Dissasembly of a flip key

First split the key, to do this get a wide flat bladed screwdriver place it on the join under where the blade sits when closed and twist to prise it apart.

now, remove the round badge to reveal a screw

now prise apart as shown below

as it comes apart do it slowly and keep an eye on the spring.

reassembly is pretty much the reverse except you need to wind the spring so it will flip the key. And you will probably need a new badge too, i used nail varnish to hold it in place.

Remote Control Programming 1997 on. (without VAG-COM)

1. Switch ignition ON and leave the key in ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the drivers door using a second key.
3. Press the remote control unlock button once and the horn will sound once.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button to activate the coding procedure. The remote will now be programmed.
NOTE : If you are programming additional remotes the procedure is the same except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times (with a 1 second interval) depending on how many you have.
5. Switch ignition off.
6. Remove key from ignition and check operation (just in case ;))



Remote Control Erasing 1997 on. (without VAG-COM)

1. Switch ignition ON and leave the key in ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the drivers door using a second key.
3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals. A short horn will sound.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory erase.
5. Switch ignition off, all remotes are now erased.

Thanks for the info.

My remote is 3 button. I bought an additional remote key from the wonder that is e bay, progged the remote functions no problem, had a new blade cut and booked my car in at the stealers for programming after checking that the part numbers were identical (they were). After an hour they informed me they had 'fried the dash' but would sell me a new one!.

After having a sharp intake of breath and a bit of a tantrum when i realise they were not joking, they eventually managed to get my car out of safe mode after an age on the phone to Seat support but my new key still did not work and they did not know why (at least they only charged me £20 for the privilege - I am sure they also scraped the bottom edge of the front bumper on their ramp but cannot prove it) .

All they could suggest was buying a new one from them at a cost of £55 plus another £38 for programming!

Do you know much about the key programming process? my local key specialist can cut the blades and programme Audi and VW but cannot do Seat or Skoda and is reluctant to say much about the process, although I imagine it is identical.

For example, are the transponders unique? i.e once assigned to one particular car can they then be reprogrammed to another or must a new transponder be obtained? Does the car that the existing transponder is tuned to need to be cancelled before it can be assigned to another car?

If a new one is required, where can I get one from or must I bite the bullet and return to the stealer and get another new key.

Any info greatfully received.

The easiest thing for you to do is to buy a new virgin transponder, they are about £3.50 +p&p (there is a link to a place that sells them in one of the flip key threads)

After reading the lengthy thread I might have a go and try to remove the existing (used) transponder from the new flip key and put the already coded one from my non remote key into it.

It does seem a very delicate operation though and the transponder in my non remote key is glued in.

just take your time, i soaked mine in IPA, others have used super glue remover to get it out

I found it quite easy to split new flip key after reading the various threads, broke the old transponder getting it out but learned how to do it properly before removing the transponder from my non flip key.

Non flip key was easy to split open, just used a screwdriver at the end and then prised it apart with my fingers.

I used a mixture of Loctite super glue remover and IPA (wasn't sure of what this was at first as only IPA I had come across before was brown and I bought it in a pub - India Pale Ale - LOL!!).

Left it to soak for about a day and a half (found a day wasn't long enough as that's how I broke the other one), topping up the IPA as it evaporated every few hours and gave the mixture a gentle stir with a cocktail stick to make sure it got under the transponder and ate away the glue. Super glue remover is a gel so it doesn't run. The IPA helped it get where it was needed.

I used a bent paper clip and very gently pushed it under one end of the transponder and it just came away, no fuss or resistance. Gave it a quick wipe clean and popped it into the new remote key. I have held it in place with a little cotton wool.

Put the key back together and tested it on the car. Works fine.

The badge is very slightly damaged but I have a new one on order from the dealer. How SEAT justify £3.27 for something smaller than a penny I will never know but at least it will look mint.

I've just put back together my key, but it no longer 'flips'. Something to do with the spring I am guessing, so any ideas?

on re assembly you need to tension the spring to give it the flip action (make sure its the right way too or your going to have a key that flips shut!!!)

Do you still have the Seat badge Part No as I bet a lot of people would like it, and if tagged to this fantastic guide will help most if not all Flip Key modders.

The part number I have is 1M0837891AJGT - description - Seat sign. It was £3.27 inc VAT last July.

Unfortunately, it is the black and silver badge, not the latest one which has a red shadow within the 'S'.

Still, it's better than the one I damaged removing it plus it is only for use as a spare. No doubt your local Seat parts person can bring up the proper one on their microfiche or computer if you ask them nicely, especially if you have the part number as detailed above.

Im going to re-kindle this thread for the benefit of others! Im going to get a blade cut as soon as i find somewhere that does them, but is it possible to separate the blade from the cylindrical housing type effort?

Also, you speak of virgin transponders, im guessing these are the little glass "fuse" type efforts that i can program using the manual set of instructions rather than buggering about with my old key?

blade comes out by removing the tiny pin thats in it, can only be seen when half open

Right unfortunately it seems i have purchased the wrong "fob" part of the remote, i need a 433mhz fob, so remember children, always check your frequencies!!!
