Right, just had rear 6x9s put in, Rockford Fosgate at a very favourable price and free fitting. The low bass notes are very strong (almost too much unless you keep the bass level down), also copes with the high notes fine but in between I have very little quality mid range, the total sound effect does not seem anything like as rich and full as it should be.
Some of this may be the fact that the Rockfords are a rather bass-heavy 6x9 and don't dish out midrange as well as Kenwood or Pioneer 6x9s but am I right in thinking the majority of the mid range should be provided by the front speakers anyway?

So who has upgraded the fronts, what do you lot recommend speaker wise? Has to be standard fit but I don't mind spending a few bob on them if the sound is a big improvement.
And Flapper I need those speaker adaptors don't I?

It just doesn't sound right at the moment despite playing with the f/r fader, bass and treble for ages. There is punishing low bass on hand (you are highly unlikely to need a subwoofer with the Rockfords even without an amp) and fine high notes but it sounds really flat and lifeless in between. I hope some decent fronts will sort the balance out or I may consider swapping to some more versatile 6x9s.

P.S. Seeing as its supposed to be a bit tricky have any of you had your 20VT fronts done by an ICE specialist in the South East that you can recommend? I'm bound to f**k it up if I do it myself. ;)

Paul

We've just helped Saul install Kenwood Dual Mags in his 20VT, very nice they sound too, once hes got them amp'd up too they'll be class.

NIce choice with the Rocky 6x9's bet they sound well.

Rockford also do some nice component sets, which should work well in the Ibiza's front doors too.

They also do some more expensive Fanatic Kits that would be impressive, its always good to try and match up makes, as you get a kind of sound that complements each other, but obviously not essential.

Im probably going for Fanatics, but im also up for some Focal's to match my sub.

Though if funds allow i may stretch to Diamond Audio's

To fit front components you'll need these Paul
SAK-3105 Speaker Adaptors

http://www.incar-discount.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Speaker_Adaptors_29.html

Clearance for the magnets is an issue though, worth asking Saul what his clearance was, i never thought to look, the Dual Mags fitted with no trouble, but something with a larger and deeper magnet may struggle, the problem being the glass from the window comes down and enters slightly at the back of the speaker mount.

If you have a big magnet there, its going to catch the window which isnt good :(

Important Tip : When fitting speakers always wind your windows down. :)

I would speak to Saul though Paul if your serious about doing it, he can tell you more about it. It was a mission, but well worth it, those brackets we found were a life saver.

Im hoping next weekend to take a look at my doors, cause i want to uprate mine soon.

Cheers

I had another listen and it doesn't sound too bad (I may have exaggerated a tad - I was unfairly comparing CDs to how they'd sound on my hifi) but when you fade 100% to the front you realise how crap the factory fronts are and what notes you are missing out on. Cranking up the rear bias more to compensate is not the answer. You'll just end up giving the rear windscreen a hard time ;)

Saul, lets have some recommended speaker dimensions - you iz da Ibeefa stereo God.

P.S. Lee, whats the DB drag scene? - I've never worn women's clothes in my life.

db drag......DeciBels....i.e. SPL (sound pressure level) competition for people who can create the highest db level from their installs!

Some installs have done 160 db.....which is louder than Concorde on take off apparently!!!!

Totally amzaing....you should see some of the subs in these things...they're HUGE!!!!

Yes, yes I know really I was just joking. I'll need to get one of those big "BASS the final frontier" stickers and enter.
You've been watching Carnage again haven't you (and secretly enjoying it)

Yeah, I know switching that off makes a big difference on bass heavy tracks, and I can also adjust the bass level to suit but its the lack of quality mid range sound fill from the door speakers thats my biggest gripe. The lower range frequency response of the factory ones must be pants. Its not as if they are that small either, they are 6 1/2 inch diameter aren't they Saul/Mark? Thats big enough to get some really decent sound out of.

Buy the speaker adaptors, without them its nigh on impossible, unless you have copious amounts of patients which i do not possess.

Depth is an issue, i went for the kennys cos:

a) They are good quality gear
b) They dont need massive magnet depth (some of the JBl & Rockford Compos need at least 80-90mm)

The kennys need 60mm, you may get away with 70mm, but anymore and it will be too close to the window.

Shop around for the Kennys, u'll be able to get em for £115 (£150 RRP)

KFC-PSR70P

And once again, buy the speaker adaptors, and some decent glue to stick the cross overs down eh Mark!!!

Paul,

If your worried about it why not go to a decent stereo shop and get them to do it for you? If its any help i can definately suggest Huets as they did my Punto for me and that was awesome! there fairly well known too. bit of a drive for you but not too bad. They are in Brighton and Worthing. Could get you details if you liked.

Cheers BB, Brightons not too far if they are sh1t hot. I got a good deal locally on the Rockfords (119.99 FITTED instead of 149.99 RRP without fitting) but I don't trust them to do anything too tricky or fiddly.
Lets have the details please - we could also use this as an excuse to have a mini-meet in Brighton again.
Got an email address for them?

Saul - the Kenwoods are presumably components as you mention crossovers - so where did you mount the tweeters (were they part of the kit?)

Paul,

Heres the details for the brighton branch:

Huet Car Audio & Security
12-18, Richardson Rd
Hove East Sussex BN3 5RB
Tel: 01273 735700

Their about a 5 min drive from the pub we all went to to watch the footie. You know the one that sold anything you liked as long as it was sausages! :D

They also have a branch in worthing which is the one i used as it nearer me but its the same bunch of fitters. Like i say they fitted all the subs and amps in my punto and looking from outside you wouldnt know there was anything there!

Hope that helps

Marc

PS Meet up sounds a good idea too! :)

Yeah they come with the tweeters and x-overs.

We mounted the tweeters on the plate on the back of the door mirrors next to where the standard ones are in the grilles.

They come with all the bits so u just drill the holes and screw em in, i'll try and get some pictures up.

Saul you can pop down to Brighton and act as technical advisor for Huet Car Audio & Security.
Right, just got to compile a list of parts:
SAK-3105 Speaker Adaptors from that website
KFC-PSR70P (maybe get em from Huet if they're gonna fit em)

Anything else needed?

Yeah a tube of really good glue for the crossovers :)

Brighton

Oh yeah, thats just round the corner innit ;)

You'll need a bit of cable aswell to run from the X-overs to the speakers and tweeters (they dont supply u that) and some blade & bullet connectors but i imagine the shop will have those.

Allow 2-3 days for the adaptors to arrive just in case.

Like i said i'll try and get some piccies on asap.

BTW if ur not amping them up, get them to run the fronts on the highpass on the x-over, off the std head the bass signal is a bit shit to the fronts.
