View Full Version : Oil temps on the PD engine
Just wondering if anyone has an oil temp gauge on a PD engine. I know my 110 ibiza ran good temps (usually less than 120ºC even with the AC running during summer).
I know some of the older cars, especially the 1.9td engine (75hp) ran very high oil temps.
The other question is for Revo tuned crowd :D .
Have you guys lowered oil change intervals? Up to now I've been doing 15000km intervals, which by itself already seems like alot (even though it's every other month:head: ). Should I bring it down to 10000km or maybe even 7500km?
Muchas gracias
Mine tends to sit justy over 100. Simon has seen 120 a couple of times in his recently. I didn't look at Haynes yesterday.
I'm sticking with normal oil changes, but (like you?) I just sit at constant speed most of the time so no more stressful than unchipped on the oil.
I guess your right Fen, my ride to work is 1.5hrs/146km each way, normal cruising about 150km/hr. The summer months worry me a bit though, as the hi temps + AC tend to drop alot of heat into the oil.
What about oil change intervals. What are you guys doing?
Still going by the book or have you lowered the intervals. Not sure about you, but the manual states 15000km which seems a whole lot.
I hadn't thought about changing the oil more frequently - at least not seriously.
Our summer is unlikely to stress the temperature too much in the UK ;) A/C over here is for demisting your windows in winter (or summer for that matter).

LOL on the UK summer.
Since I should have my car back tomorrow night I'm debating lowering the km run to 10000km from 15000km or maybe even 7500km between changes. :head:
 Actually I won't do the 7500km because that would be once a month.
As Fen said when I push the car over long distances you can see temps of 120 but normally cruising at motorway speeds the temp is fractionally over 90.
My car sits just over 90 most of the time. I ask revo if i would have any prodlems when i go to germany and run the car flat out for long periods. They told me that all the normal safe guards where still in place so it should not be a problem for the car as it would cut before damage. Howether i am sure sitting the car at high revs for long periods must be bad.

I will prob do an oil change at 5000 on my 130.
The oil in diesels get so sooty, that i cant believe its ok changing at 10,000 miles.
I have a tdi golf that done over 150,000 and its still strong with its 5000 mile changes!!
just not shure what type of oil to go for yet.

Well we don't have much to choose from at the moment. It's got to be VW505.01 or VW506.01 approved (the 2nd one being for variable service). Still can't find many oils with that approval. Actually there's only 1 or 2 with the 506.01 approval (and they cost around 25 euros a liter). I'm using the Motul stuff, but I've heard only good things about VW's quantum label (can't get it hear though). Anyway this stuff is pretty expensive and 5000 mile changes would be one a month for me.

Millers now do a 505 01 oil for the PD engines, i think its about £25 for 5 liters which is not too dear compared to what the dealers will charge!!
Is that Millers stuff fully synthetic?
Ive heard that you should only use fully synthetic oil in turbo diesels to prevent build up of crap in the turbocharger bearings when you initially stop the engine??
Heard this on tdiclub.com, there are some useful threads on the subject of oil.

The only oil recomended for use in the Pd engines is the 505 01 and the 506 oils....
If your enging is not one of the PDs then Castrol Magnatec GTD semi is a good oil. But to be honest the most important thing is frequent changes not really the oil (as long as the oil meets the min requirements for your engine)
By frequent i change @ 5,000miles with a filter+oil change @ 10,000.
Its really more piece of mind than anything, and because i have a 150,000 mile golf tdi that is still as good as new...Well almost!
My 110 tdi ibiza did quite well with oil filter changes @15000km intervals (227000km when I traded it in).
I think it also depends on what you do with the car. If you do mostly highway (like I do) you can get away with 15000km intervals. If you do normal road & city it might be better to changes at lower intervals.
