Hi there, I’ve been an owner of a 2.8 V6 Cupra4 for 8 months now, and have had the usual Seat problems of coil packs etc. After several months of trouble free motoring I have noticed a series of clicking noises coming from the engine before I started my Leon. This was mildly annoying but as no warning light came on and I couldn’t find a fault, this was left. Eventually a problem arose that the car would attempt to start but would not kick into life. After getting towed to the local dealer  the problem was found to be a “dodgy connection to the ECU” I quote from the dealer. All seemed fine and I was back on the road within hours. To cut a long story short I’m convinced that my Leon now has less power than it did before the ECU problem. It appears that my Cupra is revving less than it used to. Im currently getting 3000rpm in 5th gear doing 80kph (50mph) and it seems a struggle to get to 210kph.
Is anyone else who owns a Cupra4 getting more revs at 80kph in 5th gear or am I going mad? If so please let me know and I can state me case to the dealer.
Its just had its 15K service and no problem was spotted.
Hi,
It's late in the evening here so I can actually go out there and drive to double check.
But if I remember correctly, if you're on a level road at idle (no foot on pedals) you should get 25 kph in 4th. Exactly 20 kph in 4th, exactly 16 in 3rd, and 11kph in second.
You can start with that test. Maybe even from there you will notice that either it won't maintain that speed in idle, or even worse, the engine chokes and shuts off. Remember though that it should be done on a level road.
Other than that, all I can say is that 210 kph is easily reachable in 5th. 6th is the overdrive you need to reach max speed.
Also if I remember correctly, when in 6th and doing 2,000 RPM you should be between 85 and 90 kph. So if you would downshift to 5th you'd get an RPM of about 2,300 or 2,400 RPM and surely not 3,000 to maintain 80 kph in 5th. Then you would be well past 120 kph.
You can also let the dealer check for a fouled MAF sensor. Or the spark plugs too. And let them explain to you exactly what they ment with that ECU thing. What I've just told you is just to confirm if indeed you do have lack of power. If you do. Contact you dealer and let them know.

p.s. Next time post in the Leon forum, you'll get a much better response.
ps.....
you must one of the few to drive a Cupra4 V6 in the UK. Those weren't made in RHD models right? So your steering wheel is at the wrong side?

Thanks for taking the time out to investigate this MD ;). When I finish work I'll take it for a nice long test and verify the results you gave me. Looking back at my own thread I realised I made a bit of a mistake  It should be 4th gear 3000rpm 80kph.
Im off to the dealers Saturday to sort out my steering (car pulls to left) so I'll get them to check out the MAF sensor and plugs.
As for my Leon being LHD, it really doesnt cause me any problems at all apart form overtaking lorries. In fact I prefer driving a LHD car. I havent seen another Cupra4 on the road yet so I guess Im one of a very few :D :D
I havent come across an R on the road yet Ice Man but I'd love to know who's faster, got better handling etc
I bet you could beat a Cupra R if you know how to launch that AWD V6.
I've noticed that when you couple a big V6 with AWD you need to make sure not to let the RPM drop too much during launch. Due to the lack of wheelspin and the engine mass, you'll severely boggle down the engine if you jump the clutch. And when below 2,500 RPM this engine really doesn't show poise to get going. It's when you break 3,000 that all hell breaks loose (you can check for that too in you test, that kick at about 3,000 RPM).
Therefore slipping the clutch works best. On the other hand you don't want to fry the clutch with your first 5 launches, so I decided to make a compromise.
I launch at about 3,000 RPM, slipping the clutch at a quicker than normal pace so as not to overheat the clutch too much. While doing that slam down on the throttle. You'll see much better results than jumping the clutch at 3,000:devil:

You'd have one easy mate... Especially if you turbo that V6 :D
That's why I want one, just not sure about LHD or about the insurance... Do you get charged a massive amount because it's LHD?

Ok, looks like I'm up for some serious launch practice. Hope the clutch holds out.
Thanks for the tips MD. Shame we cant race but Im sure to find some R's up for it.
The insurance Ice Man, well I aint going to go into it. Im being ripped off  (Im with Privilege) but thats because I was driving a company car and was not entitled to full no claims. Personally I prefer European insurance as the car is insured not the driver.
LHD is not a real problem and you get used to it after a short while, its just overtaking large vehicles thats a bit of a problem.
Apart from that its a really great car and if you were after one I'd say go for it. :car: With almost everything as standard you cant go wrong. Although I do hear that its now called a top sport and some features now come as options.
