speaker + / - polarity

is it easy to tell if you've wired them up wrongly once you're listening to them, and can it damage them?

need a quick answer, so posting in this forum :)

im pretty sure it wont work if you wire it the wrong way, wether or not it would do damage, i doubt it but im not an electrician so i'll say no comment on that one.

Its wont damage them, but if your have one speaker set +- and then another -+ your basically cancelling out the sound! The speakers will be out of phase.

ok, so i'd be able to tell on a quick run at med volume?

i tested the continuity in-circuit, which after i routed and guessed, i realised was not too clever

Read something once about a 9v battery. Depending upon which way the cone went think inwards was positive.

"You can check polarity by using a 9 volt battery. Take a length of cable and snip both ends. connect it to your speaker and touch the other ends to a 9V battery. The positive lead on the 9V is the small one. It should cause the speaker to push OUTWARD.

This will not hurt your speakers provided you don't walk away and leave the battery attached"

the speakers will not make a sound if u have wired them in the wrong way around! the bigger connector on the speaker is the + and the wire with the black line on it is the - which gos onto the smaller connector on the speaker

both ways the speaker seems to play, but one way it may sounded a bit hollow (or just myimagination)

Complete rubbish...

All you do by wiring them the "wrong way round" is you change the phase of the sound coming out of the speaker. In my Leon when I was competing ( and winning ) I had the drivers door mid out of phase with the rest of the speakers and it sounded better.

You can't do any damage by wiring a speaker up backwards. Power cables on the other hand should never be connected wrong or you will let the magic smoke out...

in theory then there are 4 speakers (tweeters mains) and each can be normal or 180 out?

is it worth testing each combination to see if for example, it soinds good when the right tweeter is out, and all the rest in?
