View Full Version : Found an exhaust for the 130PD

Well I found one. Only one mind and its not the prettiest thing I've seen. I went through every manufacturer I could find and only 1 exhaust to show for it http://www.mitcom2.com/supersprint/prodotti/911759.jpg

Made by supersprint. I'm awaiting price details from the importer, who has never brought one into this country before.

Will post back soon.

edit :

the picture here is a representation of the style only and does not show the actual 130 exhaust as I could find no pictures of it.

That looks pretty smart IMO

I'm not convinced by the way it goes back in at the end. Having said that its the ONLY exhaust there is and I might have to wait 3 weeks for it to come over from Italy. I would be the first in the country to own one.

Looks OK to me. I'm seriously considering taking my back box off to see what that's like, with a view to putting a straight-thru bit of pipe on instead.

Rage
13-02-2003, 10:26
Isn't that gonna be VERY loud.

Fen
13-02-2003, 10:30
We'll see. If it is then I won't do it. My guess is that the cat makes the most difference to the noise and I don't intend to touch that.

Rage
13-02-2003, 10:37
How about back pressure is that not an issue as well ?

Sure the supersprint doesn't look like it will offer much in that department either but it must offer something.

Fen
13-02-2003, 10:39
You mean a minimum back pressure requirement?

I don't know. Again I'm assuming that the cat will offer the most back pressure and unless it's really restrictive the bb won't make much difference.

This is all based on mik's 'mufflerectomy' that he's read about on tdiclub.

Keep me informed on how it goes. I think I'll take the other route but if you get yours done quick and its ok I might not.

Saturday spent on the car again then. the missus will be pleased

The Mk IV Golf has 3 silencer boxes, so replacement of the 3rd with a "bit of pipe" doesn't make you sound like a JCB.

Haven't had my car up on the ramps yet...so no idea how many I've got  Suspect 3 though.....

If you're really set on a new back box but aren't going for a full (and therfore properly "flowed" system) then you might be better going to a stainless exhaust fabricator.

Most are happy to "copy" your existing bits (they may already have dimensions) but use larger bore pipe, and less restrictive back box design. Added advantage is you can hand-pick your exit pipe diameter / style / number of pipes.

Folks like Hayward & Scott will do this (but probably expensive), RML exhausts in Prestwick Scotland (not ideal for you, but gives you an idea of what is possible) are very good and cheap. Colleague got a full 506 "Marine Grade" stainless system for his Merc 190 Cosworth 2.5 16 for only £550 with his choice of exits. System had twin pipes from manifold all the way to exit. Std mild steel item from merc was £920.

I can get 'Powerflo' made in Exeter if I want. I want to hear it with no bb first tho...

hopefully as much of a saving as on the Merc...;)

Sounds like the best idea to me mate :)

I keep planning to do the same...never got round to it yet though! :(

Aparently you gain more rumble, and lose a bit of the clatter.....which sounds perfect. I've always argued that the TDI sounds better as it's extended towards it's (lower) redline than the 1.8T petrol lump, but most won't accept it

Since we like to thead hijack and tangentialise in here ;) I've been arguing the points you made (very well sir) on SE for about the last 2.5 years or so. Didn't want to get involved due to the "history" ~ lots of trolling & bad blood when SE was launched made it not much fun in here! :(

Looks good Rage. Not sure if you'll be able to gain much though???

You'll be surprised as to how quiet the car will still be without the rear box on. This happened to me on the mk3 golf tdi, it rusted and fell off. I drove for a week before having it relaced.

Still feel that the best possible gain would come from replacing the center section + removing the cat.

Mostly about petrol cars, but I guess it's basically the samr for the TDI?

interesting article, but I would be surprised if a significant amount of fuel would pass straight out of the exhaust valve as the valves overlap. On a diesel engine, the fuel isnt injected on the intake stroke, but at the end of the compression stroke so you certainly wouldnt lose any fuel in this way - I would have thought the less backpressure the better on a diesel engine?

Stopped by my local seat dealer (getting things ready for Mr. REVO):D
Had the chance to drive a '98 ibiza tdi 110 that was getting fitted with a custom made 3" exhaust. To my surprise, the exhaust made a difference!:D
LetThe time diffs see, how to explain the difference??????
Well basically the time difference between the turbo starting boost to full boost was alot shorter (boost delay I guess). I wouldn't say the difference was dramatic, but definitely noticeaable.

