Suspension change finished - p7

Well, I've had my Ibiza for a year (give or take a few days), and I've never put it all together in one place. So, at the 12 month point (and with exams looming), I think there's no better time!

Well last January, i decided to move on from my 22k mile mk2 Golf. I didn't want to put the extra miles on, and it was dawning on me that although it was very low mileage and drove like new, it was, unfortunately, a rusty nail. So after seeing the ad on here, I took a trip up to Derby to look at the Seat. Unfortunately on the way back to Bristol, the gearbox on the golf let go - but that's a story for another day!

Minty on the outside, soft on the inside!
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF0938-2.jpg

Between January and the summer, it was given new front wheel bearings, tie-rod ends, ball joints, front discs and pads, 1x CV joint, a radiator, 4x Goodyear Eagle F1, a new exhaust system and the usual oil changes / service! Other than the tyres & exhaust, the all work was done with the help of friends! Oh, and also the infamous pedal box problem reared it's head, so that was bolted too!

In various states of undress:

Taking the old rad out, for the third time after ECP kept supplying the wrong part......
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSC00024.jpg

Wheel bearings etc etc (Yes, we carried on working on it in the snow. There's a pic floating about somewhere with the angle grinder making sparks while the snow falls!)

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSC03318.jpg

All this was building up the main event of the summer - a trip to the alps for me and two others (+ mountaineering kit) in the 'biza. Happy to report that it got there and back with no problems. And performed in fine style on the mountain pass that we went up and down half a dozen times :D

At the top of the road was the village & campsite we were staying at, at the bottom (25 miles, ~50 minutes) was the town where we got supplies & petrol from. Unfortunately we ended up at the campsite with almost no petrol and had to go down idling wherever possible. The two guys in a van behind us commented that for someone with no petrol, I was going at a fair rate (given that the Ibiza disappeared from their sight). What can I say?!

In the Boloigne (sp?) ferry port. Nearing the end of it's near-2000 mile adventure. Dirty on the outside and smelly on the inside, after we slept in it after missing the last ferry at night. The most uncomfortable night of 'sleep' i've had in a long time.

Thanks again to all those offering advice before I went!

Then it was on to Edition 38. Despite the standardness of the car, it was welcome on the club stand. Some great people & cars on the SCN stand, I thought. And as most of you know, we won best club stand - I'm looking forward to this year's show already!

Before the show I fitted a new set of rub strips to cover the gluey mess that the old ones left. It was pulling the lacqeur off when I tried to take the glue off, so a new set of rub strips was the student's solution :p

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2173.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2180_2.jpg

Since then, it's not had much done to it, other than keeping it on the road with my student's budget!

It's currently in for the MOT with an ABS problem, hopefully will be back on the road tomorrow.

i think it looks better with the strips on aswell.

Pics of the alps are awesome!!!!

Thanks James,
The photos are flattering it a bit I think - there's a fair bit of rust on the rear arches. I agree that it looks better with the rub strips, especially as none of the other plastic parts have been colour coded. It's a bit less slab-sided with them on I think. Alps were fantastic, some great driving roads round there!!

Great pics! - I'd like to do a trip to the alps!

How'd your brakes cope!!

Running a car on a budget I think creates some of the best experiences/memories!

Hi DC,

When heading downhill, they did start to fade quite badly. But, it wasn't significant until the 4th or 5th successive hairpin, braking from probably 35-55mph each time. And this was probably 35 minutes out of 50 or so, although there were enough stretches of road for the brakes to cool.

I wouldn't want to do a more demanding road without an upgrade to say a decent set of 280's. But bear in mind, it always had me and at least two passengers in it.

I really recommend you do it - but make sure you've got decent brakes and tyres etc etc!

Running on a budget certainly keeps it interesting! Not having a huge budget certainly makes you think about where money should be spent.

Yeah it was an awesome road trip, would deffo recommend the roads over there. Although we have some good roads here too, the Peak district is not far from me and can be quite entertaining when it's not full of tourists.

Brummy, Toledo Widow,

Thanks guys :) Just don't look too closely next time!

I wasn't convinced by the colour either when I got it, but it's really grown on me now.

