View Full Version : a11y's new car (no longer in Seat ownership...)
***NOW SOLD :( - SEE PAGE 3 ONWARDS FOR REPLACEMENT...***
Well, it looked like this before the couple of hundred miles I've driven over the past few days. Now, you'd never guess I'd actually washed it but hey, that's winter for ya...
Pics were taken on Monday.
Ouside temp never got above -1.5 degC...
Hopefully I'll be able to add to this thread with any future changes to the car. Hopefully! Considering Eiback coilovers in springtime, possibly with rear spacers. Happy enough with standard power at the moment though.
Cheers
Ally

And finally, I've included this one to try and show the difference in colour between the standard sidelight and the Philips Xtreme +80% brighter dipped beam bulbs I've got fitted (it's hard to photograph as the white balance on the camera makes it worthless to compare with anyone else's pics).
They're supposed to be 80% brighter than standard bulbs.
Bulb colour is rated at 5000k (fairly white).
But here they are anyway:

nice car and nice scenery, i should take pics like that as i live in the countryside a bit!
Cheers. I tend to favour countryside shots rather than urban pics as I feel like a right idiot standing around town taking photos of my car. At least out in the middle of nowhere there's fewer people around to point and laugh . Those were taken (mostly) less than 4 miles from my house.
exactly people think I'm weird enough being into my car and being female let alone taking photos of it!
Nice pics and nice location Ally.
How do you manage to keep the car so clean?
Nice location and pics mate!
Is that a kerb mark I see??? ;)
Some very nice pics there, where in Scotland are you from?

LOL which wheel?! They're all in need of a refurb but honestly, none were me! It was the last owner who's missus (he says ;) ) did all the kerbing. Just waiting to get through the winter before looking into a refurb for the summer.

Falkirk. Most of the pics were taken at Muiravonside Country Park but the last two (with the highland coos in the background) were Glennifer Braes, Paisley. My folks plus a lot of mates I grew up with are still in the Paisley/Johnstone area.

i have just recently brought those bulbs and when i first fitted them i thought eh? whats goin on here then...as they appeared the same as the oem ones...but, once they warm up..you can tell the difference a mile off, and they are soo much brighter
Nice pics and nice location Ally.

Cheers. I wish I could keep it clean. It was spotless on Monday morning, but this is it on Monday night after a 100-mile round trip to Paisley and back during the day...

Nice pics ally, the car is lookin good mate.
Update: this weekend's task was....
... constructing a sub enclosure from start to finish and wiring in my amp :). Enclosure made from MDF, amp situated below the sub (but with loads of ventilation and space around it) with the sub on top, with the box angled to fit against the rear seat. It took me some amount of planning: I used trigonometry (SOH-CAH-TOA anyone?!) for the first time since high school LOL. JBL GTO 75.2 amp plus a Elemental Designs SQ10 slimline sub. Basically, I chose this sub on the basis of it only requiring a small enclosure (0.3-0.5cF), only needing 3" ounting depth, plus they've got a great reputation for the money. The amp was the best I could find for the remainder of my budget. I'm not after massive bass, just some to add a bit of SQ into the car.
Overall the majority of the boot remains useable (important for me and work/pleasure) - I angled the sub upwards rather than vertically to minimise any chance of damage from luggage. Well happy with the results considering it's a small sub/enclosure :)

That looks really tidy bud! Really nicely done.
Here's the photo I forgot to post - my planning. Was a bloody awkward shape to work out and cut the mdf to the correct angles, but it worked first time with no wrong cuts, somehow...
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p221/a11y_mitchell/Cars/Seat%20Ibiza%20Cupra%20TDI/2008-03-09Subamppic4.jpg
And would you be willing to share that sub enclosure with me? Looks a very tidy effort! WHat size sub is it?
http://www.edaudio.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=21_29&products_id=56 - it's a 10" needing a 0.3-0.5 cubic foot capacity sealed enclosure. My enclosure is a fraction over that (0.5cF = 14,158cm3, mine is 14,500cm3 or there about)
Gimme a minute and I'll upload better pics of my plans...
I've got a 12" Kenwood, so guessing a larger enclosure would be needed. Unless I go for a 10" instead. What will the sound difference between the two be?
Err, not sure TBH. I'm a complete novice with audio stuff. I just asked around a lot on www.talkaudio.co.uk and read up a fair bit. IIRC it depends on the size of the enclosure - it's really quite important to match the sub with the correct size of enclosure (manufactures should tell you that info).
Plans:

You put a lot of work into that one mate, looks really good too! :)
That looks good Ally.
Fits in perfect. The drawing were so precise the other night i had imagined how it would look.
How did you find the wiring? Easy Peasy?
Yeah, hardest part was tucking the power wire under the plastic side sill - compared to my Clio it's so hard to take interior bits off (i.e. things don't fall apart..)
Only problem I encountered was my passenger seat folding mechanism breaking - every time I wan't more space in the passenger side to do the wiring I had to wind the reclining mechanism back and forward. First trip to the dealer for me I think... :(

