View Full Version : Altech's Ibiza, Replacement Is Here! Can You Guess What It Is? Pg 33
I've had the car for nearly 6 months and have done a few bits to it,
Here's how it looked when i got it, totally standard.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/DSC00970.jpg
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/DSC00965.jpg
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/DSC00966.jpg
The first mod i did was to paint the calipers. I then wanted 17" alloys as i didn't like the standard wheels. i bought a set of vRS alloys.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/DSC00972.jpg
The wheels were a bit kerbed and badly corroded, seeing as i wanted to do them a custom colour i set about refurbing them. (i can post a thread of how i did it if anyone's interested)
After hours of sanding and painting the 1st colour came out like this!!!,
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/P1000025.jpg
wayyy to purple looking for my liking! so i went for another colour, and after a few coats of laquer they came out like this,
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/P1000032.jpg
Was really pleased with the finish. Let them dry for a week, polished them, took them to get tyres fitted and put them on the car,

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/P1000075.jpg
Something was missing though, o yeaaa, Cupra bumper!!
I've modified the centre grille to allow the same amount of air to the smic as the standard bumper, so after a lot of drilling and filing! from this,
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/P1000051.jpg
to this,

Looks very nice, all work done seems to very high standard well done.
Ooh... :D
Looks good mate!
Well worth the wait, wheels looks smart!
See you are in London - not far from me should come to our southern meet :)
The middle 'S' badge should go black or same colour as wheels to stand out more and the mirrors too :D

My god! All i can say it what you have done on the bumper is fantastic! Cutting out all the honeycomb - it's properly good! I did think about doing that if I got a Cupra bumper but changed plans. Well done!

Looks really well. Cupra bumper makes a big difference. I would be interested to see how you refurbed your wheels as i have a few scuffs id like to repair if i get the chance.
agree with ad lav. Mayb paint the brake calipers aswell?

Cheers for the replies,
Ad Lav - Yeah when i've got the chance i'm going to spray the mirrors gloss black. i quite like the badge as it is, looks like the Seat advertising badge which is what i was going for. Do think it would look a bit more stealthy with a black badge though.
Ibiza 130 tdi - cutting out all the honeycombs took ages! my fingers definitely don't feel the same :(. well worth the effort as the intercooler will work now:funk:

Any future plans?

Looks amazing. I really like it. Its only a little bit high.
I like the red badge. keep it.
Yeah, go black on the badge and wheel coloured mirrors, will look more stealthy :)
Good job though, does look smart, but needs the compulsory lowering ;)
D4V2K1 - plenty of plans for the future, they'll have to wait untill after xmas as it's normally quite an expensive part of the year for me.
Jamin Berry - i'd love to get it slammed on coilovers, but as it is when i go down my drive the splitter is only about 1" away from the ground.
Ad Lav - you reckon wheel coloured mirrors will look better than gloss black?
Have you got a pic of your car with wheel coloured mirrors?
Pic below is similar to how FR's look but darker - they are now gloss/shiny though as I had them laquered...
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r301/LAV170/P1070864.jpg
Hmmm...just had a play on microsoft paint... i've got some paint left over from doing the wheels, might aswell give it a go..won't cost me anything lol
The bit surrounding my de-badged grill is wheel colour too :)
Trust me, it'll look the bee's knee's! :D
Really got to paint the bits behind my grills/fog lights black!

Nice work, wheels are tidy. you could still get coilovers mate, but just not take them all the way down.
How was the 's' badge painted? Airfix paint?? Think i might do it to mine as i have a red car!

*shameless plug* there's a new VAG site, see my sig, just got up and running, if you're from london then join up :D *shameless plug over*
the front end looks realy nice, quite aggressive too
Thanks for the replies,
The badge was really easy to do. I'd had the idea of doing it for ages, but only got round to it whilst changing the bumper.
All i did was remove the centre grille from the bumper and pop out the 's' badge. The actual bits i painted red are attached to the grille and not to the chrome badge. The only red paint i had hanging around was the paint that i used to do my brake callipers, Might not be the most suitable paint but it did the job. 2 coats with a touch up brush and it was done.