If I were you I would get the weights taken off the outside of the wheels and get a kind mate to balance them again with sticky ones :funk:

That is a good idea, the weights on the outside are a bit ugly. Unfortunately the alloys have a fair bit of corosion so it's not really a priority! I quite fancy a set of Ronal multispokes for it when these tyres are worn out - a while off yet though.

Well I happen to have 2 sets. They are both in need of a refurb, white ones more so (paint flaking in some place), black ones are alright just a bit of curbing. Think I am keeping the black ones though.

Quick update,

The pedal box is finally broken, so I've just ordered a new pedal box, clutch cable and all the other parts from SEAT. Once the parts arrive (Tuesday) I'll be changing the box over. Keep an eye out for pics / guide on this thread :)

Also managed to get hold of a pair of unused 15" wheels, so they'll be going on at some point this summer when it's time for some new tyres.

AlpineWhite
12-06-2008, 07:50
Well I started the pedal box yesterday. As promised, here's a step-by-step of what I did. I'm writing this up as I go along, so bear with me if some of it is unneccesary or if I get some of it wrong!

1. Access to the pedals

I removed the driver's side glovebox (just pull it upwards and outwards) and the plastic tray underneath it. It's held in by two screws (arrowed).

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2238.jpg

I also took out the driver's seat. It's only held in by one bolt at the front after which point it lifts out.

2. Remove the steering wheel

Firstly the airbag has to come out (the battery must be disconnected for this). It's held together by two allen head screws at the back of the wheel.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2240.jpg

Once these are undone the airbag unit is loose. It comes away from the steering wheel but there's an electrical connector which just pulls out. The airbag should be stored with the padded side up, according to the manual.

At this point the steering wheel nut (24mm) must be removed. Also, there was another connector from the airbag that has to be unclipped. This was hidden in some foam padding:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2244.jpg

3. Remove the stalks

There are three black screws which hold the stalks on. Then, make sure all the connectors are undone - i kept finding more of them! Once they are undone the stalks just slide off the steering column and you will be left with something like this:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2249.jpg

4. Remove the steering column

At the base of the steering column is a rubber guard, held in by two plastic nuts. Take these out:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2250.jpg

You'll then have clear access to a plate with two nuts on it. Undo these, being careful not to drop them into the hole where the steering column disappears into....

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2251.jpg

Once the nuts are undone, the plate comes away with the two bolts.

That's as far as I got yesterday afternoon. The next step is to remove the shear bolts that hold the steering column frame in.

AlpineWhite
12-06-2008, 17:23
Shear bolts are now out. I tried the method of driving them around with a chisel but it wasn't working for me. I ended up using a dremel to cut the heads off. The washers then fall out with a knock and the rest of the bolt is very easy to remove.

Then the steering colum will drop down, but I couldn't remove it completely because of the wires going up into the column.

No pics from today.

Next step: Remove the brake shaft from the pedal. The Haynes manual talks about a special tool fabricated from an exhaust bracket, so this should be interesting!!

AlpineWhite

Update:

Stuck with getting the pedals off the pedal box itself. It's only a retaining clip that needs to come off but it's got me foxed.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2261.jpg

Any ideas on how to remove it?

-----------------------------------

Clutch Cable

-----------------------------------

Decided to turn my attention to the clutch cable after getting wound up by the pedal box itself. It's a fairly simple procedure:

1. Release the cable end in the pedal box (mine was already off)

2. Compress the boot at the clutch release arm, secure with the white plastic tie that's already on the cable. Remove the end of the cable from the clutch release arm.

3. Remove the wiper blades and scuttle panels. I also took off the wiper assembly to give better acess to the hole in the bulkhead which the cable goes through.

4. In the cabin, the cable is fixed to the pedal box by a clip with two lugs. I used a screwdriver to push one of the lugs back and release it from the pedal box.

The new cable doesn't have this clip on it. I used a pair of molegrips to hold the cable and pulled the clip off:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2259.jpg

Don't damage it, you'll need to put it on the new cable if you've not bought another one.

5. Pull the cable out into the engine bay.

andyj
13-06-2008, 14:42
ah, it's one of those 'special' retaining clips.... ;)

looks like one of the ones where you have to lift one side of it, and then slide it back.....

on the one in the pic, try lifting the left hand side of it (away from the shaft) and then slide the clip towards you away from the pedal box.

