View Full Version : Exhausted

Powerflow fitted this morning (3 1/2 hours  )

I've only driven home in it but initial impressions are of better throttle response that made it feel quicker in the lower gears. It may rev more freely, but it's too soon to say.

I went for 50mm from the downpipe back with an understated 3 1/2" oval tailpipe and an especially naughty 18" section under the gearstick area (must remember: the cat in the bin liner is to be kept in the garage, NOT drowned...)

Noise-wise you can hardly hear it; you may want to go with just a back-box, Simon.

£325 all in with the decat (includes modifying the cat so it just clamps back in for those pesky MoT testers...

An exhaust earlier today...

Sorry the car is so dirty, but I have a big hammer and a hideous fireplace that need to get better acquainted...

Looks nice fen.

But why the ***k did it take 3.5hrs to fit?

Fen

It's all bends & welds and the cat has to be taken out, have ends welded on and then be refitted, then finally taken out and straight through section put in in place.

Still seems like a long time tho...

2 weeks worth of honest road muck. It'll get washed again before the Haynes meet.

I should have bought a Lazuli blue car like the wife's Mk2. It hasn't been washed since it was MoT's in September and it gets used daily - honestly!

IMO dark grey is best. Black & yellow are the worst colors. This pic is o my car 1 day after I washed it:(

If I'd taken a piccy the day before the RR day I wouldn't have had to blank the reg number :)

Looking at the rear of my dirt wagon. I can get a pretty good idea of what it might look like in black.

Same here, although mine was cleaned on Thursday and not used for a day! MK4 rear ends are real dirt traps!

Anyway back on topic, I like that exhaust, a LOT!

Fen
25-02-2003, 13:42
I've only been to the office and back, but the exhaust has made lots of difference. I think it does make a bit of noise outside as well, although probably nobody else can hear it.

Simon: IDAS :dunno:

Are you being decatted on Friday?

Can you be more specific. 10 -20% more?

Fen
25-02-2003, 15:43
Since Revo-ing the engine has a bit of a growl on decent throttle openings at 2,500 - 4,000 rpm or so. Now I think that growl is audible behind me as well as through the bulkhead. At idle it still sounds like farm machinery.

Thanks!
I guess I'll just leave it as is. Well, maybe I'll be looking at some roofing material to dampen the sound.?

Was thinking about it. Has it made much difference to the performance ?

Fen
25-02-2003, 18:41
I don't know how much difference the decat has made in itself. The car feels more responsive now, but I haven't driven it with the cat in place and the rest of the Powerflow.

IDAS

I would think that you get more from removing the CAT then the rest of the exhaust.

WTF is IDAS.
From Rage's avatar I'd guess it some new recipe or a hamburger helper:D

Fen

There's more to it than that. I've just read all this shite http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14206&perpage=40&highlight=idas&pagenumber=3 and it doen't even explain it

Ok I left home at 6:45. To get down to southampton nice and early before the morning rush to be on the doorstep when they arrived.

Anyway it took many many hours, but they did a bang up A1 job and it sounds good looks great and I'm well pleased.

pics to follow.

I had a feeling the pussy was endangered.

How much difference do you think it's made?

Rage
01-03-2003, 10:20
Throttle response must have improved cos I'm not pushing the car anywhere near as hard as I used to. A number of times on the way home last night I found myself doing 90+ without really trying. It feels better all round. I'm gonna take it out again in a minute and have a proper go.

Fen
01-03-2003, 10:29
That pretty much agrees with what I thought then. Well worth doing.

Fen

Simon,

Just noticed: new badges. What have you got?

Rage
01-03-2003, 13:02
moved the IBIZA badge so its positioned under the boot handle. VW TDI badge and a Renault sport badge where the ibiza TDi badge used to go.

What is the gain with a de-cat system ?

Rage

I have no idea. They had no rollers at the place I took it to. Definite improvement though and it sounds sweet.

Mmmm, I like the TDi Sport badges but I'm not so sure about the repositioning of the 'IBIZA'. The Exhaust looks very sweet definitely prefer it to Fen's single.

Oh and get your number plate cleaned it's discusting. :D

Exhaust loooks good, but you might have atleast centred the Ibiza badge with the rear handle!!

Not sure about the other changes but the car looks fab..Not as good as my soon to be Platinum Grey but nice
:D

Whats the spec on the exhaust, cost fitting time make etc. You have prob already said somewhere, just i am a bit slow like that.

p.s. has anyone seen my thread on Alternatives to Revo??

Rage
01-03-2003, 23:36
Cost me £400 and took bloody ages. The garage was run by 2 guys
1 did the welding and the other the pipe bending. It would have taken 3-4 hours of uninterupted work but people kept coming in wanting tyres and the welding guy did the tyres so most of the day was spent waiting for the welding guy to finish.

so It actually took 6.5 hours. During which time they turned away some guy with a civic type R who came to have a dusbin ( big exit pipe) welded to the back of his car.

Tried to centre the Ibiza badge first off but the I in the middle looked weird when it wasn't in the centre of the handle so I settled for it being a bit heavy to the right and worked out from the middle.

As for the exhaust spec its a 2.25 inch powerflow de-cat jobby.

not seen your thread yet but I'm about to go hunting for it.

Heard that the gain of de-cat system is about 10hp

RB5> Where do you live ? Is it possible to buy your decat-system ?
the things we do is that we exchange with my standard system + £

waiting for a reponse, I think I but my bitza on a ferry and I'm coming for the engine tuning

Fen
02-03-2003, 21:41
I live in the far south west of England.

Where are you getting your Revo done? You could probably have your own Powerflow system made up while you're over because they have dealers all over. Check their website (http://www.powerflow.uk.com/) but you'd have to book it in advance since mine took 3.5 hours and Simon's 6 hours.

I don't really want to sell mine because I'm happy to keep my car if I don't get a buyer and I've also got a bit cut out of my rear valance that would look bad with a standard system.

If you feel you want somebody over here to help arrange things with Powerflow then I'll help if I can.

ok I understand RB5, so I try to buy a new one !

no problem with the decat-system about the lambda probe ?

Fen
02-03-2003, 22:00
From what I know they weld in a collett for the llambda probe in the downpipe. They then cut down and weld flanges on the section with the cat and make up the rest of the system. Finally they make up a straight section (about 45cm) that slots in to replace the cat and you take the cat itself away in a bag.

Does that sound about right Simon?

If you get your own made then you can choose the tailpipe and also maybe have more noise than me if you want.

Actually, you're car wouldn't be able to use my system because it doesn't have a modification for the llambda probe.