Nice job of the splitter! Defiantely get it lower though, you can drive around problems with clearance. Im after some centre caps to, were they seat ones or home made?
I was looking for a while for the centre caps. They are origional Seat parts but i got them of ebay for 4 quid brand new!
I think you can probably get them from a dealer as they look the same as the Cupra alloy centre caps. They are 55mm.
ph2858 - the splitter and front bumper is all thanks to Guiness, as i bought it off him after he wrote off his car.

Yeh if that was me I would lower it, drive or no drive!! Looks good! What tools did you use to paint your alloys? They look really good!
Definatly an improvement! Keep her going in the right direction!! [B)]
And to all looking for centre caps: I have seen alot of them going on eBay..! It is the way forward I'm tellin ya! :funk:
Cheers Josh, I'll definitly be getting it lowered in the new year, sod the drive!!
I'll put up a thread of how i did my wheels soon. The only power tool i used was a drill and flap wheel to grind down the old paint. Most of it was hard work using my hands and plenty of sandpaper!
I used aerosol cans to spray the wheels.

Looks so good I thought it must have been a spray gun at least! How the f**k did you manage that!? Fancy doing mine??
Be interesting to see how they hold out to the elements.
It was actually quite easy. Wheels and other small parts are the only times i'd use aerosols as they're crap for doing pannels and stuff.
Not really the best time of year to put new wheels on, but i suppose it'll be a good test. I sprayed on a few coats of laquer so they should be ok.
Looks minted mate.
Wheels are smart. And the bumper is perfect.
Cheers a waugh, wanna get mine slammed like yours now!

Altech - do you have the receipt for your centre caps still? I need the part number so I can get some for my Tavvy wheels too. :) Cheers! :D
Cheers Guinness. Im really pleased with the front end now, can't stop looking at it!! Just need to get the rear end sorted out.
How's your car comming along? you got any pics up yet?
Ibiza 130 - i bought them off ebay so didn't get a invoice. I would pop one off and give you the number, but i don't want to risk chipping the paint!
I'm sure if you go into Seat and ask for the ibiza cupra centre caps (which i think are what i have?) they'll know what you mean. Just make sure they're 55mm. Or you could get lucky and get a bargain of ebay like me :D

That's ok bud! :) I got my old man to call our local SEAT dealer and they said that the wheel centres changed size every year! Yours obviously fit fine at 55m? Not loose or anything?
look forward to seeing them Guinness, what exhaust have you gone for?
Ibiza 130 - Yep 55mm fit nicely, popped in firmly. Just make sure when you're spraying them that you don't let too much paint build up around there, otherwise they won't fit. Measure your wheel centre just to be on the safe side

why a half decent price?
only place to get them is from Seat itself for that set price. people cant sell any cheaper unless their 2nd hand :wtf:
Yeah, can only get them from Seat directly unless second hand. They're not too expensive for what they are, its the painting that adds to the price.
Cheers for the comments:).

like this car alot, your are the first one with the cupra bumper mod good work, everyone will copy you now! Good info on the centre caps too I will need some to go with the same wheels as you so good to know the exact size, seems to be lots off sizes except 55mm on ebay typical!
Looks superd Altech - Some nice suttle touches here and there, I love the splitter, that reminds me need to get mine on!. as said - lowered and jobs a good un' ;)
Cheers for the comments! I really need to do a few more mods so i can put up more pics!
Romeoisgraham - I really want to get coilovers but wouldn't be able to slam it due to my driveway etc. Might just get them to improve the ride quality as it's quite harsh at the moment.:(
aimez - The centre caps do pop up on ebay now and then, but i've heard that they're pricey from Seat. Watch out on ebay for stickers that are advertised as centre caps:lol:.
diss 50 - Defo get the splitter on! make sure you use spacers to space the middle part as it looks funny otherwise. I used bits of copper pipe painted black!

