View Full Version : Remote Central Locking - Key Coding
I have tried this...
sit in car - doors closed
1 ignition on to red lights on dash
2 turn off immediately and pull key out
3 hold 1 of the buttons down (dont matter which)
4 PRESS the other 3 times ( with a SLIGHT pause) 1 . 2 . 3
5 watch led on key (should flash) and doors usually try lock/unlock
6 turn ignition key back on to red lights and wait 5 sec
7 key out again and test operation
but at stage 5 the doors do not try and lock/unlock
Can't get my central locking to work remotly :(
All doors are opened manually with the key, so that works.
Try pressing it normally 3 times, on off on off on off and I bet it'll work.

At the expense of sounding dumb, have you tried changing the battery in the remote?
At the expense of sounding dumb, have you tried changing the battery in the remote?
at point 5 is the remote's led flashing ?
you can try it with any mk2 style remote by the way to test it just make sure if you borrow a mates that he codes it back to his car after :)
Yup, changed battey and light flashes
got no mates with mk2s :(
remember if you have the Infra Red remote you have to point it directly at the rear view mirror and there is a time constraint on it.
used to take me 2 or 3 goes to get it right, you have to be quick and in range of the sensors on the mirror.
if the key is radio then pass, it may just be that ure not quick enough.
Its a radio key, not IR
Will try again doing it really fast lol
good luck. used to have to do mine on a frequent basis, went through batteries very quickly.
Heya
I have the exact same issue.
When I go through the sequence, the key flashes 5 times, but the car doesn't repond. According to the manual, the locks are supposed to lock(or unlock), and the headlights are supposed to flash. In my case, nothing, nada. It seems that the car doesn't recognize the code that the key is sending, or not accepting it. It's also a radio key, and the central locking works when I press up or down the locks inside the car (so not a compressor issue)
I tried doing it fast, slow, medium, rare, still no luck. Must have tried 30 times this morning
Unfortunately, since my second door lock broke, I can't close the car anymore. I was hoping that I could use the remote to close it, but that thing won't work
The wierdest thing is that when I tried yesterday evening, I noticed the batteries were weak. So I opened the key and changed one of them (replaced one of the CR2016 with a CR2032 from my Zafira key) and I managed to close and open the car with the remote. So I was all happy, and went to celebrate christmas, but left the key opened on my desk. So I suppose it discharged itself during the night and lost its programming? This morning I went to buy 2 new CR2016 batteries, I plug them in, and no response from the system, and no luck in recoding. I don't understand anything ?:-(
If anyone has a clue as to why the central locking unit would not accept a new key, I'm interested !
batteries should have at least 2.9v in em
if any lower they will still appear to work but aint worth a jot

i`ve got the same problem it might be that the keyfob transmiter can`t hold a code which means need a new one only problem there 70 quid each from seat
Why not get one off ebay?? Thats what I did and just replaced my blade and immobiliser chip. As long as you get the same type you'll be fine

Go to your local car audio/alarm shop that also offers to install alarms. they should have a "frequency tester". I'm sure if you ask them nicely or give them a quid then they will test out your remote and whether its transmitter works. I did this when mine wasn't working. The LED was flashing but like you said nothing happened at step 5. So got my local alarm fitters to test out my remote, they told me its fubard and so I went onto Ebay and got a new one for £20 (SEAT want £120 + £35 for programming, thieving *******s), and it worked 1st time.

I have a similar problem, but i have two remotes one Seat lock/unlock (whixh doesnt work) and one meta system one, does one cancel out the other??? the immobiliser still works. but if the fob fails i dont know how to reset it.

