I just bought the CK3000 from expansys.com - suddenly dropped in price and cheaper than the HCB-30. I'm wondering about fitting for my Leon - what's the best idea... I'd like to fit it myself if I could - anyone know where the various parts go - do I need to remove my dash, or just the bit under the steering wheel? How does the stereo come out? etc...

Alternatively, where would you recommend to get it fitted, and roughly how much am I looking at?

Cheers

Hi mate

For a quick guide on how to remove the dash below the steering wheel see www.icecavern.co.uk then click how to....

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with the parrot kit I have a nokia cark 112 which I mounted under the tray behind the gear stick and picked up the power from an adaptor lead from the head unit...

not sure if there is any guides on remvoeing the head unit without the tool around but I used to cut an old credit card into a strip and poke it in the holes then bend them out and the head unit pops out...

Where are you based??

Cheers for the help mate

So what's the deal - do I put the black box somewhere in the cavity underneath the steering wheel (after I've taken the cover off as shown on icecavern)?

Also, if I take the head unit out then is the wire easily thread from there to the underneath of the wheel? And power from around the head unit?

Also I think the mic is easily thread from underneath the wheel but not so sure about the keyboard control..

Cheers

I may be wrong but I don't think you can fit the black box in there, I believe Amethyst tried that and it wasn't quite enough. He may have been talking about my amp though. I never saw it fitted.

My push button thingy is behind the indicator stalk coming out from between the two parts of the dash. The microphone goes up the inside of the trim on the A pillar (near the wing mirrors) up under the roof trim (take the sun visor out and pull it through) and out from next to the interior light.

I'd budget for 1-1.5 hours labour if you are going to get someone to fit it, I'd agree a price first if I was you.

So whereabouts can the black box go if it doesn't go under the wheel? I haven't got round to that bit yet, still trying to work out how to get the head unit out!! Tried the credit card strips - can feel some sort of bendy/spring catch being pushed when I slide the card into the slots but the unit doesn't budge....... :(

There is sooo much room in that area under the steering you would not beleive!:D I chose not to mount mine there to minimise the chances off the bluetooth transmitter affecting any in car systems.. Its not likely at all to happen but Im just a worrier well that and I couldnt find anywhere to screw it to under there!:o so mine is in the cavity behind the gear stick under that tray...

Its easy to thread wires from the back of the head unit once it is removed to the cavity behind the steering wheel once that panel is removed! you can see straight through in fact!:D

I have mounted my button to the left of the climate controls which is where it felt right for me but it is personal choice!

My mic is up by the interior lightwith the wire thread as djawol described!

When I got round to doing the installation fully yesturday I decided not to picy up the power from the back of the head unit due to the adaptor cable I had crushing the soft pipe going to the interior temp sensor which would have lead to a mis opperation of the climate system. NOTE this was only due to my particular adaptor!

I've got a few pics I'll post up later and I know the above may not be that clear:( Let us know how you get on mate and just shout if you need any more info!!

I'll try and do some kinda guide and whack it up on ice cavern along with a review of the cark 112 if you fancy doing one for the parrot??

Thanks for your help mate, I'm gonna take off the dash under the wheel in a bit and check it out.

However, I still can't get the head unit out - any further tips as to how to do this?

Also, how does the panel by the gear stick come out then?

Cheers

Right okies... you have a couple of options! you can mount it under the steering wheel bit if you can find somewhere to atach it to.. or you can mount it under the tray behind the gearstick!

To get it in there if you look down the sides of the plastic hat the gear stick mounts on in the drivers and passengers footwells you will see two oval shaped blanking plates on each side... prise these out with a small screw driver take your time so as not to sscratch it up!!

Then remove the front two with a small socket sorry cant remember the size and the two nearest the seats with a torx bit. Then you can lift this big bit of plastic up and down enuff to get the box underneath!!!

The other alternative is to mount it behind the glovebox. If you remove the CD changer you can reach round behind the box to mount it there! my old cark 91 was mounted there in my last cupra! (see ice cavern for a guide to doing the CD changer)

as for removing the head unit taper the ends of the card down to a point! then put them in and pull the card out to the sides to make a V with the point of the V inside the head unti if you see what I mean! get a mate to put his fingers into the cassette solt and pull while your doing this... Should work but it might take a bit!

Where do you live mate? I have removal tools you could borrow if your local!:D

Once I've got the head unit out then I'll take the dash off and work out whether I can fit it in there. Don't suppose there's any point until I've got the head unit out though!

I live in Ipswich - whereabouts are you? Cheers

Hey..

Thanks for the pictures.. I just got back in after completing the installation - only took a few hours !!

Got the head unit out in the end, cheers.. Took the dash below the wheel off but it seemed to be firmly stuck around the area with the light switch (couldn't get anywhere near the connectors) and I couldn't shift it - and it wasn't that it was catching on the bonnet release.... Anyway, managed to thread the kit in whilst it was half hanging off and didn't need any more than that.. Got the power from behind the head unit and threaded the buttons out from the dash by the indicator stalk.. all in all a decent job and glad I avoided paying for it...

Now all I have to do is configure the damn thing so it works. ;)

Thanks again for the help

Glad it works!!:D

Get some pictures up and write a review:D:D:D

DOH about the light switch:( It is a bit tight but I managed to get me hands in there!:D Was it fouling on the fuse box bit?? or was it stuck around the the u clip to the right of the stweering column?? Did the bottom plastic not come away from the dash at all or did it come away a lil bit but not dfar enuff to get hte conectors off??

Where did you mount the unit in the end??:D

You can take the light switch out by pushing the turny knob in and twisting it to the right then pulling.... for future reference!:D

Glad its sorted!!:D:D:

I'll take some pictures later and write a review when I get the chance..

The dash was fowling around the fuse box area, it just seemed jammed on something and I couldn't see what.. anyway!

I didn't even mount the unit, just slipped it under the steering wheel, bunched up the wires and closed the dash back up - not very professional but the same result!

Update: I can't get the bloody thing to work!! It's all powered up and I have the automated voice coming through my stereo etc with the muting.. However, the mic doesn't seem to be working - I can't record any voice commands (keep getting 'speak louder') and if I manually dial then the person on the other end can't hear me!

I'm wondering whether the mic lead has become detached from the control box somehow - can't think of anything else it could be, i think i have everything configured right.

Went for a drive before and there is also a slight rattle - serves me right for just plonking it in there and not mounting it properly. If I can't work out how to get it sorted then I guess next weekend I'll have the dash off again to a. check the mic lead and b. fix the control box down so it doesn't rattle

:( :( :(

mm yeah could be a dodgy mic as well check it out mate!!:D

I might have also missed a screw off or somehting on the guide on ice cavern:o

let us know how it goes!!:D

Just got my voice commands working! but they are a function of the phone and not the car kit for me!:D

Hey

Just finished sorting out the handsfree! I took the panel below the wheel off to check the connection to find that it was fine.. I tested the unit with another mic and it worked.. I stripped out the mic from the car and tested it with my comp.. Identified a loose connection. Threaded it back into the car, closed the panel back up and hey presto!

This time I got the panel off completely and stuck the control box down and tidied the wires up. Was a complete bitch to get the panel back on though, and I'm not convinced I've got it right although it looks right - one of the screw holes doesn't line up, but it's all sturdy so I've just left it..

The fact that the voice control is a function of the kit rather than the phone is probably the worse thing about the Parrot in my opinion.. Unless I'm missing something somewhere!

Anyroad - cheers!

James