Andy

AlpineWhite
13-06-2008, 15:03
Yep a 'special' retaining clip, it's just making me look 'a bit special', if you catch my drift!

I'll give it a try.

Cheers Andy

AlpineWhite
13-06-2008, 15:36
Got that one off, next is the brake pedal. It's another retaining clip:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2262.jpg
Not a great photo I know.

I've removed all the bolts securing the pedal box as I can. It's got some movement but it won't come out. The only things I haven't done yet is remove the brake pedal and disconnect the brake pedal from the brake shaft.

Unless there's an obscured nut / bolt somewhere?

andyj
13-06-2008, 15:45
same principle I think..... lift the tab on the right, to the right (unclipping it from the small tab coming from the left) and then I think it should slide away from you.....

AlpineWhite
14-06-2008, 09:41
Clutch cable continued:

Refitting is much the same as removal! As the plastic clip was quite well fastened to the old clutch cable, i put a bit of araldite around it to make sure it stays on in use. Feed the cable through from the engine bay into the cabin, putting the rubber seals in place as you go. Easy.

Pedal Box:

That clip did NOT want to come off yesterday afternoon! Just ordered another one from VW (part number 1H0721159) just in case the old one should have an encounter with my new Dremel this morning :D

Edit: Got it out!

After this i pulled out the shaft that the clutch & brake pedals pivot on. This reveals another 13mm nut behind the brake pedal. It's the most obscured one yet, I used a 3/8ths ratchet but maybe a ratchet spanner or a 1/4in ratched would be easier. Now the pedal box is loose, save for a little plastic clip holding some wiring to it. I still haven't done the plastic lug that the brake pedal is attached by; i read elsewhere on here that the pedal box can be removed without taking it off. We shall see!

AlpineWhite
14-06-2008, 17:27
The pedal box was also stopped by a little plastic tie that tidies up the wiring - shown below. This can be pushed out with fingers or a screwdriver.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2266.jpg

The pedal box can, as written elsewhere, be removed without taking off the brake pedal connector. I carefully pulled the brake pedal through the large hole in the pedal box.

And it's out :D

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2271.jpg

Side by side with the new pedal box:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2269.jpg

Note that the design is the same, except for the tab that holds those wired mentioned earlier in this post. I'll have the new pedal box reinforced before putting the new one in.

Failures on the main body:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/anthony_lewis/DSCF2272.jpg

The 'bolt hole' is from where i'd previously bolted the two parts together.

And the corresponding bit that broke off!

nice work Anthony.

I'll be doing the pedal box on mines soon enough, mines has a "temporary fix" its stiff, squeeky and driving me mad, so its time to get it rebuilt properly now.

How much was the pedal box and clutch cable from SEAT?

Regards, David

AlpineWhite
17-06-2008, 12:19
Hi David,

S6K2721335H Clutch Cable £27.62
S1H0721169A Bracket £3.33
S411417549 Shear Bolt £1.82 ea, x2 = £3.64
S6K2721115D Bracket £62.38

Net £96.97
VAT £17.97
Total £113.94

The £3.33 bracket is the plastic clip for the brake servo, I haven't used this as I managed to get the pedal box out without removing the brake pedal.

Is that normal price or "trade" ?

My mate will be able to get me it through the trade as he's a mechanic next door to SEAT in Glasgow.

THanks for the part numbers, makes it a hell of a lot easier

David

AlpineWhite
17-06-2008, 15:11
That's retail mate.

Pedal box is now back in, just struggling with the over-centre spring. After that, all that remains (in theory) is putting the steering column etc back in, and we should be away....

I'll be mighty unhappy if I get it going again and there's no petrol at the pumps!!

AlpineWhite
17-06-2008, 17:31
I think i've made a mistake when putting the pivot shaft back on.

On the 'inside' part of the pivot shaft, there's the brake pedal and a plastic tube. The plastic shaft is asymmetric, it's got a plain section and a section with two sets of plastic ridges. I think the section with the two sets of ridges is where the support bracket (that comes up from the firewall) should go, and the steering colum should clip onto the plain section. As it stands I can't get the steering column on far enough, it needs to go down about another cm.

AlpineWhite

Ok, I have made a mistake!