Have you got a Cupra, or have you replaced your FR bumper with a Cupra item?
urm, i had a standard 1.2 bumper on t first, but then i changed it to a cupra bumper[B)]
Cheers for the comment Amit K.
I used the origional foglights that were fitted to my pre facelift bumper as they're a direct replacment for the cupra bumper. If your standard 1.2 bumper didn't have fogs then i'm sure you would be able to get some from a scrapyard or somewhere similar. Mabye even ask around on here to see if anyone has any going spare. Ebay might have some too.

yh mate i really need some at the moment, how much you want for them mate, here take my msn add, bad_boy_4u2nv@hotmail.com cheers
I have a new FR bumper and the old fogs only fit the Cupra and pre-facelifts!
Oh I see, I am after a new FR bumper so I will be needing new fogs as well. The new FR bumper is different to the facelift standard bumper isn't it?
Not really, the grills and inserts are... its the rear bumpers that are different, except the FR and Cupra, they are the same :)
so that would mean that the cupra fog lights are 1 of a kind? i am interested in them and i need to be sure that they are the right ones for my cupra bumper, cheers, as i said mate feel free to add me on msn.:D
Pre-Facelift Bumper and all Cupra bumpers use the same fogs.
Facelift bumpers use different fogs.
:)
I really like the Vrs rims!
Thanks Georgel, hopefully the wheels will have a bit of red on them soon. Watch this space!

Looks well mate
Liking the red badge thinking of doing it myself now...
that bumoer looks good mate, how long did it take you to file it and that?
Firstly I drilled out as much plastic as I could using different sized drill bits, that took about 20 minutes. The much harder part was the filing which took about 2 hours all together! I didn’t do it all in one go as my hands got knackered after 20 mins!
A much easier way is to use a dremmel multi. I thought about buying one to do the job but thought it was a bit of a waste just using it once. I’ve since found a much cheaper tool made by Rotacraft which would be perfect for the job.

I haven't updated this thread for a while, I've not really done too much but here goes
- Fitted PD160 Air intake and Green panel filter. Enlarged the adaptor to allow more air flow. I noticed a slight difference, acceleration felt smoother and the turbo now hisses louder :D
- Sprayed the wing mirrors gloss black
Before

After
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/P1000332.jpg
- Fitted a vRS ARB, bushes and Cupra wishbone bushes. Big change noticed, no more annoying knocking and the car feels much more solid on the road.
- Colour coded the main front centre grille to match the rest of the cupra grilles. Re-painted the red parts and sprayed the badge and surround the same colour as the wheels.

That quote is from earlier on in this thread... i had loads of people asking me how i did it! I redesigned the badge and grille recently and painted the red bits with proper spray paint. I have to say thou that the calliper paint was much easier to use as it's thicker than normal paint.

i payed about £280 ish all in for bumper and painting, but that was getting it at cost prices not retail, so a dont know how much more your lookin at
wazb – No I haven’t lowered my car yet. The handling isn’t too bad actually, as the rolling radius is the same due to my 17” having a lower profile tyre than the 16”.
I bought my Cupra bumper off a member on here for £200 painted as well! From Seat I think your looking at about £220 for the bumper primed and the new grilles. Painting will vary from £75 to about £150.
vRS ARB and bushes cost me £58 from Skoda and the Cupra wishbone bushes were £8 each.
cool thanks for the info, will proberly get 16" but defiently made up my made about the colour of the alloys love that dark grey, i aslo have a lunay grey ibiza, also how much did it cost to fit the bushes, this mechancic gave me a quote of £350.
altech you got part nos for those bits>?
Any one know where i can buy wheels with a similer colour? been searching for a while and cant find any.
mixupz –
6LL 407 183 Cupra front wishbone rear bush x2
6Q0 411 305 AC ARB kit from Skoda. I think it includes the bushes.
wazb- I re-sprayed mine that colour as they were originally silver. You should however be able to find some a similar colour. Have you looked at Kei alloys?
Also have a look at this site
http://shop.street-racers.co.uk/default.php?cPath=1
Loads of choice and the prices aren’t bad either.
Thanks, was wondering would these wheels fit?
http://shop.street-racers.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=1_3895_5866&products_id=1034001
Nope...you'll need 5x100. I'm sure Kei do the force 10s in a 5x100 fitment thou.
Personally the smallest i'd go would be 16". If your budget can stretch to it defo go for 17" you won't regret it :)
i would get 17" but i live in an area with alot of speed bumps, and i dont want to be slowing down to a snails pace every time i want to get over them.