The meta systems one I think is an after market alarm. So I would imagine that the previous owner decided that because the original fob/alarm wasn't working, he'd get an aftermarket one fitted. When your alarm goes off, is it the horn that sounds or a siren? Do both keys open the doors manually?
p.s. nice valver

well heres the crazy thing, if i lock the door with the key then open with the Meta alarm the Horn goes off,
If i lock the door with the meta and open with the key i get a siren
So both alarms are active,
if i get real clever and lock the car with the key and then with the meta fob i get double protection, only thing is then how to open the car without setting off the alarm lol!!!
Meta are a Spanish firm and i didnt know if they sold through Seat, as im also not covered by theft on my insurance unless i have a valid cat 2 immob certificate, However after having a very dissapointing conversation with the garage (Willoughby Seat) that not only supplied the car to its very first owner but serviced it fully changed every bulb etc untill it come to me, well lets just say 4 months later im still waiting for the radio code so why bother,

just to make that clearer if i lock the door by inserting the key in the lock and turning it (like me grans go shop cart) it still activates the original horn alarm, Ta m8

Lol, sound like one of the previous owners obviously thought MORE = BETTER  so now you have 2 functioning alarms on your car.

Tired it and it dosnt work!i get the 5 flashs and then nothin else! Any ideas any1
flip key ? they are off the later cars and i'm sure they are different frequency and certainly a different coding system
if you could all the old bits inside it you'll be ok (*immob chip inc)
i'm sure theres a thread about it somewhere
as for recoding original key
1 - check batteries are at least 2.9v and NO LESS !!! and test your new ones too (not kidding)
2 - make sure your locking system works ok with the key in the first place as a broken or jammed solenoid can freeze the system full stop and you'll get nowhere
3 - try the programming with alternate buttons - hold lock press unlock or hold unlock press lock etc
4 - if all the above tried to no avail a friend with a same style remote is handy as they can be programmed to your car to test it and vice versa - just remember to recode it back to his/her's after ;)

Ok chearr mate,i only have the 1 key n its not the remote 1 i have change the chip over n ther car works fine!if al eles fail il just get the older style key!it drives me batty not haveing remote central lockin!lol
Dose this still work if u change ur head unit as the led is in the standered one????
Dose this still work if u change ur head unit as the led is in the standered one????
you mean stereo ?
not seen a mk2 with a grundig unit in it for about 10 years :)
some of them had the older system on and had to be coded like this.
complete the following within 1 minute!
put key in driver door lock (all windows closed)
turn to unlock position 3 times holding for approx 1/2 second each time & within 5 seconds! remove the key & observe the red led in the door flash
press & hold lock botton
whilst still pressing "lock" press & release "unlock" 3 times, the door LED & the key fob LED should now flash 5 times to indicate you were successful.
if you have another key, you must repeat from "press & hold lock button" & work fairly quickly (book says within 15 seconds for each key) if no second key then wait until door LED goes out & then try the remote key fob

Ive got the same problem with my kiwi cupra its annoying so bad because i only want to be a posh twat who unlocks his car 20 feet away just once.
all these turn off then turn back on for so many seconds are bull has it actually worked for anyone because i want to know
all these turn off then turn back on for so many seconds are bull has it actually worked for anyone because i want to know
can show you on video if you want ?
works fine if the remote has good batteries and works and the central locking system is good
try a new or a different remote ? sounds like it needs one or something else is wrong
i get the led on the remote to flash 5 times but thats it.
the doors dont try to open or lock during the 7 steps either.
does anyone know when you press your remote to lock the car, should the red led on the remote stay on constant when holding the lock button as mine flashes when i hold the lock button on the remote?