Hopefully it'll all be back in one piece tomorrow!

AlpineWhite
17-06-2008, 20:55
Clutch Over-Centre Spring

1. Position the pedal end of the spring onto the pedal
2. Use an open-ended spanner (I used 12mm) to compress it slightly and push it up the metal wall towards the pedal box. It will get stuck in a gap between the two.
3. Use a screwdriver to lever the spring end onto the pedal box. By positioning the end of the screwdriver on the pedal box, it almost acts as a rail when you pull on the screwdriver.

AlpineWhite
19-06-2008, 15:10
The plastic tube was on the wrong way round. The correct orientation is shown below:

I cleaned the steering wheel too - 8/9 years of sweat and grime was unpleasant! Much better now....

Finished!

Conclusion: It's a job that can be done if you have the time and patience. None of it is technically difficult, it's just very fiddly.

Also I have to say a big thank-you to Fl@pper - your advice and help has been invaluable!

Brummy,

hope it's of some use mate.

Cruiser87,

I'll let sean comment on fading paint ;) It's greg's old car, and yes, it's very tidy.

EGP is 'extra gloss protection'. It's basically a sealant that's applied between the polish and wax stages. It protects the paint for a bit longer than just wax on it's own.

Well I can't really say if it's worth it or not as it's only been on a week or so. But the SRP & EGP combination seems to be fairly well regarded, considering it's fairly inexpensive and readily available, from what I've read on detailingworld.

Coming along nicely mate :)

You may also want to look for a proper 8v air-box ;) the one on it is a 16v one I think.... hence the 'inlet' with the duck tape and cable-tie over the end !!! :D (couldn't be bothered to find a replacement when I had it, so just used the duck tape as a 'temporary' solution..... ;) )

The 'inlet' is where the Idle Stabalisation Valve connects to the airbox on the 16v! The 8v doesn't have an ISV, it works using the throttle body ;)

Is it really? Never knew that. I've seen other 8v engine bays that look the same except there's another smaller pipe going into the bit that's gaffa-taped off. Are we sure the 8v and 16v boxes are different?

PS, changed it from silver tape to black  less noticeable that way!

Just had a quick look on Vagcat, it says:

So it seems they are different.

Thanks guys :)

Brummy, yep, no worries on the field. Maybe, just maybe, that'll change for next year!!

Paul, I used the following:
-Autoglym engine & machine cleaner, Tetroclean (this is really nasty stuff - wish i could find more of it!!) and some foaming degreaser from the same people who make WD40.
-Small nylon brush and a toothbrush
-Various rags, water sprayer
-High temp engine paint for the block and cam cover
-Meguiars vinyl care for the pipes.
Be warned, it takes a lot of time!! Once I'd started I felt I had to finish the job....

Andy, it was worse than in the picture on the last page!! It's basically 'all good' - just covered in 9 years of muck!!

You moving on now then mate??

Ollie

Hey mate,

Starting to think about, yeah. I don't expect the plate to sell straight away so I'm just trying to give myself some options.

MOT and insurance are up at xmas so I'll wait until the new year, at least. Early Leon Cupras and Octavia VRS' are coming down to around the £3k mark now and insurance is comparable with the 8v. Wouldn't leave me with any money to sort out any future problems mind!

Something like a Leon Cupra or an Octavia VRS would be ideal for the 15k a year commuting I'll be starting in the summer, and I can get myself something else as a toy (mx-5 possibly)

Equally I might end up keeping the mk2 for another year! :D

Ant

OllieL
05-10-2008, 16:20
Keep it!!
If the plate sells then you don't really need to sell the car - keep it for fun!!!
If u get an early leon you have to get the face lift bumpers on it!!!!! and that will cost you some money!!

Mk3 Cupra Ibiza??? There is one on the forsale section for cheap with reasonable milage. Has a black bonnet which is pretty cool too

I'm going to be doing similar next summer which is when i will have to sell mine :(
I'm looking at early Leons, Toledo's and MK4 Golfs as a bigger car and 5 doors would be an advantage. Probably going to have 2.3 V5 over the 1.8T's as they go wrong less, are cheaper to buy and about the same on petrol on my work run. Although i'm not ruling the 1.6 16v out completely if the fuel situation starts to worsen again.