gatman - my sticker is also damaged and i can't really read it....don't want to give you a wrong number! I'm sure if you get in touch with your local dealer they'll be able to give you your code.
cupraajy - your car looks nice...don't see too many cupras in yellow
@Altech
I'm from holland and I were sent to your topic about the smic cooling problem with a Cupra Front. In this forum I read that you've done some loging after you've cleared the honeycomb grill of the cupra front. Are those results still posted somewhere on this forum? Where they positive or could I better stick to the original FR front?
I've never actually done any loging. I just measured the standard bumper grille and compared it to my modified Cupra grille and worked out that the same amount of air, if not more, will pass to the smic.
I've driven the car for 2 hours on the motorway in about 29 degrees Celsius and never had any problems with heat soak.
Come to the London meet Altech!!!! :D
I think I'll keep it by his images ;)

OK Thnx! Then I will try the Cupra bumper and do some logging myself. I'm going to get a custem remap to about 220 hp (next wednesday ) so I'll need al the cooling I can get. Right now I still got the FR front so I will do some logging first with the FR bumper on for comparison.
Yesterday I started to cut out the closed honycomb cels. Damn what a crappy job is that if you wan't to do it perfect. Today I stabed a Stanley knife about 1/2 an inch in my thumb when cutting the grill :whistle: And now still I'm only half way there..
Ouch!! :headhurt: Sounds painful!
It took me quite a while to cut out the closed honeycombs, I drilled out as much as I could and then filed down all the rough edges. Another member on here used a belt sander to sand down the back part of the grille that blocks the honeycombs.
With 220 bhp you might want to invest in a fmic as I can't imagine that the small smic would be able to cope.
Come to the London meet Altech!!!! :D
I've got a packed weekend mate...got so much on I doubt i'll even get time to sleep:lol: I'll try and make the next one :)

I don't know if it's a TDI or a 20VT you have, either way if you are going to aim for 220BHP you really should be looking at an FMIC and not sticking with the SMIC.
Also with the FMIC you won't need to worry about bumper design affecting your cooling. :)
We have JD Engineering. The real guru of the 1.8 20vt :)
You can get another chip with him for about € 500,- to about 205 hp, but I'm going to get a custem remap on a dyno for € 750,-. Almost all factory FR's who where getting a custem remap at JD Engineering went to about 220 (some 215) hp. He's monitoring the cooling very well and there isn't even one bad story about this guy on whole the internet. On our Dutch forum almost everybody goes to JD for a remap.
He also is one of the less who limits the torque in first and second gear to keep the car driveable. And he will write the MAF-sensor away with the remap so the damn thing can't get broke anymore and I can get a BOV that will fully blow off all presure.
Other guys on our forum do 0-60 (0-100kph) in 6.4s with a factory FR with a custem remap at JD's.
Tomorrow is my day :D I'll have to drive 5 hours to get to JD but it's worth the ride! I'll post the dyno results the day after.
I haven’t updated this thread for a while so here’s a recent mod.
I needed to replace my rear lights as one of the lenses was cracked and kept fogging up. Also one was slightly scuffed.
I bought a set of the dark style facelift lights off ebay but got messed about by the seller. Eventually after about 5 weeks I got a full refund! I then spotted a set of Cupra rear lights going cheap so I couldn’t help myself and bought them. They're only a year or so old so they still look like new.

