View Full Version : What Chip ??
Looking for ideas, possible problems with all the tdi chipping companies around....
1- Revo
Look really good but, haven't gotten a response via e-mail. No dealer in Portugal.
2- Upsolute
This was my 1st choise a while back. Good price but have heard from a couple of guys (hear in Portugal) that the power is less than stated.
3- Others
What ever other company U've got (Wetterauer,ABT, Oettinger,etc..)
Amd why.
Looking to get something going within a week or two. Please remember this is for a 150hp PD engine that does approx 80000km/yr
I chose revo (apr back then) for my 130 for a price /performance increase nothing came close. Apparently theve been swamped recently with enquiries so bear with them I'm sure they'll get back to you.
Definatly Revo. The stealth abilities and the price at the time (although a bit expensive now) swayed me, plus their SPS technology although extra to buy is a great for added functionality.
The one thing i would say is Revo (nor APR) used to have a forum saying 'my car is in limp mode' and 'help my car is f*cked'
Thanks for all the info. The revo stuff looks good, but its also a bit pricey. I guess you get what you pay for though. I just hope they can chip me via snail mail/DHL or something. Then again even if they can do this, I'll still have to remove the ECU. Is this difficult? Or is it just removing some screws and plugs?

Have prices gone up then?
Well from the site the price is £499 + Vat.
Noticed that there's no 150pd chip under the Seat brand.
I managed to get in just before christmas and although I actually got the Revo program they honoured the APR discount and price which was cool. So I only paid £396 inc VAT which is considerably less than the asking price now.
I think I would still go for it now at the current price but it may of taken me longer to make my mind up, after all what's the saying "A way to a mans heart is through his wallet".

Paulo,
I've chipped a few 150PD Golf's and the owners have been very pleased with the performance improvements.
Your reseller over there might offer you a 30 day money back guarantee if you're not happy with the performance - I do over here.
I don't think you'd want your money back back if you went for it.
As for removing your ECU - it's not too difficult, it can be a bit fiddley and you have to be careful not to damage the ECU plugs by trying to remove/replace them before the locking tabs are fully withdrawn.
Simon.

Is the Revo code different to the APR code then? I mailed a few days aago to ask direct, but I understand that they're a bit busy and I haven't heard back yet. I do remember them saying that upgrades would be free, which is why I'd really like to know if I'm missing out on something!
Simon,
I definitely want it chipped. I've tried a similar toledo chipped by ABT. Power was excellent (even though not the most I've seen, rated at 175PS), but what really hooked me was the smoothness and the lack of a dip in power around 3100-3500 rpm (both characteristics of the 150PD engine). I can't get ABT hear:(
I know a couple of guys who have complained that after an RR day, they found that the Upsolute chiped engine was not producing stated HP (not that I'm looking for max HP).

I would expect so, otherwise they would probably end up in court.

Fair point, but wouldn't offering APR customers a free upgrade do the same?
It may be different but no better then I guess...
Richard told me that if when I wanted the SPS gadget that it needed a minor update to the software to enable the SPS to switch programs. I think it may be that at the moment my ECU only has the Revo code installed and to get the SPS to switch the original program has to be added etc. Feel free to flame me if this is wrong Richard !
As far a I know the APR program that you have in yours Fen is actually the Revo one but was on licence from Revo at the time yours was installed. So I think you are only missing out on the SPS function if you want it.
I just hope Richard answers my e-mail this week or early next week. I need to make a trip out to Madrid around the 15th of Feb. and wanted to have the car chipped and problems (if any) sorted out before going:)

prc, send the mail again. we are still experiencing promlems with email(will work one minute and then not the next, very frustrated with BT:mad: )
We will need to know your ECU# and it can be done mail order as it will be a little while before a Portugal dealer is up and running.
Anyone with Ibiza software from last year will only require the software upgrade when they choose to have the switchable option.Last years codes did not have the inclusion to allow SPS1 functions.
Is there still any hope of cruise control / switchable coming?

