View Full Version : Induction kit vs panel filter
I'm leaning towards a replacement K&N panel filter for my Ibiza 20VT as opposed to an induction kit. The guys at Jabba seem to think that the stock airbox is pretty good 'coz of the cold air feed and that it's the standard filter that's the problem. They've also said that a simple bolt-on induction unit which sucks hot air from around the engine won't achieve much, other than sounding good.
Any views on the induction kit vs panel filter option ??
The car's running 190BHP.........should this affect my choice ??

Stick a panel filter in it, and fit a larger intake pipe into the stock airbox.
Budget mods but should work fine.

I have a K&N induction kit with two cold air feed pipes, one running from the bumper and the other from the grill, therefore running direct cold air onto the kit, i think the "Induction type" kits are better such as K&N, pipercross etc, although they are alot more pricey than a standard panel filter, i think they are worth it.
Well thats my view anyway, my K&N kit was £100:eek: and £20 for the 2 pipes fitting onto it!
it makes a nice growl and does lift the performance for example mine is only supposed to be 115BHP standard and its running 132BHP, obviously not just because of the induction kit, but it has helped alot, and oh boy, do i love those very cold dry nights, she absolutely screams along!! I'm a very happy chappy with such a simple modification.:D

The man knows a decent set up when he sees it! :D :D

Anyone actually measured the depression in the airbox with a std set up, then with an induction kit. I'd be amazed if the std box looses more than 5 kpa, which maybe could be worth as much as 1 bhp (perhaps!)
Only reason to change is for a louder noise!

DOR,
Ive been told you made some DIY airbox mods to your 20vt? What have you done. Ive shoved my standard airbox back on now coz ive sold my hurricane. Want to know the best way of getting a tad more power for a DIY jobbie. Cheers.
Same principles, ram more cold air through it.
When the weather is better, I will try my tin-foil heat deflector designs and use a larger intake pipe.

Called drainpipe. you hreat it with a hot airgun till it becomes mouldable then stick it over the OEM airbox entry tube to get the right shape.
Use bit of rubber on end of new tube (bit from oem tube above) and plug whole thing back into airbox....voila...twice the cross-sectional area.

One slight difference between yours Dor and mine (just before it got remove again) was I had an 80mm cold air feed pipe attached to the larger intake pipe to the airbox as well. A legacy of the Hurricanes installation.

I do like the sound of my pipercross induction kit, although I'm not sure whether it really makes any difference. Like Tony says it does go like stink when the weather is right though.
Depends whether you're bothered about the noise. If not a panel filter with some more cold air would probably be just as good, and cost less.

I actually changed to a K&N Panel filter replacement in my Std Leon Cupra...
took it out after a week...
no noticable performance gain ..slight or imagined loss of torque around 3000rpm...
The OE panel is the same as the TT 225 therefore it should have no probs letting through enough air for my 180bhp set up.

Sorry for asking such a question but I have been looking for a K&N panel filter for my '01 20VT Beeza for two years now but unfortunately no K&N catalogue nor K&N dealers knew what I was talking about.
Do you mind telling me the dimensions of the one you have on your car and the K&N part number ..PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAASE.
OH man I am dying to get it.

A mate of mine has spoken to someone at K&N who confirmed that they don't currently have a filter for the 20VT, but the guy he spoke to said that if I tell him the part number for the factory supplied SEAT filter, (ie: so they know the dimensions, etc) they'll make one ASAP !! So I'll be sorting this out this week.;)