Ebay mate. I don't have the part numbers, but there might be some part numbers in the FAQ section. Iirc they're about £180 new from Seat! There are some for sale in the accessories section aswell :)

Lose the rear wiper and get a new rear bumper mate! :)
he has already done that, with a center exhaust. Just waiting for the piccies now!
I’ve been quite busy messing about with the car over the past few weeks.
I bought this Cupra rear bumper off ebay and set about smoothing it and playing with a few ideas for a one off custom exhaust.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd36/Altech_2007/Cuprabumperbefore.jpg
After a load of smoothing I had the bumper re-sprayed. I then fitted it and then came up with some ideas for the exhaust. I like the twin FR style exhaust but I wanted something different. After working out that my idea would be possible I took my car to Styledynamix in Hayes. They were really helpful and agreed that my idea would work. I got my car booked in and went to collect it a few days ago.
Here are a few pics of the old system

When I start up the car the exhaust makes this funny grumble/howl noise which sounds quite cool. The turbo sounds louder too. I still have the standard centre silencer atm so it's not loud at all. Over 3000rpm it sounds more like a petrol now. I'll get rid of the annoying middle silencer soon as it's not as loud as I want it. I'll try n get a vid up aswell

centre pipe for me was 90 quid from styledynamix
Its very different :)
How did you go about smoothing the original cutout? Abit of plasitc welding and fibreglass?
centre pipe for me was 90 quid from styledynamix
Is your a TDI? 90 quid isn't bad but I was thinking of doing it myself. I can get a bit of stainless pipe for about 15 quid n just clamp it in place. I'll see what they say at Styledynamix as they want me to take my car back there for them to take some pics and a vid
Its very different :)
How did you go about smoothing the original cutout? Abit of plasitc welding and fibreglass?
Yup I plastic welded a patch in, fibre glassed it from behind for some strength and then used fibre glass filler to even up the outside
Sound! Need to do mine at some point, im after a traditional tdi look with hidden pipes.....hoping it will be less messy too.
Any progress pics? Take you long to shape it?
It took quite a while to get it right. Completely forgot about progress pics! But here's what I did,
I firstly cut out the exhaust tunnel part and tried to weld in a piece the same size as the cut out. This didn't work so I ended up welding some overlapping plastic strips on the inside, kinda like a skeleton. I then welded the patch to the skeleton and melted all the sides into each other. To make it more rigid and less prone to cracking I fibre glassed the area behind and then evened up the front with fibreglass filler. To finish it off I used a skim of normal body filler.
Painting it was the hard part as you can't buy the colour anywhere. I used the same paint that I used to paint my wheels (hurricane grey) as a base coat. I then lightly dusted metallic silver over the whole piece. The colour match is spot on but it is a bit shiny

The exhaust note sounds more beefy today...I think it's settled in now. It's still not loud enough for my liking so i'm going to chop out the centre silencer n replace it with a straight pipe. I've also cut down my rear number plate and put that on, so the back end looks slightly different now.

Decatting opens up a whole new world of derv noise - it's whether you want the added smell/smoke to go with it or not. I hated the smoke/smell when I got it.....now I love it. You can have so much fun with a smoke shooter... ;) Push bikes being one.....

lol is there a big diff in smell and smoke and can u smell it with the windows shut if u want a calm drive lol? is it eays to replace for MOT
Hmmm.. mine smokes a fair bit as it is...plus it's even more noticeable now with the twin exit.
Bearing in mind that I don't have a backbox now, I think it might be loud enough if i just remove the centre silencer. I'll have another listen to the vid that you put up n see..

lol is there a big diff in smell and smoke and can u smell it with the windows shut if u want a calm drive lol? is it eays to replace for MOT
You dont need a catalyst on a derv for MOT. ;)
And yes it sometimes does smell with the windows up, like if you're sat at lights you can occasionally get a waft or when you go in reverse....but you can only really notice it with the doors open.