Thanx Richard, will do tomorrow morning. Basically want to know if it's possible and how (send ECU, etc...) payment (visa, bank transfer, etc....). Plus as RB5 mentioned is Cruise available???
Not that interested in the switchable stuff. Thanx again
Well REVO seems to be the winner in this war, now have to get me credit card out:) Richard has gone out of his way to answer all my questions, an extremely helpful guy!
RB5 - from what Richard has told me you can get SBS1 switch and/or cruise.

sorry for my bad english
tr=rpm ;)
I spoke to Richard andf Mitch about Revo stuff yesterday. Basically it seems that they won't be doing cruise for the new Ibiza but that all parts aare aavailable and Stealth (for example) can do it. There will be no switching option via cruise, it has to be SPS1. There will only be SPS1 for diesels unless a demand for SPS3 materialises. Personally SPS1 would do me.

Your English is fine. Anyone got any idea how 39.7 mkg converts in lb/ft?
1 lb ft = 0.1383 mkg
287 Lb/ft if my maths is right and it is 39.7
 still isn't 307 :D (or 299.9 for that matter)

RB5 or Rage ?
Have you the dyno paper ?
I think MarkP is going to post something with all the results when he has had a chance to prepare it all. I'm happy to post mine if not, but I thought I'd just wait and take the lazy option...
I'll probably get around to having it on the Ibiza link in my signature, but I haven't even taken the plot out of the car yet.
Its moved the max torque point down 500 revs as well. Thats where the boost just cuts in. Theres tons more fun to be had after that.
Nope I'll stick with what I've got and make up the 10bhp with an exhaust and panel filter. maybe even a SPT(tm) induction kit
I have no scanner and a photo wouldn't turn out too well. As fen said markP will be posting them all.

Thanks RB5 ;)
Rage has ~170 HP @ 4500 rpm
and RB5 ~183 HP @ 4000 rpm
the HP of rage is placed up about 500 rpm up
Why ?
Is it the same chip ?
maybe RB5 stop the dyno plot @ 4000~rpm
My plot stops at 4,480rpm by which time power was dropping a lot (172bhp or so by the plot). I did notice the difference in rpm and wondered about that too. I have no idea...
It is the same chip

May be Richard can explain the difference to us ?
Does anyone remember where APR posted the plot for their development car? We could compare that...

Looking at the torque, they're from the Golf.
Peak power is smack between mine and Simon's...
There was a scan of a plot from Stealth (so same rollers) on here somewhere IIRC...
My mistake I was quoting the figure from memory and got them mixed up.
179.4Bhp @ 3993 rpm
299.9Bhp @ 2454 rpm
Max revs during test 4523rpm

RB5, RAGE > The engine sounds different after the chiptuning ?
There is a growl / vibration at about 2,000 - 2,500 rpm, especially in 6th but otherwise it's just the same sound.
From what I've been told you could remove the rear muffler and the sound would be about the same. I think Simon mentioned he was looking into an exhaust.

It's not unknown to get a slight vibration/shudder around the 2k rpm mark on diesels. It can be more noticable on some than others. It depends on the driver as to whether it's a problem or not.
UPsolute offer slightly lower torque files to remove this if the customer wishes.
Simon.

Having the possibility of reducing the torque a bit seems to be a good for those who wish a smoother ride. So Upsolute doesn't make just 1 version per engine? You can tailor it a bit?

Yeah that's right,
For the TDi's for instance they have low/medium smoke versions as well as low/medium torque versions.
Of course, the low torque file doesn't mean 'low' it just means it's eased back slightly thus removing the slight shudder that can be noticable on some cars.
We make sure that we have a file to suit the car and driver.
Simon
Good to know. I had the idea that the chips where one of those off the self type items. One size fits all.

They are essentially a generic chip, but yes we have many files for each car in respect to what I've described above. Basically we don't want unsatisfied customers and so do what we need to do to get things right, although in 99% of cases the chip is spot on to start with. This is why we offer a 30 day money back guarantee, so ultimately if the customer isn't happy they can have a refund.