It will be a shame to finally leave the MK2 club but the cars a lovely original low miler and i don't want to ramp miles on to it, so hopefully it'll go to someone whose an enthusiast and only goes out for the odd blast.

AlpineWhite
05-10-2008, 18:14
That's why I'm thinking VRS instead. I think it's a bit better looking than the leon in standard trim - most people couldn't tell the difference between the Cupra and a 1.4. Only problem is, there don't seem to be as many Octys around. Both the Leon and the Octy have 180bhp instead of 150 in the Golf. Maybe an A3 1.8T if I can find one!

It would be a shame to leave the mk2's behind, they're great cars - but if I have a weekend toy I think I'd quite like something a bit more 'focused' with rear wheel drive.

Saw that mk3, think it would need as much spending on it to get it how I want it as just buying a standard mk3. I'd want to take out the tints, replace the wheels and paint the bonnet..... Wouldn't rule out a mk3 though, they're approaching the £3k mark too now.

Paul,
Yours does look mint!

Well I may be interested to take it off your hands next summer. I really want a white gti and it being an 8v is good aswell as I use my car everyday. So the fuel wont be that big an issue. Then that way I would be able to transfer alot of the stuff over from my 1.4 to the gti.

I'd rather pass it on to someone who'll look after it. Don't particularly want to see it run into the ground after all the time & money I've spent on it.

Unfortunately cars like the mk2 are old enough that just about anyone can afford one.

If you are selling it in the next 12 months then I wouldn't bother if it doesn't need doing. You spend £100 plus on doing that and you wont get anything more for it if you should come to sell it in a years time

List of jobs for SpringFest:

1. New track rod ends
2. Tracking
3. Paint and fit new grille (old one snapped when I removed it last time)
4. Re-fit front bumper (one side has come unclipped)

So, one track rod end was done today. The other side is not moving off the track rod, so it'll have to go to a garage to get heated up.

Indeed it did sell, took a deposit (as they requested to secure it) booked it in to have the work done and then they rang saying they could'nt have it anymore and that they don't want the deposit back as they messed me around.

So i have a GTi with the work that needed doing almost paid for by their deposit.

Bizzarre doesn't even come close to describing it all

Puzzled as hell mate. Its getting the work done now anyway as it'd be daft not to.

I've not re-advertised as I don't have a clue what to do, but as i've gone to town on having it repaired i think i'll hang on to it for the short term.

Update:

Track rod ends: Done
Tracking: Done

Paint grille: Had a kiwi grille I bought from the 'bay. I also had a bottle of Nitromors which claimed to be safe on modern plastics (and I quote) "such as ABS". The said Nitromors was applied (generously), and as it turns out, it's NOT safe on ABS. Arse.

So, anyone got a facelift grille to sell? :)

Re-fit front bumper: Done.

Hi im new on the road, just brought my ibiza 97 a couple of months ago, and the pedal box a broke. i have someone to help me with the job, were up to...

all the nuts around the pedal box are removed, the little glove box below the steering wheel, the steering wheel and clocks are out, stuck on the steering colum where you have to take the shear pins out, how do you get them out to remove the actual pedal box.

thanks Todd

AlpineWhite
13-04-2009, 21:56
Hi Todd,

Sorry for the late reply! I used a dremel tool. Ended up with the dremel facing the wrong way round (i.e. the disc end faced towards me, rather than away from me) and cut the heads of the shear bolts off. The other option was to use a drill, but I couldn't fit mine in the space.

AA man: "So what's yours then, a 1400?"

Me: "Only just"

True enough, I've not needed to do anything that a 1.4 wouldn't have needed. Made me grin anyway.

Just taken it for a run out on the country roads. Was lucky enough to follow a TVR who was taking it steady on the way out, and then a clear road with the sun setting behind me on the return. One of those occasions where everything is just right :D

Thanks chaps. Don't know about inspiration, but it's nice to hear! Perhaps the pedal box was the crowning moment? Yes, there is a for-sale thread. It needs a few bits doing in the coming months so i'm only asking the same amount that i think i can get if i were to split it for parts. They're pretty cheap cars to buy now, and a good one doesn't cost a great deal to run, especially if it's a weekend toy. I'll still be hanging about on here! Ant