Shit, I must learn to never ever go to a tuning shop or my local dealer on Saturday ever again. :p

My thoughts:

- Keep the cat (2-3 bhp gain max) and do a straight (no mufflers) 2.5" cat-back system. Maybe 5-8bhp gain is possible with this setup on a tuned Ibiza. It“s definetely louder than stock but bearable. ;)
This would be my number 1 choice.

- Custom larger downpipe (without cat) and straight 2.5" system with only a final smallish muffler or ressonator to cut a bit the noise/ressonance. 10bhp gain should be possible on a tuned TDI130.

Any tryers? :D
I should do some experiecing on this subject on my partner“s Ibiza TDI130 soon. Next week we“ll also try a few intake solutions on our rolling road.

I'm gonna talk to Powerflow tomorrow then...

You think 2.5" is enough?

m0rk
16-02-2003, 21:06
keep the old one & make sure they don't break it just incase you're lucky enough to get the !powerflow resonating"

Fen
16-02-2003, 21:08
A mate had one on a Corolla GTi and they replaced his bb with a different one FOC when he took it back ('cos it boomed). They seem pretty decent, in Exeter at least.

16-02-2003, 21:11
ahh, back boxes are good - it's the centres that are bad - many resonate at motorway revs..

good luck

But WTF is Powerflow? Some custom muffler shop in the UK? I really will not be able to get an exhaust anytime soon, but when I do I'll be looking for something with close to stock sound.

Fen

Some custom muffler shop in the UK

AFAIK pretty much, yep.

Aren't you guys going to upgrade the brakes?

I know you guys already run pretty good size brakes, but with all those mods, aren't the brakes starting to become your weakest link? I would think that Fen in particular would want better braking.

Rage

The brakes on the new beezer are excellent and I've got no plans to change them. I'm on the maintenance plan anyway, so when they wear down SEAT replace them.

Fen
17-02-2003, 07:47
The only problem I've had with the brakes is that the ABS is a bit over keen sometimes.

There was me thinking they lack initial bite. I did have Group N spec discs & pads + uprated fluid & hoses on the Scoob though. Only came close to fadding them on on the road once :D

prc
17-02-2003, 13:43
I did check the tech specs on the beeza. Suprised to see you guys runing 288mm up front & 232mm rear, which is exactly the same my car was running OE. Since I've got 300kg more (not including me of course;) ), I can understand why you guys aren't to worried about it.
Even with my setup, I have experienced a good amount fade once or twice (when really pushing it).
Should be corrected with a set of pagid FR (as soon as the damn OE pads wear down).

Back on topic... :D

2.5" cat-back Powerflow being fitted on Saturday morning... £240 all in.

Choice of tailpipe; I'm thinking 3.5 or 4" oval, inner rolled with a slant cut. ) Whadda ya think (click 'show me the tailpipes')? (http://www.powerflow.uk.com/products.html#) What's on the Leon R (I know it's a single oval)?

Go for the upswept letterbox to inflict max diesel dispertion on other cars.

Make that twin upswept letterboxes.

yep. :D

Take out both headlights of the cupra thats trying to keep up.

Edit: how good is an induction kit when clogged with diesel ?

edit2 : Now I've gotta phone powerflow about getting one done for mine. Damn you for making me spend money. ;) :)

Edit3: Booked in for the 28th. Southampton branch.

Fen

It's gotta be good for at least 0.6 bhp and 0.1 lb/ft...

What tailpipe are you having?

Rage
17-02-2003, 14:52
I have no idea. I just booked the ramp and said what car its for. We decided it was best to just get down there and see what looks good. :)

Apparently twin upswept letterboxes is not an option due to the wheel well getting in the way.

I mentioned it to Dormouse. He said that SPT (tm) might be persuaded to look into diesel tech.

I'll probably speak to him again tonight in #seatcupra.net

Fen
17-02-2003, 15:09
No fair discussing it in chat; I get enough stick from the missus about the time I spend on the forum as it is...

Clearly SPT needs to embrace the smelly ones amongst us ASAP...

This is something I'm looking to do as well. Want it for both the upper and lower part of grill/bumper.
