View Full Version : enlighten me flapper!!
flapper, i was talking to a bloke down at one of my local motorstores and was looking to buy 100w bulbs, he said that they would melt the lenses (or was it reflectors), anyway, i was going to put em in both my dipped and full beam fitments, is the melting bit true, i thought the reflector bits would be made of something better than shiney silver plastic /naive mode off, please enLIGHTen me!! Hehe geddit?
Brendy - don't know about melting the lenses but the wiring, fuses and relays probably ain't up to it. The standard bulbs are 55W, so you're almost doubling the power and hence doubling the current. If you're thinking of doing it, you really should at least run in some chunkier cables and fit some heftier relays so you don't burn out the wiring or contacts or it could all go a bit . I looked into doing this myself as the dipped beam is sh*te but decided that xenon bulbs would be easier (getting them done tomoz...). Something else to ber in mind (or not given your tyres), dunno about in Ireland, but UK law is a little sketchy about whether 100W bulbs are strictly legal or not for road use, some say >100W, some say >=100W...
got the philips xenon vision plus jobbies instead a few months ago, no feckin better than the standard ones!! the law is the same throughout britain so its the same here in northern ireland, take it you read the thread on tyres ;)
i have heard of PLASTIC lenses being melted yeah , but for yours it'll be the wiring to look out for , my own car is running , coated 90/130's , on test of course ,look GREAT , but how long before  MELTDOWN:devil: remains to be seen
so what xenon bulbs are the best bet for extra light? and also can they be bought in motor factors or would they be mail order?, perhaps you sell em flapper!!
As i said in earlier post i got the philips vision plus, but they are no different than my crappy standard ones before.
for extra light you'll need a POD with 4 PIAA lamps in it , CALL ME i know where there is one ;)
they filter the light to a purer colour , mind you the way you drive id reccomend a roof bar full of spots too :D
I had 90/130W bulbs in 3 Impreza Turbos, and over 7.5 years had no probs with wiring melting or anything else. Coverage was still pretty lousy though, as I guess the increased output still couldn't make up for poor design. The Leon's much better, even with std bulbs in.
Are the bulbs really as difficult to replace in a Leon as I've heard?
on the leon they are not so hard , beeza is a real knuckle scraper
all ok as long as sidelight pops out if not its a long nose plier jobbie :(
Thanks for that.
You had any new music recommended from your friend in the USA recently? You checked out The Hives yet? Great band from Sweden - nothing like ABBA or bloody Volvos!
you know where you can get a 4 lamp pod??? - is that the bonnet one? - 'cos i've been looking at getting one for my cordy, how much are they? - cheapest i've seen is 350GBP.
yea flapper, what do they look like fitted to an ordinary road going cordy, gimme pics and stuff!!!
£350 is about the right price ive been seeing too
still , style / fashion does cost i suppose :(
Have a look at this, not graphically excellent, but gives an idea of what the pod would look like;
hehe , you should have done some of trhe humma ha a humma a ha a humma a a a a wibble wobble wibble wobble, do you know what it is yet?? Rolfy style!! maybe a bit ott for the normal day to day driving as i also use my car for work purposes ! still nice effort scotty!
my bulbs ,that i've had from when i bought the car say not legal in the uk on them and i often get flashed at night (i've reported it)but mine is the h4 old variety i think they are well over 50w
art was never my strongpoint! for my next project I may do a nice chalk and pastel drawing of a new bodykit.:p