Good work on the install Ally, looks very tidy.
Got one like that already :)
Custom fit box took a while to work out sizes!
Cheers for the comments. I'd love to try and make an enclosure in fibreglass and shape it around the side of the boot - would make a very neat and small enclosure keeping more of the boot useable...
It's only taken me 14 months, but I've finally got around to getting my wheels refurbed. The wheels were in a bit of a shocking state when I picked it up from it's previous owner and I can honestly say I'd not added any further damage. Well, just the once on a pothole
Ummmed and ahhhed for ages about going dark with the wheels but finally wimped out and went for brighter silver. I'm happy with the results...

Much better lol
Comments welcomed. I had little choice over the shade of silver - it was the only one the powdercoater had, but it was cheap, local and quick so I'm not complaining.
Although it was actually a few weeks ago I had the wheels done, the weather's been so pish I only got a chance to wash the car yesterday. Took a little drive today and the sun actually appeared so I fired off some photos.
Other than the wheel refurb I think the only change has been a reduced-size front plate (but it's still legal size and spacing - I just cut off the surrounding additional wheel to the bare legal minimum).

MIDLIFE CRISES ALERT, MIDLIFE CRISIS ALERT...
Following the subtle change in avatar message last week (and me turning 30 on Tuesday), I eventually took some pics of my new car. It’s a f**king great time to be buying a car, with new cars sales flat-lining and the used car market on it’s @rse. Luckily I sold my Ibiza (55-plate Cupra TDI) for a good price at the start of December, giving me the pick of the market.
I considered and tried a few cars before settling on my choice, but ruled all else out in the end:
VX220 n/a – fun, mental handling, but I struggled to get in and out it (I’ve suffer from back trouble)
350z – good handling but low rent interior IMO and high(er) running costs
Clio V6 mk2 – just can’t get it out my system but decent ones were above my budget
Z3M Coupe – still too much £££ for a decent example
Z4 Coupe – above my budget
So I’ve bought a 3.0 BMW Z4 Roadster. Picked it up from Hartlepool Monday last week and my initial impressions are everything I expected. It’s good handling, fun to drive, reasonably quick, has a great interior, and is reasonably cheap to run. And that straight-6 engine… what an engine.
- 231hp / 221lbft
- M Sport suspension & optional 18’s
- I avoided the M Sport seats as I’ve got too much “girth” (across the shoulders…) to get comfy in them
- covered only 18.5k miles
- just over 4 years old
It should prove cheaper than my old CTR to run: same road tax band, cheaper insurance(!), better MPG despite better performance, even tyres are cheaper if I go for normal (non run-flats). I just decided I’d had enough of diesel and thought “F**k it!”
And the best part? I bought it privately and only paid what I sold my Ibiza for plus £2.6k. That’s from an Ibiza with an initial RRP of £16.5k, to a Z4 with an RRP of £33k but 11 months older, for the sum of £2.6k. Mental. The used car bargains out there really are brilliant…
It ain’t clean as I’ve done 500 miles since Monday with Christmas visits and the like, but I don’t care LOL, I’m enjoying the driving too much. Not sure I’ll be around on SCN that often now so cheers for everyone who gave advice (good and bad LOL) an generally contributed to the banter…
Moving on:

Each to their own buddy! But I would say - proper midlife crisis!
Enjoy it all the same!
Thanks Andy. That night feels like a while back but was only earlier this year, wow.
And aye, I've got a history with sporty Clios and always hankered after a V6, but in all honesty I need something slightly more practical than a V6. At least with the Z4 I've got a boot lol.
Short back and sides plate mate. ;)
Only joking - Nice car... would love one myself.

No, but luckily I've got a thick skin LOL
Loving the car so far but sh*t-scared of RWD on the slippery roads at the moment
Good choice matey with the flat 6, and its a real posers car too haha! only joking absoulutley love it matey, i was toying with idea of getting a z3 as you can pick up a bargain now.
Cheers
Yep, some bargains to be had out there. Worth the extra for a Z4 over any Z3 though - chassis is several times stiffer, much better handling. And yeah, it is a poser's car :funk: but at least mine - unlike the majority of Z4's - has the engine to back it up! Would've love an M version but still waaaay above my budget.
Ally
Do you own a hairdresser's? :)
 Hairdressers don't have 3.0 engines under the hood!
Really like the new car Ally especially the alloys! I'd have one in a heartbeat if I could afford the insurance
Thanks
Insurance wasn't much extra for me (an old boy at 30 though)
£340 for the Ibiza (Cupra TDI) vs £440 for this Z4 3.0
Running costs will be scary though LOL (but still cheaper to run that my previous CTR)
