By the time I return from my trip to manchester this weekend, my Leon Cupra will have done about 1000 miles....

I was thinking of changing the oil around this time, but wondered if this was too soon ?? Maybe the car has the special running-in oil and needs a few thousand more miles ???(Although I can't imagine this is the case with a 10,000 miles dealer oil change)

If I can change the oil now, do I have to go through all the malarky involved with a TDI oil change such as paper filters and such - is it just a simple case of Oil, Filter & sump plug washer ??

Out of curiousity I gave my 3 nearest dealers a ring to see what they charge for just an oil change :

Reading:
about £62 inc. Using Shell Helix semi-synthetic
(inquired about sythentic, told about 20 quid more, WASN'T warned off running synthetic at such low mileage)

Camberley:
About £56 inc, Using 'VW semi-synthetic' (I think he mentioned Comma brand), recommended using Fully synthetic, about £20 more.

Windsor:
About £83 inc, Using Shell Helix Semi
Only service guy who asked for chassis #, saying there were 2 types of oil filter for cupra.
Warned about changing oil, in case running-in oil was in engine, recommended waiting till at least 3000 miles.
Warned about not using Fully Synthetic until at least 10,000 miles.

So Amethyst Guys, can you give any definative answers to the oils questions ??

Recommended first change,
When/If to go from semi - to fully ?
What is involved in oil change (I intend to do the interim 5k oil changes myself if poss)

Phew !! Need a beer now ....

Officially no change required until 10k or 12 months.

We would recommend 5k intervals.

Use of fully synthetic oil is your choice but cost puts a lot of people off.

We use castrol magnatex as it leaves a coating of oil on all surfaces when engine off and reduces engine wear on initial start up.

We would charge £50.00 for an oil and filter change with magnatex or £65.00 with synthetic oil.

Sorry to but in on a Cupra Oil thread but....
My car is due for it's 10k service soon and I have also been quoted £60 for Shell Helix Diesel Plus 10W-40. Does anyone know what synthetic oil Shell do for the diesel? They list Helix Ultra 5W-30 but I'm not sure that this is ok?

Swinny,
If you don't mind me asking, do you use or recommend a fully synth oil for the TDi?

Cheers,

SWINNY:

Would you see a problem in doing a change at around 1000 miles ??
What parts are needed for change (I'd love to bring my business your way, especially at those prices, but I'd never get the time to get over to you) ??

DEAN:

As far as I know, there is only ONE Shell Helix Ultra, and according to website/bottle, it can be used in both Petrol and Diesel

I would have thought that 5W30 would be OK for a TDI, I was told not to go as thin as 0W30 (Mobil 1) in my old 306 Dturbo

In reply to both questions :-

An oil change at 1000 miles is OK and you will need the oil, a filter and a sump plug washer.

With reference to the diesel we use the sma e oil in both petol and diesel cars EXCEPT for cars with PD type engines as in Arosa and Alhambra

Cheers Graham,

Would you advise waiting till 10,000 b4 going fully synthetic, or slip it it at 5000 (oh err missus)
