View Full Version : A dodgy performer

Ive highlited this problem before with my Ibiza 20VT, but here goes again. 2002 IBIZA Cupra 20VT, 17000 miles, REVO'd, Forge DV007P and Jetex cat-back are the only performance mods. Even before i was REVO'd ive had this problem that i cant put my finger on:

Basically the car is feeling un-smooth, not too perky, still quick dont get me wrong, just not getting upto speed as the car sometimes has in the past. This problem is on and off. I can run it on 95RON and it will feel great, then it starts to feel crap again, so i start to use optimax, it then feels great for a while, then reverts back to feeling less perky, so i have to revert back to 95 and then to optimax and so on and so on. According to the boost gauge everything seems normal too. Lets put it this way- its very noticable this drop in performance. The car just doesnt have that low-down zip that it sometimes did have. Since being REVO'd ive run it on nothing but Optimax from different stations each time, and still theres no improvement. Checked the DV and air-box- ALL fine. So now im thinking have I got a nasty clooged up fuel tank/fuel lines or full of crap fuel filter? It seems to me that it is a fuel problem as its on and off shortly after each fill-up. Ive had it checked out at the dealers a while ago but they couldnt find anything and i just concluded to myself that I was just getting use to the performance, but that is NOT the case due to the car getting back to its good ol self now and then. SO ANNOYING!

Can anyone shed any light??

Oh- and before someone mentions coils, i had all 4 replaced with the new type ones last week ;) and it has had its 10000 miles serive on the dot.

mmmmmmmmmmmm have you tried a fuel additive cleaner like redex or
something?
http://www.holtsauto.com/products/8.jpeg
dunno if this will help having never used one myself:dunno:

Do you fill up at supermarkets?

M1KETDi

not used a fuel cleaner/additive yet- was thinking that for my next plan of action. Usually fill up at BP stations or Shell.

Danny, that would be great mate. Cheers. What is the stuff? Like i say, im convinced its fuel related or fuel filter realted. Checked everything else out relvent to performance and everything is fine.

Just a thought.

As it seems to be related to filling with fuel, could it be feasible you have a blocked fuel tank vent pipe. This could cause a vaccum in the tank which could potentially hinder fuel delivery, and then it is released when you fill up by opening the cap. Any hissing / sucking sound when you open the filler cap ?

M1KETDi
25-03-2003, 16:03
i see what your saying mate, but theres no hissing or pressure noises when opening and closing the filler cap. :(

Danny, i mean YOU drive MY car so i know that im not trippin' and you tell me what you think. Suppose it could be the MAF. It really aint feeling good now. Gonna ring IMG and see what i can wangle outta them, if not then i'll try SEAT UK.

Let me know about weekend anyway. cheers.

Check engine light has come on dash this morning. Booked it in @ IMG friday morning for a check over. May be related to my lack of performance? MAF maybe?

The checklight came on on my car as soon as I left IMG the last time I was in there, think they didn't reset it properly with VAG COM tool.
will get awesome to look at it 2moz,think its a two minute job!

mine drives fine though even with shit 95 fuel and the check light on.

I've heard your getting a season ticket for Seat maintenance:rolleyes:

you worry me now,is my maf dodo'd as well?

My Leon was like this. Talked the dealer into changing the MAF and the problems went away. No CEL's or fault codes were logged at all though.

So your car was groggy, but still driveable and the check light was on?:dunno:

If fitting a new MAF sensor sorted it,what tactics did you adopt to get SEAT to change it under warrenty?
I'm sure it will be difficult to get this changed under warrenty,as the car is still driveable.

Light never came on. Got advice from AmD and from others on this forum, printed some info out and took it along to the main dealers. I think they'd had problems with MAF's on other cars and so they just agreed to swap the MAF over to see if it fixed the fault. It did and so they left me with a nice new MAF.

Luckily, the head mechanic at this particular dealer didn't put all his faith in the diag machine and was always willing to believe that there could be a fault that didn't show up (unlike many other dealers now). The garage has since closed though.

now im even more concerned....if MAF dunt show up on diag then why the hell is the CEL light on?! something else now?! Im just gonna have to tell the dealer about the MAF and ask them to let me try a working MAF on my car to see if the problems go away of crap performance. i hate this car now, had it 11 bloody months from brand new. No-more SEAT for me im afraid. any1 wanna buy a fecked cupra? :dunno:

The MAF could now be completely broken which is why the CEL may be on. Sorry, wasn't clear before - a MAF can start failing either from contamination or some other reason that stops it performing as it should. The ECU still sees it as working so no CEL. A CEL will only show if the MAF is completely broken, which could now be the case with you.

One easy way to check if it is the MAF causing the problem - just unplug it. The CEL will still show but the car will revert to just using the MAP sensor. This should restore any lost power if it was the MAF in the first place.

These MAF's also fail on Audi's/Porsches etc. so it's not just the fact that it's a SEAT that has caused the problem.

have un-plugged it- like u say the CEL light still shows up, as does the TCS light! When i plug it back in the TCS light does not light up. *Slight* improvement on performance but not back to what it should be.

ok, the ABS+TCS problems I was having is sorted. They havent appeared on the dash since it was in at IMG. When i unplug the MAF only the TCS light appears, but when I re-plug the MAF back in it doesnt light up. Danny, PM me you mobile number matey.

well, after letting Danny (aka Deejay) out loose on the good ol private roads (cough) this evening in my car, he confirms that my car does NOT feel right. And after he kindly let me drive his, his compared to mine is a lot different, in the sense that his screams forward loads more than mine. Very confusing all this.

Mike have you run the car with the MAF disconnected? Or have you just unplugged then plugged it back in?

If it's the MAF and you run it with it unplugged the fault should go away ( although you might loose a small amount of power )

Sorry, stupid non-mechanical question, but how do you unplug the MAF? :dunno:

Just unplug the connector that goes into the side of the MAF housing.

The MAF is the bit of pipe that bolts directly to the airbox. On the side of that you will see a connector.

Ah, nice one Mike.

I'll give that a go on the way home from work.

The problem with my car is 3rd gear (overtaking gear). The car seems to pull less in 3rd than any other gear, including 4th. Once you get well over 3,000RPM's, it seems to pick up again! Does it about 75% of the time. Thing is, it still goes well, but I know it can go better and I've felt it go better for the other 25%.

I'll give the MAF a go and see what happens. :dunno:

Anyway- he hooks it up to the good ol VAG 5051- and long and behold- MAF FAULT!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

One now on order under warrenty. Lets hope my performance is restored soon.
