View Full Version : Which turbo is better allrounder..?
TD05H-18G

or the TD05H-18G 8cm2

Apart from looks what are the main differences in performance e.g lag and torque
:)
are you trying to compare the 7cm to the 8cm housing? obviously the 8 will be laggier but with a better top end.The compressor housing makes a difference aswell.

better top end if you have everything else to support it.. what revs?
what can the compressor actually pump on this unit?
remounting the actuator and clocking it looks like it will require some welding of bosses on the comp housing
i thought wilko had provided some info on g/s?
18g thought to be 590cfm 39lb/min
evo 16g6 585cfm 37lb/min

comp wheel on vf34 is 39lb tho is'nt it, but choked by its small turbine/hotside
Pe was 44lb, FP green 49lb, but well over +100bhp from Pe to Green. Difference being the hotsides massively different so total flow improves. (assumes manifold can happily flow all of this mind you as my step change included equal length manifold @ same time.)
I prefer the sound of the one with the 7cm housing because i want to use the car for trackdays aswel and prefer spool up speed over topend..
Btw can i run a 4bar fpr with a IHI v34/20 and 440cc injectors or do i need to stick with a 3bar fpr..?
thanks
4 bar it is then :)
vf34 compressor inducer=47.9mm exducer=60mm
18g inducer=50.5mm exducer=68mm
16g6(evo) inducer=48.3mm exducer=68mm
pe1820 inducer=52.5mm exducer 70mm

vf34 435cfm 30lb/min
not according to info I have on them it is'nt.
460cfm @ 18psi
not according to info I have on them it is'nt.
look at the size of the compressor wheel above,no way it's a 39lb/min

whatever Ryan
lifes to short.
:banghead:
i've looked further into this a standard 16g wheel is 33lb/min which is fractionally smaller than a vf34 compressor and a gt28rs 35lb/min which is fractionally bigger .So i guess we could guesstimate it at 34lb/min.
The 435cfm on the vf34 is at 1 bar as are the others. Some sites quote the 18g at 40lb/min aswell. Combined with the much larger and more free flowing exhaust housing of the 18g you can see why it makes 40-50bhp more.Whether this extra power means it's above the limit for standard internals i don't know but you could run it at lower boost for increased reliabilty.

hey there all tiny turbos to you anyway.

the TD05H-18g would look to be a VF34 replacement at face value.
only time will tell how they fare reliability wise of course.
was'nt that long ago that VF34 was the god of 1.8T turbo upgrades and now look at it............ the most failing turbo out there.
we're all too greedy wanting more than is reliable and its our own fault.
:hide:
but isn't the TD05 18g good for 400bhp..?
I will just need to change oil and coolant line right..? keep the mani and DP..
i mentioned the 18g to mike a few years ago and he told me jerome used one and made 40bhp more than the vf34 at the same boost. He seemed obsessed with using a big 16g but from what i can gather it was not much of a improvement over the vf34.
subaru guru john banks loved the td05h based turbos .

18g good for a real 380 imo
vf34 is a 340 max
well after the my IHI install, what would be good for 400bhp IYO..?
thats where i will stop .. I think
owens ihi/gt hybrid but you will need uprated internals.
O...:confused::blink:
But why is everyone raving on about the TD05H 18g ...
I'm in the process of ordering internals..
because it's a better alternative to the vf34.If your looking at 400+ i'd go for a fp green or bigger, bill is the man to talk to.
Go read scoobynet. On a 2l very few would advise anything over an 18g on a 2l. Loads of history over ther. Vf34 was a scooby turbo after all.
I have got 39lb/min out of the 18g and could get no more than 34lb/min from a vf34. Both wer compresser max not turbine, as shutting the wastegat more didn't increase flow, only exhaust back pressure.
On a smallport, an 18g should hold 1.8bar to 7500. Do you realy want to run more boost than that?
I will be happy with 390 or 400bhp with a good delivery..
jay just fit the bloody thing and stop looking for another turbo before you've fitted the ihi:lol: my turbo is a tdo5/20g with a 44lb/min compressor wheel which is laggy but pulls hard to the redline! haven't dynoed mine yet but it ran a 12.8 1/4 and 0-60 in 4secs without nitrous. with that in mind i'm guessing mines pushing circa 400bhp with boost set at 1.6bar.
not sure whether a 18g can manage 390/400bhp ,wilko is the man to talk to .
I agree with everything he said.

:) i can't help but prepare for the future
i'm just sorting out internals at the same save farting around later on...
It will be ready to go in soon :D

 next year after i've bought a new house
wow ,a full on tdo6 compressor housing bet that took some fitting!
wow ,a full on tdo6 compressor housing bet that took some fitting!god yeah! put it this way if either the head or clutch goes it's an engine out job:cry: would of liked to go equal length mani and push the turbo up higher behind the head but couldn't afford it at the time:(anyway hows things with you ryan:)
ditto:D

that TD05 comp housing clear the cyl head & block on Jabba mani?
Nothing wrong with the APR GT28RS unit but it's only 340-350 on 98 RON fuel.
Still makes my car into a very different car from old KO3s days with good early spool from 2-3000rpm....brilliant for 'everyday' use and good on track too!!
Why bother with trying to achieve 400hp unless you are seriously competing like Bill. In a FWD it can become unmaneagable unless you are prepared to beef 'everything' up to cope.
As Wilko and other's will verify it becomes frighteningly expensive. Bill has much experience over the years trying and testing different combinations for road and track and knows what breaks and what doesn't.
For an everyday package with track use in mind I'd turn the wick down and put reliability as my first concern unless you can sustain breakages. Really big turbo's and their installations are an ever evolving development.
Thats a td06 compressor housing bill,here is a picture of a evo 8 td05 compressor cover and a evo 9 td06 cover.

like this.. http://badger-5.com/bin/new-mani/new-turbo-mani-1.jpg and not a chance it fits a jabba manifold properly.

Things are fine mate, sold the s3 and got a evo, quite fancy trying one of those evo fp green's bit like your td05h 20g but based on a evo 9 turbo .

you not got it?
Question is " so which is the best all rounder " ? I suspect nobody can answer that one.
