In the summer, I used to start up the engine with no problems - in goes the key, start the engine.

Now in the winter I find it difficult to start the engine from cold- if I start immediatly without waiting for the lights to go off, the engine goes to 1200 RPM, then down to 1100, vibrates and sometimes stalls. On the second or third try if I wait for the lights to go off , then no problems, it starts just fine.

I have also found out that if the climate control was left ON and the compressor kicks in, the engine vibrates and sometimes stalls.
The situation is very much as if the engine does not have enough fuel, as if the fuel mixture is too lean in cold starts.

Needless to say that at the VAG service NOTHING came up with the computer and there were no error readings. All they could do is a restart or reload to the car computer.

I have looked into some threads in VWVORTEX.COM and found a recommendation to insert the key, wait 10 seconds for the lights to go off, give the sensors a chance to read the cold water temperature and then start the engine.

Here it is from VWVORTEX.COM - "When it's cold I heard it helps to turn the key to the first position (when all the dummy lights illuminate) and wait about 10 seconds before turning to the start position. This supposedly allows the sensors to adjust for the cold and it runs better."

I have found out that most of the time I can get a clean start up with that procedure but I stil have to keep the climate control on OFF.

Is that it? do I have to live with it, or is there another solution?