my seat is 1999 and the remote didnt work when i got it. i thought it was the battery so a changed it over, still no luck. tryed adding an extra 0.4 volts on 2 it but still not luck. then tested my key at my dads garge-- the key wrked and was sending out a gd signal.
had 2 be the key code(i thought). got the key recode by seat glasgow £88 + vat. but still nuthing. it apperd i had a fulty recever unit and seat wanted anther £128 + vat to replace it. so ended up ripping out all the air locks, electrics, vacum pump and fitting central locking kit £22 from halfords.
the power in the keys seems to be a real problem and the cost if it ****s ups.
I've been having this problem too. I managed to code the key and it works intermittently so I will be testing the batteries using my (newly purchase!) voltage meter.....
Thanks for the other suggestion of how to code the central locking and I will give that a go tonight!!
Hello everybody!
I had the same problem with my cupra 2 '98...first thing that went wrong was locking mechanism on codriver's door- the stupid air "cylinder" or how can i call it, had a leak...i had to buy another one(second hand 30€, new costs 120€ at local dealer)...great, i installed it, try to lock it, everything worked fine, except of the remote...
I tried to solve the problem with all methods posted in this thread, and eventually i realised that i was doing something wrong->
according to first step by step recoding you should do exactly what it says->
1. turn egnition to red lights AND
2. then immidiately turn it off <- that is the important part
.
.
.
at first i waited for a couple of seconds before i turned it off(and then nothing happened if i hold down one and pressed another button for 3 times, except the led was flashing on remote) so make sure you are doing it right!
thanx a lot for this solution, F2 Ed. it really helped me:coolthumb
you can try it with any mk2 style remote by the way to test it just make sure if you borrow a mates that he codes it back to his car after :)
How do you do that? Surely if their key was different you wouldn't be able to do step 1.
1 ignition on to red lights on dash
Reason I ask is I've just bought a key off ebay but I think the blade is completely different to mine. Could I do this trick to check whether it's going to work before I start ripping my existing key apart?
Cheers
i believe that you can remove and dissasemble your original key to seperate central locking remote and key part-> so you can use someone else's remote(not the whole key). it's done in 10 seconds or less :)

i hope that is usefull
ps: imagine dots as empty space(else the pic gets all stupid- forum cuts off spaces)
just trying to type that :) - yes just the remote secion pulls out
nice one fructal - top piccy :):)
awesome pic mate! am i right in thinking that the key splits into key/remote without actually opening it up? I can see how I'd do that with the remote one but not with my non-remote one.

ye the remote splits as for non remote the prcedure above is for coding the locking control not immobiliser mind :)
seems confusing here a little the 'soft' recode (5 flash) is only for the central locking remote not the immobiliser itself, just for locking the doors
the immobiliser is passive and stuck inside the key and will need the chip cloned or diag activated to start the car
both systems run seperately
i think it's type1 (4 digit) iirc but ill check

A very very big thanks to F2 Ed and fructal for their help! I own a Seat Ibiza '99 (MKII) and I had tried at least 5-6 differnet ways to re-program my remote key (which had suddenly stopped months ago). None of them worked until I tried F2 Ed's way with the extra advice of fructal! Thank you!

Oh my god, THANK YOU!!! I have registered to post this one and only post, and that is that THE ABOVE WORKS..... normally i search the forums for solutions to certain specific problems, only to be frustrated at how none of the suggestions work..... but the above works. First time.
To clarify the above, keys to ignition, then straight off, then fairly quickly hold one button, press then other button 3 times.... release all buttons, the key will flash 5 times and you'll be in business.
I was doing the hold the button press 3 times thing over and over and over, the lights were flashing 5 times but nothing..... I'd done it with the key in the ignition, in the door, after leaving the engine on for 5 seconds, all sorts........ the important part is ignition to red lights then straight off, this WORKS!!
Thank you very much, I hope anybody else reading this has the same success.
hello guys i just registered to post this! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart cause i did it and thankfully the remote control now works! Story is i got in and tried again and again all the steps above and nothing happened! But as i was still inside i wondered if the batteries i just replaced were trully >3 volts. So i disassemble my key and eventually cut the battery supply and then it happened! i did the prosses once more and it worked!!!! thanx again (i knew the car had no problem!:p)

Sometimes it helps on step 1 to actually start the engine then immediately switch off.

Thanks! it works!

Thanks F2 And Fructal... My remote have not worked in 1 1/2 year!
mines still not working properly :( changed the batteries in the fobs... disconnected the battery from the car for half hour then re tried it and still nothing :S :(
