of the question. It can take up to a day to set the whole thing up, and would therefore need to be done beforehand. As for a discount for the donor, I can't answer that and unfortunately Gerry is now away for a week. If it does come to the point of requiring a donor car, I'll pose the question of what would be in it for the donor.
Cheers,
Chris.

I'll add a place for a Unichip someone, but I will need confirmation of attending as places are scarce and demand is high.

The day kicks off between 9.00 and 9.30 and there are a lot of cars to be done so if you were to arrive between 10.00-11.00 then I doubt you will miss your slot.

Bill,
I'll let you know as soon as I know. Problem is, Gerry is now away for a week. It's a case of one of the people already going having it done, or another car being supplied. Depending on the result from that, depends on if an additional place is needed, or one already taken up.
I'll speak to Gerry when he's back and see what can be sorted for an Ibiza or Leon if we have a donor. Discounts etc.
Would be good if we could get an Ibiza or a Leon with one though don't you think?
Cheers,
Chris.

I agree... Leon or Ibiza would make good comparitive results on the day considering the other cars who said they are going.

I cant see my car doing at all well on the day, i estimate that i am getting around 160Bhp and 160Lbs of torque as well   :(
Mosser,
I've been away for a bit and I've obviously missed something, but why do you think you are only getting 160bhp? You have the Upsolute 212bhp chip don't you?
Thanks
Ben