I think they seem smokier with straight pipes out the back cos it comes up more, whereas with the tailpipes facing down on the standard systems....it pushes the smoke down and you can't see it as much.
Just take out the centre box for now then....might sound ok. :)

The 'S' isn't actually anthracite, It's the same colour as my wheels...which is Hurricane Grey.
I sprayed the main part of the grille anthracite by firstly spraying the whole grille Hurricane Grey...then after that I lightly dusted over the grille with Nimbus grey. I bought the paint from Halfords.
My car has been a bit neglected and dirty for the past few months :( (I spend 75% of my time at work in the cold, so the last thing that I want to be doing at the weekend is washing my car :p I might treat it this weekend however :))
My mate bought me a HID kit for my 21st, unfortunately it turned out to be a bad kit that glared massively! So we shopped around a he got me a kit from HIDS4U. Here are the results - It's a Pro+ kit with H7R bulbs 8000k

I'm really pleased with them as they look a lot nicer than the halogens and also improve vision at night. I still need to get some LED sidelights to match. Bit of a fiddly job to fit them... had to remove the bumper and headlights to install the kit!
What do you think?

yeh HID sidelights look awsome when starting to get dark, give a mean look, without full xenons on
They look far too blue when warming up, but they look superb when in the 3rd pic. I've always fancied a set of HIDs, I'm just to lazy to get them converted.

Best mod you can do in my opinion! Especially at this time of year... Its not as bad fitting them as some people say either.

They are only blue for about 5 seconds whilst the kit warms up...after that they turn white :)
Awsome thread, just read right through it!!
When you changed from the standard bumper to the cupra did you have to get new fogs or did the old fogs fit into the holes for the cupra bumpers?
Cheers stebbi
I used my origional foglights for the Cupra bumper. They're a direct fit :)
Time for a New Year picture update and some better pics of my R32 style exhaust!
I hadn't washed my car for a few weeks due to the crap weather. The weekend before Christmas was fairly warmish so I decided to give it a good clean and polish. I tried Turtle Wax Ice for the first time and I was very pleased with the results. It's very easy to apply and remove and only took about 20mins to do the whole car. The best bit about TWI is that you can apply it to the bare plastic parts on the car and it brings them up really shiny.
Here are a few before and after pics

I still need to get some LED sidelights but have been put off them recently due to a few members complaining that they don’t last very long. Can anyone recommend some that will last?

Car looking tops mate... But get that rear wiper swapped or removed!
 It does look really bad. I'm not sure whether to get the polo aero one or just to get rid of it completely

You need a wiper this time of year. I think it only looks good removed on a car that has been slammed to its bump stops!

I had the £11.50 ones from HIDS4U and they looked a treat - had them a good few months too and they seemed stable compared to the others I had. :)
Deffo a thumbs up from me.
Polo wiper = win. (Just did that to avoid the filter)
Are you trying to tell me something about the ride height of my car? :p

Cheers mate i'll have a look at the Hids4u sidelights...hopefully the discount code still works!
I'm really happy with the front aero wipers that I fitted a while ago. If the rear is as good i'll defo go for it.
The filter for f t w makes me laugh everytime I read it!

Polo rear is good, but it looks loads better than the older style one! I swapped mine over, one of the first things I did. Wasn't slagging off your ride height... I'm hardly one to comment!

Looks great. Lowering it will finish it off. You know it. Made night and day difference to my car. ;)

All in good time :) I'm going to be doing a few cheaper mods in the next few weeks then hopefully some bigger mods later on this year. I think I might have to visit Will at P torque come the next group buy too ;)

 I still enjoy the standard power as I don't drive my car too much. 130bhp is plenty when you live in London!
There are a lot of very pleased P torqued members and I feel like i'm missing out.

We should try n get a group buy going....saying that P torques prices are really good without a group buy. I think for the PD130 it's £265 all in with before n after dynos! Not sure if it's the same price for the 1.8Ts

Not sure how much cheaper they are with a group buy but I'm sure P-Torque will be up for it! I will have to wait until Spring though as finances are tight at the moment! [:@]

you sound really old saying "130bhp is plenty".
So what if you live in London? Go on a road trip and get your arse outta London! :D
I'm coming to London in mine for a night the end of February. ;)

Haha it does sound quite old manish! Thinking about it I could do with some extra power when i've got a few mates in the car.... n what the hell, the only thing a remap can hurt is my wallet and clutch
What part of London are you coming too?
Looks great, really like the new exhaust, something different.
Just needs to be lowered to finish it off :)
