View Full Version : Should I have a service before the RR day???

I've made this a poll just for the hell of it.

My car is currently on 17,000 miles, with 8 working days to the RR day. Between now and then I reckon it'll do another 1,500 - 2,500.

I think it's getting a little flat (but maybe I'm just used to it by now) and the oil looked pretty black when I dipped it at the weekend, so do you think it's work getting it serviced the day before the RR day, possibly 1,000+ miles early?

I remember my diesel Laguna company car (that I chucked back after 4 miserable months; it sounded like a tractor but it wasn't quite as sporty) used to get noticeably less powerful by about 8,000 miles and would be better after each 10k service, so would I see bit improvement by hving my 20k service done, bearing in mind I'm still on my original air and fuel filters?

Oh, and on a joyous note I kerbed the crap out of one of my alloys yesterday avoiding a w@nker tipper-truck driver who obviously wasn't capable of driving something that big. To$$er.

if it's dropping in power & the oil looks like dirt then yes

that said i forgot to change mine for 35,000 & it was OK :D

Sorry to hear about your alloys. Yes probably worth getting it serviced. It can't hurt anything other than your pocket. Could improve your RR performance.

A TDi's oil will always be black, even very soon after a change.

A 20k service should involve an air filter change, this is probably causing the power loss. Changing/draining the fuel filter will do no harm either.

IMO get it done. :car:

I agree, U should get it done. I'd also note that you'd be surprised at how much power you loss when the fuel filter hasn't been drained.

OK, I thought as much myself, so I've booked it for Saturday the 8th at SMC Exeter, around £130 apparently.

What's this stuff, then?

I'm only in the office tomorrow, so another 80 miles tops to go before the service but that should see me on 19,300, so it's worth doing that much early.

How many miles has your's done Rage? It'll be interesting to see if there's any difference between them.

I remember putting some redex directly the cylinders of a previous car - when I started the engine this huge cloud of white smoke blew out and floated down the road :) I guess this stuff does the same sort of thing so be careful where you do it!

Service complete. It seems a bit better, but the air and fuel filters don't get replaced until 40k

I also got mudflaps and ordered headlamp covers, and I had my locking modified to lock and unlock automatically. SMC have software problems with their new computer (so struggled with the old one today) but will have a look at adding the three flash indicators and auto-slowing wipers next time it's in. I also got my last warranty work done to replace my headrest tubes in the drivers seat (now the headrest stays where it's put).
£242 though

RB5,

IMO get a replacement air-filter from Halfords (less than a tenner) and whack it in. Keep the old SEAT one and refit it if any warranty work is req'd or just before the 40k service.

Done the same with my Bammer, it goes much better now.

Blimey, that's a long stint for an air filter. Especially considering diesels suck air all the time, unlike petrols which are throttled. The air filter has a real effect on performance, economy and smokiness.

I thought my Rover was a bit long at 24k intervals, 'cos it's pretty black even after 12k, but 40k ???

I'd do what Brian says, or get a K&N replacement filter & clean it every so often. But I'd keep a Seat one to hand for warranty & service times like Brian says....
I noticed a difference in my Rover with the K&N, seemed to rev more freely at higher revs. And it works out cheaper than regularly buying new paper ones over a high mileage.

Fen,

I take it you havent got the Revo SPS thing to return to the factory engine mapping - did they not notice the power increase?

Fen

I almost asked them just to chuck in a new air filter - don't really know why I didn't now  I guess I had in mind to get a performance one. I'll try to find a Halfords one tomorrow befor I hit the rollers then ;)

Dave,

My car has been in for 2 services and twice more for warranty work since it was chipped (I only had it 8 days before it was done, remember). They've never mentioned it having a chunk more go than it should.

MY dealer knows I've had it done but they don't seem to mind. The owners son is taking his leon cupra R to get done. They also have a chipped 100bhp TDi with a Van Aaken tuning box to bring it up to 130.

I'd guess that they know mine's been done too, we just haven't ever spoken about it.

My dealer knows as well. Hell my car's going to be there next week while the ECU is over at REVO. Plus we'll both be working to get the ECU + cruise control in and working.:D

Are you kidding:) Since the dealers Vag com thingy is being repaired, I took apart the plastic covers to get the ecu number myself. Want to get it over to Richard early monday morning to check on availability.
